    Two things here:

    1. As a landlord, NO WAY do I want to have to "verify" someone's "citizenship". I have enough expenses and other stuff to deal with as it is. 99% of illegals wouldn't pass my screening ANY WAY......moot point. How would I "screen" them anyway? Drivers license? ID Cards? Jobs? What? I know illegals who speak perfect english and have been in this country for 30 years.......you can't tell them apart from the "citizens" who were born here.

    2. The majority of "illegals" that I know don't even know who these "atzlan" people are......nor would they care.

These tiny minority groups remind me of NAMBLA, which has about 50 members. They say ANYTHING, and the press is all over them like they speak for the entire minority population. NAMBLA issues a press relase, and it gets in the papers worldwide......what other group of 50 people has that power? The media SUCKS!

Merc (who currently has ZERO hispanics as tenants......it has just worked out that way.....(for now)

A Social Security card should take care of that. If they have one, you could reasonably plead ignorance of their status.

Unfortunately, they are still breaking the law, still driving down wages, and still affecting the quality of life, schooling, and property values throughout the United States. It's hard to put our compassion aside, but my tolerance has run out. When you see a crowd of Mexicans numbering in the tens of thousands demanding special treatment and waving Mexican flags, you will find it very hard to NOT say, "F*** you, get outta my country."

I've got no problem with legal immigrants.

Nor do I have a problem with people who are trying to fit in, but there comes a point where you cannot stop out of fear you may upset or hurt the wrong people. There were plenty of good Germans in World War II - it didn't stop us from bombing the hell out of them.

And while I most assuredly do not propose murdering or killing any illegal aliens, the time has come to handle this situation once and for all. Why is it that Americans should pay taxes to support illegal immigrants? The American worker's purchasing power and real wages have been decreasing ever since the 1970's to the point where a two (sometimes even three) income household is a necessity. A flood of workers who will work for even less not only exascerbates the situation, it overloads and bankrupts our schools, our hospitals, and our social welfare net.

Teachers are now required to know Spanish rather than the students being required to know English. Cops have to learn the Miranda act in Spanish lest some illegal claim he was not read his rights.

Once upon a time immigrants came and wanted to become American. One of my neighbors who was originally from Spain, refuses to sell his barely-functioning Chrysler because he said, and I quote, "I'm an American now, so I want to keep my American car."

But now? They come here, demand we speak Spanish, demand "their" rights, and demand clemency for breaking our laws? I can think of a few things wrong there.

And worse yet, illegals besmirch the good name of the legal immigrants who are here. It is getting to the point where Americans are being lumped in with these law-breakers merely by their looks. And it's not a totally illogical response to have when illegals outnumber their American brethren ten to one.

Simply put, it has to stop.

Its easy to screen them away if you do a serious credit check. First of all they won't have a stable credit file on record. Second they won't have proper references for former residences that they had in this country. They will try to use all their buddies as references and if you check thoughly you can figure that out. Then you check employment, that won't look very stable either.

Help me out what was the from number? INS-##???

There was three lists. One from List "A" or One from each List "B" and List "C". Drivers License and Social Security Card were on List B and C. Back when Reagan had the immigration Reform, it was a good law. But in the Mid '90's the cowards in Warshington gave up the will to enforce the laws on the books.

Enforce the laws on the books! Why the heck does Warshington make laws if they don't enforce them?

Typical statement of all the landlords in Farmers Branch who are willing to put money (rental of their property) over the law or civil responsibility of following the law (which it now is in Farmers Branch) or patriotism to their flag. I'm sorry you fell in with them. it's disappointing.

They have instructions of who to contact and how to confirm immigration status. It's now the law, and if they don't want the hassle, they need to sell the property and by where this is not a requirement.

