Suggestions for a bolt gun

Well, the gun bug has bit me again.....

Last time I ended up with my first wheelgun. Now I'm in the market for a good bolt-gun.

I'm looking for something that's more of a "do-everything" (or at least most things) gun.

I've heard really good things about Sako rifles and that will likely be what I purchase, I'm just trying to figure out a caliber.

    Nothing can handle that better than a 308.

    Hows about a Remington 700 VSSF in 308?

    Then again, Sako's are real nice!

    Second the 300 win. But I am a small guy and can't shoot that thing all day long. 40 rounds and I am done.[:D]

    Forget or lose your ammo? Odds have it that someone will have some 06 ammo in camp or at a camp nearby.
    A great assortment of bullet weights avail.

    30-06 as the .308 is a baby brother that is a wannabe. The 30-06 will handle any game in north america with the possible exception of the big bears.

    '06, not romantic but damn versatile. People I know who have a number of long guns, all have at least one '06. I recently bought a rifle for a friend who is a notch above poverty on the income scale. He wanted something he could hunt deer, elk,and black bear with. It had to be economical to shoot and reliable. Picked him up a model 700 Remington ADL with mounts and rings installed for $265. I through in a Bushnell 4x scope. Other than upgrading optics, what more does the guy need? Go with the '06, you can't go wrong.[:D]

    I also wasn't expecting so much support for the '06. I guess you can't go wrong with a classic [^]

    The largest game animal this rifle would be shooting is the occasional whitetail, assuming I get back into hunting in the future.

    I want a rifle that is suitable for anything from hunting to plinking to the zombie apocalpyse we all know is coming [:p]

    Just keep in mind that Carlos Hathcock made most of if not all of his 93 confirmed kills with a Winchester model 70 30/06

    and also the M 40A1 Marine Corps sniper rifle is a 308/7.62 nato Prolly cant go wrong with either[;)]

    A Savage with the Accutrigger chambered in 30-06 or 308.

    My Sako Finbear in .270 is a tack driver! Can't go wrong with a Sako in any caliber

    yep, but not all as he did have one confirmed with a .50

    Depends an where you live:
    Below the Mason/Dixon line,.308
    Between the Mason/Dixon line and the Canadian border, 30-06
    North of the Canadian line: .300 Win Mag

    (only slighly kidding)[;)]

    I've been doing a little research on the various rifle brands and I'm now a little less certain about the Sako. Everything I've read has said they are top-notch rifles, but it looks like it might be a budget buster for me.

    I've been reading up on Howa rifles. They seem to be well-liked on the forum and I can buy a ton of ammo with the money I save

    I'm with Catpealer. A nice Savage with an Accutrigger. I like mine blued with wood and a 22" medium weight barrel, and a Weaver 3-9x38 scope. Elegant simplicity.

    I've heard good things about Savage rifles.....also heard they are uglier than sin [;)]

    On the other hand, function does come before looks......some of the ugliest girls I've met have given the best............ah hell, nevermind [:p]

    I went for the Ruger model 77 in 257 Bob because the deer run small here . In your case I'd say Ruger in 30-06

    300 win Mag or 300WSM, both will beat a '06[xx(],

    I can shoot my 300 win all day but i don't know why i would.
