Truck Gun: Rifle, Shotgun or Handgun?
Just wanted some thoughts on preferred "truck guns"

Personally, I'd lean towards a handgun, specifically a CCW weapon. I'm leary of leaving any gun in a vehicle unless I absolutely have to, on school property for example.
I know some like to have a shotgun or carbine handy and I'm curious as to why

my dad had a 30-30 in his truck for the logest time. dad sold the truck, called the guy back the next day so that he could get his gun out.0 -
i carry the sig 40 on my side and a ar15 with a collapsible stock under the back seat can get to it a flash if needed 0 -
Always used to carry a sawedoff 12ga., but anymore I'm content with

Don't worry, I'm not going to give you the old "you don't NEEEEED that" line that I get from limp-wristed libs.
Just as an example, I can slide a 32rd stick mag into my Glock 19 if for whatever reason I need the extra firepower. Honestly, the weight it adds to the back of the gun makes rapid fire a breeze.
When I get to wherever I'm going, I can tuck the Glock into a holster or whatever and go on my way. I have the weapon in my control at all times.
As I said before, I'm leary of leaving any gun inside a vehicle. No way I'd leave an expensive one like an AR laying around. If I was going to leave one unattended, a small handgun would be a hell of lot easier to hide than even the shortest rifle0 -
I've got an 8" Ka-Bar under my seat. It's not exactly legal in Wisconsin to have a loaded firearm in your vehicle. 0 -
The old 30-30 is a good truck gun.
Not NEARLY as offensive to bubba cop, when he pulls you over, that a pistol is. Got a CCW ? Then the biggest pistol you can handle..with the most rounds.
I can envision one scnerio where the lever 30-30 will shine. That being..coming to the aid of an officer in trouble. Stopping outside the effective range of the perp, one could handle the situation, were help needed. Given the increasing police shootings across the country, I think thugs will elect to shoot first, as time goes on.0 -
You could hide a Kel-Tec SU-16 under the seat pretty easy![:p] Just fold that puppy darn near in half and it's roughly two feet long.
But seriously, I would imagine a handgun would be the most practical - it's not like you an whip a shotgun or a rifle out if a carjacking occurs and zombies die just as well against pistols as they do long guns.[:p][:D]0 -

In my truck I have a Mini-14, as well as the .40 and .32 that I carry.

Rednecks ALWAYS carry shotguns in the back of their pickup trucks... It has been a long standing tradition for almost a century now. That's your answer.
Honestly, I'm not so sure the type of gun you intend to store is going to be dependant on the type vehicle. You can fold a Kel Tec sub 2000 in half... this makes it about 14 inches long. I think this would fit just as easily in a sedan, SUV, or minivan, as it would a truck.
I'd suggest a full size handgun. Walther P99 AS in .40 would be good.0 -
A good truck gun is a nice cheap Mosin Nagant M38 or M44. The gun can get banged around behind the seat for years and not get damaged. Costs less than $100, so if it got stolen, no big deal. 0 -

The only thing some can legally leave there... in Texas you can't have a pistol in the car inless your traveling or are one of the CHL traitors...0 -

Here in Massachusetts we have had the right to have a "truck gun" removed from our personal liberties by the mad dog liberal extremist socialist meanies that partake in our state government. The have made it a felony to leave any gun in any vehicle, loaded or unloaded, unattended. Firearms can only be in the vehicle with you to transport and then it (any long gun) must be disabled by either a trigger lock or bolt removal or some other "accepted" way of disabling the firearm. And under no circumstances is it legal to have a loaded gun (long gun) in a traveling vehicle. In fact we can even be cited if we lean a loaded gun (long gun) on our vehicles.
The only way we can have a loaded gun in a vehicle is if it is on our person as in a carry weapon as long as you have a carry permit concealed or otherwise. But the catch is if your carry weapon causes fear in another person you can be convicted of a felony and become disqualified from your rights to keep & bear arms!
This is a lesson all of you out there need to learn and be vigilant not to let it happen and not to let your states take these same steps down that slippery slope!
As to answer the question, I would imagine it depends on the location and demographic. I am sure farmers out in the Midwest and the South that spend alot of time moving around from their fields and land areas like to carry a .223 rifle in their trucks for pesky varmints and predators. Here in the Northeast, I used to like to keep my .45 ACP (cocked & locked) in my truck as a personal defense fall back piece. With the draconian Anti laws and the addition of children to my family I no longer leave it in the truck or cocked & locked unless it is locked up in my gun "closet" where it frankly doesn't do me much good...
Not to mention the fact that it is also now illegal and makes you guilty of a felony to leave any firearm unlocked and unsecured by a trigger lock or other such "accepted" securing (IE item that makes your firearms useless and inaccessible for use to the legal law abiding owners) device. Only when cleaning or preparing for use are your firearms allowed to be unlocked in your home here in The Peoples Republic of Massachusetts. It is legal to take our your guns and show them to your friends etc., but they have to be under your direct control and supervision to be out of an "accepted" locking gun cabinet. Glass fronted beautifully crafted gun display cabinets are no longer permitted and are now illegal to keep your firearms in because the state legislature has, in their infinite wisdom, deemed it an invitation to have the glass smashed out and your firearms stolen, which is of course a felony, that now makes you a felon by being an accessory to the felony of your guns being stolen by you tempting the robbers or burglars by letting them see your fine firearms thru the glass before the steal them...

Ballester-Molina plus two extra mags.
Why?
Because I don't have a Marlin 336 yet. And because I live in town, I have to take my gun out of my truck every night when I go in the house. The Ballester is just easier to carry.0 -
I think it depends on where you are going to be driving most.
When I'm visiting family in rural Arkansas, I will susually have a Mosin Nagant carbine in the trunk.
Most of the time when I'm in Kansas City, I have a Mossberg 500 in the trunk.
This is of course, in addition to the PT1911 that I carry.0 -

Handgun.
I like a stainless 38 caliber snubnose revolver for this.
Simple, rustproof, reliable, fits in the glove box (which I can lock when not in the car), and if necessary can be slipped into my pocket (eg if I need to stop for gas at some remote place late at night). I suppose I could also fire it one handed while driving with the other, though I really cant imagine ever needing to do that.
Handling and firing a long arm from inside your car is at best awkward. It might make sense to have a gun in your car for "general" purposes, but if you need to run back to your car to get it for self defense, its probably too late.0 -
I'll vote for both a handgun and a 30-30. The long gun behind the seat is useless for self defense while you're in the vehicle, and the handgun isn't of much value for getting rid of stray dogs chasing the calves. 0 -

I'd go with a low end 22 handgun for "small" tasks, and a old milsurp rifle for other tasks. SKS, old Mosin Nagant, old mauser, enfield, etc. 0 -