I expect, now that it has passed, to see many more suburbs in Dallas/Ft. Worth to do the same. No property owner should put money (theirs) above the law.[;)]

Funny how this issue goes right down the line in Farmers Branch. The legal citizen property owners are for it almost 100%. The investment property owners and illegal renters are against it almost 100%. The only others are Hispanic citizens who either own or rent, but try to make a sanctuary for illegals because they are either family or they know they will patronize there local businesses as Spanish speaking customers.

What about Vietnamese? This is confusing... A good friend of mine here in SC has the last name Nguyen. Hai Nguyen. 44 % of Vietnamese have this last name.. wow..

    Vietnamese Names

Vietnamese personal names are usually composed of three elements appearing in the following order: first, the family or clan name (ho), such as Nguyen, Tran, Le, etc.;second, the middle name(chu dem or chu lot). 'cushion world,' such as Van, Dinh, Huu, etc,; and third, the personal or given name (ten). Example: Nguyen Van Nam, in which Nguyen, the family name, i.e. the appellation of the remote clan ancestor - a god or a hero - is transmitted from generation through male offspring. Van is the middle or "cushion" name. Nam, the given name, always placed last, corresponds to the first or Christian name in Western societies.

Sometimes there is no middle or cushion elements: Ly Cam, Ly Tien, Le Loi, Nguyen Trai, etc. This is true only of men's names, and represent 22% of a corpus of 3,282 names (Pham Tat Thang 1988, 185).

    Family Names

There are, according to tradition, one hundred surnames or family names in all: tram ho, cf. Chinese bai sying. The real number is, however, unknown although it has been said that the maximum is there hundred(Huard, Durand 1954, 92). In the Red River delta of North Vietnam, Gourou (1936, 127) counted no more than 202 different family names.

The most frequently encountered family names are single word such as Nguyen, Tran, Le, Vu, Vo, Hoang, Huynh, Pham, Ngo, Truong, Phan, Doan, Thai, Trinh, Dang, Bui, Lam, Cao, Duong, Dinh, Do, Luu, Ly, etc.

A study conducted in the province of Bac-ninh in North Vietnam revealed 99 different family names, with forty-four percent of the families bearing the name Nguyen (Gourou 1936, 124). According to the French geographer, several villages in the Tonkin delta house only individuals bearing the same clan name (1936, 124)

The majority of family names can be traced to Chinese clans, and indeed "can be written in Chinese charaters (Nguyen Khac Kham 1973, 196). But there are also family names that came from Cham people (Ong, Ma, Tra, Che, Lang, Sam) in the south (Nguyen Bat-Tuy 1954, 50)

Other family names may have two words, which are hyphenated in the conventional orthography (Nguyen-Tan, Nguyen-Khoa, Ho-Dac, etc.). In such compounds the first word indicates the family which has adopted the individual, whereas the second word denotes the family of origin: thus the double family name Vu-Pham means that the person, of the Pham clan, was later adopted by the Vu clan. Another explanation for compound family names is that the second element, originally a middle name, came to be used jointly with the family name to identify members of one family among so many Nguyen's or Tran's, after the clan got broken up because of urbanization and displacement. Thus, we have such family names as Tran-Dinh, Tran-Thanh, Tran-Nhu, Ngo-Dinh, Nguyen-Dinh, Nguyen-Khoa, etc. The two examples (Uat-tri, Gia-cat) given in Huard, Durand (1954, 92) are Chinese, not Vietnamese names. Male members of the royal family who are not in direct line with the ruling Nguyen family take the name Ton-that 'Revered Family'. The women have the name Ton-nu.

    Middle Names

The middle element, when there is one, nearly always tells you about the individual's sex, since girls' names - 100% before 1945 and 87% after 1945 - have Thi ( < Chinese shi) (Pham 1988, 187). Middle names for men are usually Van, Huu, Duc, Dinh, Xuan, Ngoc, Quang, Cong. The middle name may remain the same for all male members of one family. Only one set of three middle elements indicates the relative ages of the siblings. Brothers with manh, trong, qui as middle names are respectively the first, the second and the third in the family, all the following ones taking gia. An older brother may be identified with ba, and his younger brother with thuc.

