The family guns
I am thinking about selling off my dad and moms shotguns. We had a hunting camp in Mexico when I was a kid. Mom had a double barrel 16 GA. Savage.
Dad's is a Remington Sportman's 12GA.
I also have an antique Albert Greener double barrel, lots of engraving. It's very pretty, but it's been in my safe for over 20 years. Would the auction be the best place to list them? Or should I go to a gun shop?
I'll never use these guns anymore, I'll keep mine to use, but the others are just sitting here.

You will get more from them on Gunbroker. A gunshop will probably lowball you.
Why not keep them? You can pass them down to your grandchildren.0 -
They were your parent's, hang onto them. They're not hurting anything just sitting in the safe. Down the road you'll probably kick your self for getting rid of them. Hang onto the heirlooms. 0 -

My mom's double barrel is en elephant gun. I hunted with a 12 GA.as a kid, but I fired her gun once and it about took my arm off. I don't want it.
Really no sentimental value for me. The guns are not my parents. They are just guns. I'll only use my own guns if I ever decide to go to the range, not theirs.
They are just in the safe and not getting any younger. Memories are better than the guns anyway.
But I doubt they are worth much these days. I stopped by the local trap shooting range and was stunned by the new shotguns. VERY fancy.
These are just your regular beat up Mexico shotguns, used occasionally to dig a ditch if necessary.
I priced the Savage at $125.00 and the Remington at $200.00. I posted a flyer. The old Greener though, I wrote W.W. Greener Co. and he said he wants me to ship it over there to the UK. So I'm going to do that. There are collectors who like those guns over there.
Thanks for the input. I am a lady now in my 40's and my teenage daughter needs to go shooting. But I'll have her use my Ithaca when we go, I have 2 of them.

See, the key word you used is "pristine". Have you ever hunted in a Baja hunting camp? There is no pristine, trust me.
Guns are used, dropped, used as tools, door jams etc. But I guarantee they have hit hundreds of targets. My family didn't believe in keeping stuff pristine. They liked to use it and enjoys it. Sitting in the safe goes against their life long credo.0 -

The Greener is the gun to be careful in selling. It needs to be appraised first by someone into fine double shotguns before you ship it anywhere. The other two might be worth $5oo total.
These could be listed on Gunbroker.
A relative wanted some quick cash. Unbeknownst to his wife, he took over $2000 worth of her inherited guns to the local gun store and got $500 for them.0 -
You know...seeing my dad holding his shotgun, that's special. Just the gun alone is not.
My folks were not the sentimental types. I much more enjoy the memories of them using the guns for hunting, squashing a scorpion, picking up a dead rattler....wiping up the tequila spills off the barrels. They would be appalled by the idea of guns being in....safes! Gasp!
Guns are to be kept under the bed in the Airstream during hunting season, then smuggled back across the border until next year.
I'd rather think of some actually using them. There must be a scorpion somewhere to squash....0 -

Yes, I agree. That Greener was not a Mexico gun. Not sure where we got it. Mr. Greener said he can sell it at auction over there for 10% commission. I doubt he needs to cheat me for it. I do think it should be enjoyed by a collector. I'll maybe list these others on Gunbroker, because I don't see any advertising options for me around here, this being So. Cal. If I tried to run an ad for them the local paper would have a heart attack. Thanks for the advice.0 -

On another subject...anyone want a pontoon boat? 22ft/ w/trailer. It holds 6 fat old guys and all their crap with no problem. $2500.00.
It's also old, 1973 Valco. But it floats just fine.0 -

I train all breeds. I own and show 3 quarter horses, I am Western. But currently in training I have 1 Icelandic, Arabs, quarter horses and paints.0 -

I wish you well (even though I don't understand your feelings) on getting rid of your guns.
I still have my mothers gun and take it hunting at least once ever year . My daughter (about your age ) says she will continue after I am gone .
I hope your daughter does not sell your favorite saddle after you are gone.0 -

Guns are a tool to her and her parents, nothing more. The memories of bygone days are etched into the gray matter. As she has pointed out, she and her parents would rather see somebody make use of these guns than have them sit in a safe and rot.
