Car broke down today....not good!
I have always said that this car knows exactly how much spare money I have. Lets just say the "clacking noise" got so bad I didn't think I was going to make it to the store. Found a motor for about $750 with low miles on it and the shop I had it towed to charges $650 to swap a motor....guess how much the go-cart I just sold for brought? I thought that was "unspoken for" money....but NOOOOOOOO!

1993 Tempo. 167,000 miles. Every other damn thing has gone wrong with that car, BUT the engine. I could have welded the hood shut the day I got it in 97, but for having to change oil, top off fluids, and change plugs.
Yep, I like ford engines, just not the peripherals so much.0 -
i always change timing belt, water pump, and oil on any motor i buy used plus listen to it run or have a guaruntee. keep oil changed every 2500 miles, and add lucas oil additive or slick 50. make sure they change oil seals too or you will have a leaker. another trick is to put a couple of small magnets inside your oil pan, {through the drain hole} before putting drain plug back in. these will catch any metal shavings from wear before getting to your oil pump[;)] 0 -

lets see,,,1500 to fix a paid for auto..or 1500 down payment + 250 a month everymonth for 5 years to buy another auto,,that is if you do not wear out the new one before its paid for and have to trade it in on another new one,,,SORRY,,I will drive used cars all day long,,my last 3 came off of ebay,,last one 2000 windstar,100,000 miles,,,2 grand cash,,no monthley payments,,if it needs a new motor in a year so what,,1500 and drive it some more,,,,FIX IT AND DRIVE IT UNLESS YOU CAN PAY CASH FOR THE NEW ONE,, 0 -

This is about the cheapest way out that I can tell. I am just old enough to NEED the "comfort" cars....so there will be NO buying a cheap crappy thing just to drive around. It has to have AIR...great radio...not ride like a buggy...I have to be able to get into it without grabbing everything around me to pull myself out of it...and go at least 90 easily. After that I really don't care who made it...what color it is...or if the emblem on the hood is the symbol for "smells like fish" in Arabic.
For what I will have to spend on fixing this...I couldn't get anything else to drive (that fits my needs.) Plus, this car has new breaks on it....just spent almost $400 getting all of THAT done (which was just time to do and not broke down.)
I hate dealing with BIG car problems. The good thing about it is I will be driving my brother's car to and from work with a "for sale" sign on it. It has been for sale for some time....but just parked so nobody knew. Maybe I can help him sell it by driving it.0 -
1st year Ford Escape...sorry, but no surprise there...

LF, Sorry for your loss. 0 -
captplaid, i use valvoline, when you tear a motor down a valvoline motor is cleaner on the inside.
a pennzoil motor is always dirty and gunked up. just my experiance and i work on all my own. i'm a valvoline man
locust fork thats a good lookin vehicle, and no pyments. fix it and drive it. you know what it is. it'll go some more. iv'e had real good luck with used motors. try to get one from a wrecked car, you know it was running when they wrecked it.[:D][:D]0 -
