"Best" .45 pistol out there
I know a lot of folks swear by the 1911 and others swear by the H&K USP. I myself find the Sig P220 to be a fine gun with a beautiful trigger and better recoil than the 1911.
On the other hand, the 1911 is a classic and when you get your hands on a really good one, it's really good.
I have found the H&K USP to be okay, but quite a bit overpriced.
Overall, I'd have to settle on the Sig. It's a nice gun for a relatively nice price.
Thoughts, anyone?

Everything else after the Colt, the original, is an improvement in the manuf. eyes.
Look at the civilian and FED / State Government sales figures available for that model and that should tell you which is THE BEST .45 pistol out there.
Price, options, after sales service by manuf., accessories available for that particular model, all have a bearing on this question.

Also if I had bought a HK, I probally would have bought the others.

...no brainer for me [^] no finicky 1911's here, all 100% reliable. IF a Colt 1911 shows to be a little persnicity, nothing a little tender loving care wont cure. Except for Gold Cups, Special Combat...or anything out of the Colt Custom Shop...I always figure on a tune up, spring change, mag change, and a trigger job as part of owning a Colt, no bid deal to me and not that they all need those things.
...Just fun, and have not had one that is not all the better for it, face it, not many guns (cept high dollar customs) come w/a nice 3-4lb trigger and run smoother than ex-lax thru an Etheopian...[^] so a little "fun" work is just part of it for me.
There are a LOT of good looking/functioning semi .45's out there these days so it just about comes down to your prference and wallet.
I do like Kimber and Detonics though, come to think of it, not many guns I don't like...[;)]0 -

the more crap you put on a 1991a1, the worse it performs. keep it simple stupid (KISS) is what made them famous. dont re-invent the wheel. get a field grade 1911a1 and shoot the daylights out of it. 0 -

I like 1911's, but I am really partial to the Smith and Wesson
CS-45. Great carry gun. No problems at all out of mine, and it has been shot and shot and shot. Also like my CS-9.0 -

The above is why the 1911 has and always will be a flawed design. The amount of handfitting required to make it reliable and accurate is absurd. To say that a gun fresh off the assembly line should need three or four hundred dollars of work to function properly is to say that the design itself--or the manufacturer's methods--is wanting.
The 1911 can be a very effective handgun if a staggering amount of money and time is poured into each one. Wilson and the other high dollar shops make some beautiful guns, and they cost $2500 to $3500.
On a pure value for dollar basis, Glock or Sig does 95% of what a top of line 1911 can do, and does it for thousands less. Does a top shooter need a 1911? Probably so, but I doubt that there are many people even on this board whose shooting skills are so advanced that only a $3500 handgun can truly reveal them.
The 1911 is a design that only works in its most refined form, and one that is simply unworkable if economics are considered.
PS And don't even get me started on the fact that Colt sells guns its consumers know will need tuning to work properly. That says one hell of a lot about the company and the people buying its products.0 -

I chose to start with a RI 1911, but was strongly considering a sig 220 or witness (steel) in 45. The witness woulda been about $40 more than the RI, and I couldn'ta gotten the AK if I had gotten the SIG, and I really wanted a classic, so the 1911 won - but barely. 0 -

...Geez, with the contempt you show for the Colt you remind me of the people that think that Colt owners are snobs, and think all other guns are a POS. Most of those people Ive found are too cheap to spend the bucks on a Colt; so they spit venom about one of the greatest semi's of all time.

The only time my 1911 ever got troublesome was when I'd put a whole bunch of reloads through it (about 300 rounds I'm guessing). It started to misfeed about once every ten or so rounds, but that didn't happen until the last 3 or 4 magazines.
Still, that's a whole lot of dirty ammo going through a gun before getting hiccups. The only thing I don't like about 1911s is the price since the nicer ones cost a pretty penny and that's the only reason why the Sig won out in my opinion.0 -

All 5 of my Rocks have performed flawlessly right out of the box! All of those pictures above are just the way they came from the factory!
I do have one of the GI's out right now getting cosmetics done and getting nickled. But that was just because I wanted a fancy looking gun, not that it needed any work.
That is why I say RIA is the best bang for the buck! They WILL shoot all day long with all your high dollar souped up 1911's without haveing to do a single thing to them![:D]0 -
Is RIA really that good? If it is, I may have to go out and get one. I had a buddy of mine who swears his needed all kinds of bells and whistles before it worked the way he wanted it to.
Maybe he just had a bad model or his expectations were unrealistic?0 -

There have been people with minor problems with them (same types of problems I have seen with Colts, Springfields, Kimbers, and others) and Ivan (National rep for Armscor) has taken care of it VERY VERY quickly and normally throws in extras if a person did have a problem. ...Hey Kevin, you say your getting some nickle wk done...Im wanting the small parts on one of mine either chromed, or nickled...slide stop, mag release, beavertail, thumb safety...but not having any luck finding someone to do it.
Going to change the trigger out, so instead of just doing it myself I might just send it to a smith and let them change the trigger and do a trigger job...just so I can get them plate the small parts! Who you using?...[;)]0 -
Hey, read the comments. It's an accepted fact that 1911s are twitchy and require work. Yes, there's going to be the occasional gem that runs without a hitch right from the factory. Or you can buy a gun made the way they made them in WWII, loose enough that they'll always go bang but there goes your accuracy.
If, however, you want a reasonably accurate and reliable gun that's going to run correctly right out of the box, well, you're going to realize that a significant percentage of 1911s will not be able to do that.
On the other hand, you can buy a Glock that right out of the box will go bang every time. Ditto for a Sig.
If your ultimate goal is to protect yourself from bad people, the Glock and Sig make sense. If you like to fiddle around with guns, to take them back to dealer or to the Smith and become on a first name basis with the national customer service guy, well. . .0 -

A local smith here sent it out. I'm not sure who he is useing but I will find out for you. He showed me 2 other guns that these people did and they looked great.