As a rule the middle names does not indicate generation. Some families may, however, set up arbitrary rules about giving a different middle name to each generation. The case of the last royal family, founded by Nguyen (-Phuc) Anh in 1802, is an often quote example. Emperor Gia-Long's fourth son, upon ascending the throne in 1820 under the dynastic tittle of Minh-Mang, established a list of middle names to be given to his descendants successively (Laborde 1920, 388-389). These names were arranged in four lines of verse with five word each:

    Mien Huong Ung Buu Vinh

    Bao Dinh Qui Long Tuong

    Hien Nang Kham Ke The

    To Quoc Bao Gia Xuong

Minh-Mang's son, Thieu-Tri (1841-47), and his collaterals had Mien. In fact, Thieu-Tri's full name was Nguyen(-Phuc) Mien-Thi. Nguyen(-Phuc) Huong-Nham was the name of Thieu-Tri's descendant (Tu-Duc), who reigned from 1847 to 1883. In the next generation, Ham-Nghi, as well as Duc-Duc, Hiep-Hoa, Kien-Phuc had the name Nguyen(-Phuc) Ung- ...The former Chief-of-State Bao-Dai is the seventh descending generation, so his name is Nguyen(-Phuc) Bao-Long. Overseas, members of the former royal family have dropped the family name Nguyen(-Phuc), thus making it difficult to identify one individual and his uncles (or nephews): people have to refer to the above quatrain to realize that Buu Hoan, for instance, calls Ung Trinh his uncle, and Vinh Dan his newphew. Another example is the Le family, with the generation makers Cam, Hong, Phuoc (Huard, Durand 1954, 93).

Social Security Cards don't mean @#$!. I had a girl I wanted to recruit. She was 19, graduated top of her class and wanted to be a soldier. She was born in Germany to a German mother and an Iranian father. After a great deal of investigation into the situation I found that she had a Social Security Card but had been here in the USA since she was 12 years old on a tourist visa. Intelligent, hard working, attractive and ambitious. I should have married her.

    Dheffley,
You are missing the point about what I said: There is NO EASY WAY to determine WHO is illegal/legal. If they just came into this country, and have no id/SS card/etc, sure. If they've been here 30 years, no.

A HUGE number of illegals have fake papers anyway. Fake SS Numbers, fake ID cards, etc. They aren't "faked" in that someone is printing them off, but they are not THEIR numbers. They have real ID cards, SS cards, etc, issued by the government, with someone elses info on them, and their name.

How do you think these huge businesses hire all these illegals? With no id or anything? No. They have faked papers.

An NO, I don't "believe everything the media and the democrats tell me".

OBVIOUSLY you weren't paying attention to what I've been saying........not even a BIT.

I deal with illegals all the time........I KNOW them, I KNOW about them, I LIVE IN TUCSON!

Of all of the people on this board, I probably know more illegals than anyone else. I own land 11 miles north of the Mexican border!

Tucson is something like 60% hispanic (no idea how many are here legally.)

sig232- A credit check does NOT mean anything these days. Why do you think Bank of America is loaning money to illegals? SOME have good credit. SOME have good job histories. SOME have good references.

Obviously some of you don't deal with illegals much, because many of you are HIGHLY uneducated about what they REALLY do.

Some of you guys are missing the entire point here........I have NO IDEA how to tell if someone is "illegal" or not. If they speak zero english, have no job, no papers, no references, etc, then sure, it'd be easy to tell they are illegal.

If they've been in the USA for 10 years, or whatever, speak perfect english, have a SS Card, have good credit, etc.......then they'd be like 50% of Tucson. How do you tell if that person is legal or not?

    I wanna know.

    Merc,

The city gives the landlords the method of checking legality, and they are required to do it. Plane and simple. What they want is to ignore the law, rent to anyone who pays, put the money in their pocket and not be responsible. Money first.

