Its Not Hunting!
I just caught a program on the Outdoors channel. A group of friends bird hunting. They were out in a field, shooting away at birds. They had Mexicans sitting there loading their guns for them after each set of shots. Cases of fresh shells, and spent cases upon spent cases on the ground. They were literally shooting, reloading, and shooting again at the endless flocks of birds. They had no dogs, no retrievers, no nothing.
They killed all of these birds and just left them. The man said at the end of the show that they had killed more than a thousand birds on this "hunt". I'm sorry, this isn't hunting. I see no sport at all in it. All they did was kill animals just to kill them. They went back to camp and had a big steak dinner with all of them gathered at the table. Made me sick. They should be eating the birds they just killed, not steak.
I'm all for hunting game as long as it's put to good use. Killing animals just for the fun of it is ridiculous. Even if they didn't want them, someone would have liked to have those birds. Instead they just left them to waste.

I agree about killing animals just for fun.
With notable exceptions. Prairie Dogs, Pigeons, Jack Rabbits, Crows, sea gulls.

Well, nuisance animals are different. [:D]
I like to kill crows too!0 -
The peasants pick-up the birds.
Don't think for a sec. that the locals let them rot..0 -

-It doesn't matter if the locals pick up the birds. Just killing for fun is not something I can do anymore. I used to go out at night in New Mexico when I was a kid and shoot rabbits like that....fifty in a night. I just can't do that anymore.
Also, there are animals that I won't shoot if they aren't causing me any harm, even if they are designated as pests or vermin. I won't shoot coyotes and I could shoot a bunch of them right now.
Ground squirrels, however, are a different matter. Destructive little monsters.0 -
If you kill it, YOU eat it! (varmints et. al. excluded) 0 -
In the cordoba valley there are thought to be over 3 BILLION dove, they are a nuisance animal and are very destructive to the area crops. It is no different than shooting up a dog town or putting out a bug bomb. If you want to shoot ALOT, this would be a great trip for you to take. A buddy of mine just got back and they gave all the of the dove to the local homeless shelter, they must be sick of eating dove because they shure shoot alot of it down there. 0 -
As long as the game that is harvested is eaten and/or used for something I haven't a problem with it. Wasting it is disrepectful in so many ways. Not sure how many other areas do it, but I know that a lot of local food pantries will gladly take donated game(especially venison) and I think that this is a great idea.

It's shooting, not hunting. And it's not something that should be televised or bragged about. 0 -
Icould shoot crows all day long and not feel bad, cant believe theres a season on em here in Georgia! Thanks,Paul 0 -
...If it is the show Ive seen, the locals get the birds, they do not go to waste.
...Except for pests, I eat what I kill.
...Would I go to Mexico or Argentina and shoot a case of shells a day, at Doves??..YOU BET! You still have to hit the bird for it to fold.
...The limit here for Doves changes from season to season depending on the amount of birds; sometimes it's as little as 12 birds a day, then your possession limit. Would I go somewhere to get as many shots in a few days as I would in the US for a decade?? YOU BET I WOULD!
...A BIG part of hunting is FUN, who hell would go thru some of what hunters go thru just for the "meat"???
...How many people here that actually hunt, say "oh hell, it's time to go hunting on opening day, geez, Ive dreaded this day for a year"??? Sometime stop and add up every penny you have invested in hunting, then figure what the "meat" you have cost per pound; then say it was/is not some of the most exspensive meat you have ever "bought". This ain't the 1800's, almost anyone can go an pick up fine meat CHEAPER than hunting...the BASIC reason to hunt, is for FUN; if it was a miserable time, EVERY hunt, no one would make the choice to go.
...As long as the game has/is given it's fair chance, it's legal, and not a canned hunt; I will enjoy it and not try to "rationalize" if a QUANITY of game is better/worse than hunting for days without seeing anything; or pondering rather or not a BIG part of hunting is "fun", if it wasn't "fun" who the hell would go...[;)]

There's a lot of that "not hunting" on T.V. 0 -

I agree! I want to go deer hunting even though I don't like deer. I'll give the meat to someone in the family or if they don't want it I'll donate the meat. Last year in MO I think over 250,000 pounds of venison was donated.0 -

Just hope you never have to kill a skunk that's decided to lodge in your garage, shop, or under your house.
You may change your tune.
Or not. Enjoy your meal.0 -
Well, that is how I feel about deer baiting, running deer with dogs, and four-wheelers in the woods.
Ain't hunting.....0 -
I would love to go on one of those Dove shoots. When and where? [8D][8D] 0 -
Selectfire got it right, it's not hunting; it's SHOOTING.
Wolf, the bunnies are glad yer gone! The coyotes are voting right now.
If hunting=fun, what's the matter with hunting morons on 4-wheelers for the "sport"?0 -
I just am not crazy about shooting 1000 of anything in a day...I shoot a case at dove on opening day here and am whooped. 0 -

Lets see........
1. They have a shotgun
2. They aim it at birds flying by.
3. They shoot 10 birds.
4. They pick up and eat only 5 birds of the 10 birds.
Does that mean they "were" hunting when they shot the 5 they picked up and "were not" hunting when they shot the other 5.
Nonsense..... they were hunting the entire time.0 -

I think you missed the point.
They KILLED a THOUSAND birds. I don't know about you, but I know good and damn well I couldn't eat a thousand birds. 10 birds is within reason.0 -
It is nice to know these birds do get picked up by locals. I had no idea where it was. Knowing it was in Mexico now it makes more sense. 0 -
Hey Wolf, GO AHEAD and shoot the damn coyotes. You'll feel better. 0
