Car broke down today....not good!
I have always said that this car knows exactly how much spare money I have. Lets just say the "clacking noise" got so bad I didn't think I was going to make it to the store. Found a motor for about $750 with low miles on it and the shop I had it towed to charges $650 to swap a motor....guess how much the go-cart I just sold for brought? I thought that was "unspoken for" money....but NOOOOOOOO!

Funny....I just had it changed about two weeks ago. Metal shavings on the dip stick....all five times it was checked when I made it in to work.

2002...I bought it used....it has over 160,000 miles on it....drivining like I do whatever I get ends up with unimaginable miles on it. It was making a clacking noise and I took it to a garage near the store. They said they couldn't find anything but told me that they normally don't work on these so they weren't familiar with them.
I will have to check on the warranty, but I don't think it is covered for anything any longer. I do think the oil pump was going out....but that is all from stories I have been told AFTER it broke down today. Oil light flickered every time I put the brakes on....had the oil changed and it stopped for a day....then started back. I took it back to the place that did the oil change for them to check it out and they said it oil pressure is fine and told me they didn't know what it could be....since they weren't a mechanic's shop and only did oil changes.

Automobile oil pumps, unless they are in a dry sump (and yours is not) are highly reliable since they have near constant lubrication during normal operation. Because of this and their rather simple mechanical design an out right failure is extremely rare. This is proven technology that has not changed much since Zipper Zap's first car with square wheels. All of those metal shavings you found on the dip stick and the "clacking" just screams bearing failure and if you get enough metal in the oil the pump can indeed fail.0 -
probably worn main bearings. if you drove it that long with metal in it , probly in your oil pump to. its all downhill from there. wished we were closer . jake and i have swapped motors and transmissions out in 6 hours. 625.00 seems a little high but i guess they have overhead to pay for

p.s. be sure to change oil on used motor and timing belt to before you put it in. will save you trouble later0 -
As Kris said - oil pumps are pretty simple devices and really aren't the root of the problem. General wear after that many miles, things get loose, the pump can't put out enough oil the keep metal things apart, and it sprials downhill from that. You are looking at about $3K for a Jasper rebuilt installed.
Be darn sure of the mileage of that used motor before you buy. Get some documentation. You may need the computer from the original truck - especially if it isn't your year.0 -

I wish you guys were closer as well. The thing about car problems and not knowing about cars is they can tell me whatever they want to and they know it. It helps to have things I need to know about....thank you for the timing belt info...usually when you start asking detailed questions they aren't as friendly. I just hope to squeeze a few more years out of it before I take on another vehicle.

Have someone check the timing before replacing the motor. The escape actually is a mazda motor and almost entirely a mazda. 0 -
Really....when I called around trying to find a replacement motor not many had one. I got prices from $1,200 to $950...finally had someone tell me $750 and I know someone who has bought a motor from them before....and they had no problems. I have no idea on what is best to do. I'm just trying to get out the cheapest right now with everything that is going on. 0 -
I just bought a motor from Rhino engines cheaper then jasper. Check ebay as well.

Seems like when you think you have a extra buck or two something always comes along to take it. I just replaced a down stairs heat pump and a kitchen appliance within 2 weeks apart.[B)] 0 -

Im up for it, cant be that hard.. If we can get the motor and trans out of a Ford Probe, and one out of a 96 Camaro (ill give it to you, we used a crane on that one..) we can do an SUV. Dropped the trans and replaced in the S-10 a good 3-4 times now.

Junk yards are not what they used to be most of them do not keep the engines and transmissions anymore. They sell them to rebuild places almost momentarily or atleast that was the case when i was looking for a motor. 0 -

Putting a new motor in a 2002 escape with 160k miles is like polishing a turd. I really have to ask why put $1400 into a complete POS? The motor is not the only thing in that car about to fail.

1500.00 for an engine swap is cheap.
I spent 6500.00 for a new engine to be installed in my wifes explorer last year.0 -

I agree. Ose the 1.5k for a downpayment on a new used vehicle with lees than 100k miles. Even with the Escape repaired, it's a $1500.oo trade in.0 -