They also know they are renting to illegals for the most part and want to continue to do so so they don't have vacant properties. They don't give a crap about the law or who they rent to, and would rent to Ossama as long as he paid in cash.

The part I'm paying attention to is your support for them to continue doing business the way they are, and that says a lot about you. How can you support that? Is it okay for the INS to continue to take no action on deportation of illegals? Is it okay for sanctuary cities to release criminals because they are illegal and they don't want to call ICE? Just where do you come down on the side of America and the law?

That's a whole other argument that I think we will agree on. The argument today is, landlords following the law and deportation of illegals. After that is done, we'll cross the other bridge.[;)]

That is a good arguement but not valid when I rent to tenants. But the favorable " do not take the law into your own hands applies". I am not an INS agent who is paid. Or a Police Officer who is paid. I am a Landlord. Now before everyone gets their bowels in an uproar the town councel should check their own political background people in their own town to see IF they have Mexicans cleaning their homes, mowing their yards, or working in the local factories. I am not responsible as a Landlord who I rent to UNLESS I discriminate based on Race, Age, Religion. That would be a Federal law. Their local ordinances will fall short in court, especially when they start fining the Landlords. Maybe I need to fly down there and buy some rental property and challenge these locals. To put the responsiblity on Landlords is rediculous. Where is the local Police to search and destroy all these Mexicans?

"Maybe I need to fly down there and buy some rental property and challenge these locals. To put the responsiblity on Landlords is ridiculous".

I'd like to see that happen. There should be some good buys on rental property now as some owners don't want the hassle of dealing with the new law.

You will find that your normal way of doing business as a landlord won't fly in Farmers Branch, Texas. The majority of the citizens there voted the law in and will stand up with law enforcement as a posse to make sure the law is enforced.

No, you, as a landlord, are required to follow all laws in renting your property, period. You don't get to pick and choose the ones you want to follow and the ones you want to pawn off on someone else. Either follow the law or go to jail.

I don't like the law that tells me I have to wear a seatbelt, but I can't ignore it just because I disagree with it. All landlords want their properties occupied and money coming in. Everyone else in the world wants the landlords to follow the laws. What gives you the right to pick and choose?

quote: I am not an INS agent who is paid. Or a Police Officer who is paid. I am a Landlord. Well, I'm not an ATF agent who is paid, so I can ignore any idiotic local gun laws I feel like?

I can sympathize with the fact that perhaps the law's unintended consequence is more hardships placed upon the shoulders of landlords and rental property owners, but no one said that dealing with the illegal alien problem would be easy.

There's a multitude of excuses that can be employed that justify a "not my problem" sort of attitude, but such justification falls short of being a legitimate reason for NOT pursuing an anti-illegals course of action.

Right now the inadequacies of enforcing the law affect you while the price of not tackling this illegal immigration problem affect us all.

I can understand your position and even sympathize. Were I renting out property, I would probably sympathize a great deal more. But barring a comprehensive and constructive federal solution to illegal immigration, it falls upon local municipalities to get the job done.

And as far as it not standing up in court, let's put it this way: if states and cities can regulate firearms, states and cities can regulate immigration. The Lefties can't have it both ways on this one.

    select-fire,

It is not discriminatory to further regulate an industry. A law controlling the price of gasoline, for example, is not discriminatory because it does not regulate the price of TV sets. Just as alcohol, firearms, and tobacco cannot be sold to minors or cars to people without insurance, a municipality is now saying you cannot rent to people who cannot prove citizenship.

In addition, it can be construed as further defining what is considered aiding and abetting. Selling an illegal a hammer or a burger cannot and likely would not be considered an act of aiding and abetting unless the store owner knowingly sold an illegal a hammer knowing that illegal was going to use it to beat someone's brains out.
However, renting to an illegal alien gives them sanctuary and aid, above and beyond what a burger does.

Challenging this law based upon notions of discrimination will likely only succeed if there is unequal enforcement of the law. Otherwise I see very little sympathy for your side in court.
