"Best" .45 pistol out there
I know a lot of folks swear by the 1911 and others swear by the H&K USP. I myself find the Sig P220 to be a fine gun with a beautiful trigger and better recoil than the 1911.
On the other hand, the 1911 is a classic and when you get your hands on a really good one, it's really good.
I have found the H&K USP to be okay, but quite a bit overpriced.
Overall, I'd have to settle on the Sig. It's a nice gun for a relatively nice price.
Thoughts, anyone?

MVP[:D][:D] "pimpin" reminded me of a thread I read on the 1911 forum awhile back. A guy was saying he was going to get his trigger jeweled...and a nube replied that he thought that it was crazy to put DIAMONDS on a trigger, and they would just fall off anyway...[:0][:D]...and he was serious, felt sorry for the poor guy...[;)] 0 -

I've owned/own .45's by H&K, Glock, Springfield Armory, Rock Island, Para-Ordinance, Auto Ordinance, Ruger and S&W.
With the exception of one batch of handloads and a single instance with Winclean ammo (I'll never buy that crap again), the HK's, Glocks, Ruger and S&W never, not once, so much as hiccuped when shooting.
The SA (Champion) had occasional problems, and was quite finicky when it came to hollow points (HydraShok, Silvertips good; Gold Dot bad). The Para (P14-45 Limited) would, occasionally, during a total solar eclipse and ONLY after sacrificing a fatted calf to the ghost of John Browning, go an entire magazine without choking. The Auto Ordinance would do just fine with hardball...but would lock up if I even put hollowpoints in my range bag that day.
The sole 1911 platform that has been trouble free (for me) are the Rock Islands; I've had a tactical for 2 weeks now, put 300 rounds of hardball through it to get acquainted and am now seeing which defense load it likes (right now, 230grn Golden Sabers have narrowly edged out Fed Hy-Shock).
Now: am I maligning 1911's? No, I'm not; I like them, I own them, I shoot them, and I enjoy them. However, based on my own, first hand experience with them, they do seem to be a lot more problematic than other .45 platforms. So, considering all that, would I choose one if I knew for a fact a had a serious "social encounter" in my immediate future? No, I would not. My choice would be either my H&K USP Tactical or my Glock 21. They ain't pretty, but they are uber-reliable, and I shoot quite well with them.0 -
Wow, I must be a real lucky guy because every Colt 1911 and 1991 I have owned functioned right out of the box without any work. The work I did have done on them was purely my own personal preference.
Back to the original question all the firearms you mentioned will serve you well. I would make the choice by what feels good in your hands....JMHO0 -

Here is a pic of my 280.00 1911 build
After a few magazines and clean/lube it has been shooting flawlessly and as accurate as my Colt, if not more.
I love this pistol, But it is heavier then I want to carry.0 -

First off, they are all good guns. Choose the one that fits you best.
My opinion:
Glock, good but don't like the feel.
HK, like holding a 2x4.
Sig. felt good but never shot one.
Ruger, reliable but bulky to me.
1911's, I like the way the feel and shoot. Some do need a little tuning to be 100% though. Of all the ones I sell, the GI Spring.'s and RIA tend to come back pretty quick for tuning, though in their defense, the owners should probably shoot more than 20rds. before giving up. 99% will wear into being reliable. However there are things you can do to either/any out of the box that will make them more reliable, more accurate, and run smoother. Also, I work on Colts, I don't work on Kimbers....sorry COLT[:D] (I missed the name change too). In fact I have a Kimber Ultra Carry II and a Colt Defender sitting right here and there is just no comparison. I think Colt might have some quality control issues, at least on the newer stuff. And I'm not a Colt basher, I'll take any thrown my way, just giving my observations.

I love my Defender and carry it. I just can't hit much with it. Not sure if its just me or the gun, but I do pretty well with my Sig. Most street shootings are at a very close range so I don't need to be that accurate with it in my opinion I can keep it on the body. 0 -

When I first started carrying, I was a cop and we had to carry 357 revolvers on duty but could carry anything we qualified with off duty. Back then, the 1911 was THE semi, I was told. So I bought a Colt brand new. That piece of crap would only feed FMJ. I had, and still have, some colt 1911 45s but just for the collectible factor. I do not trust any of them for CCW as not one of them will feed 100% of ANY ammo 100% of the time, which is what I require of a CCW gun. I have also had the same experience with friend's 1911s such as Kimbers. They are all picky and you have to find the HP ammo they will feed. Just don't see the attraction of having to hunt for a certain ammo that a certain gun will feed. Then one day long ago, I fired the Chief's Sig P220 and the skies parted and it was GOOD. That thing would feed anything, including empty cases. I have never looked back. I also like the XD a lot, they are great guns also. 0 -

The thread is about over so I might as well jump in and give you my 2 cents!
I have three kimbers, two of them being lightweight compacts, a colt gold cup series 70 and a Sig 245. All of them are great pistols and I have not had problems with them ever. I have a sight adj problem with one but thats the extent of my tinkering with any of them.
I had a Springfield lightwieght mfg in Brazil that I nor the factory could ever get to function correctly. Dumped it for a discounted price.0 -

figure on 100 bucks per letter to own a like model colt to any thing elseex....Springfield I bought new was $699 compareable colt was $1100
right now i have 3 .45's Glock model 30, HK USP, & a Wilson Combat SS Protector.....The Glock is a good shooter for its size and it is the one that I carry because of size and concealeability,the HK is an outstanding pistol...given the choice of a glock or HK the HK wins hands down...(VS a model 30 or model 21 (full size .45) Glock). IThink my Wilson is possibly the best stinkin gun of any caliber I have ever shot but since I paid what I paid for it ..it had damn well better be the best pistol I have shot[:D][:D][:D]0 -
