I would have it tied up in court so long I could retire.. This is a Federal matter not some yahoo local matter. The town is going to be broke losing a lawsuit... see it isn't about whether or not the Landlords are responsible for checking tenants. Why not just set up a citizens patrol outside the town and check all cars coming into town? Taking the law into your own hands can get yourself in real hot oil...
You all dissapoint me.. to allow a local little town to pass a ludicious law. Now who is going to enforce it? I don't speak Spanish to interpret..and rent to people. All I know is when a Landlord gets fined the SHTF. BTW IF the tenants are illegals don't you think they will boogie out of the rental If someone from the Government comes to check papers.( And the Government is the ONLY people who can actually remove the tenants )0 -

Bolony.. aiding a abetting would be construed if the Landlord Knew they were Illegals. I don't speak Spanish. I have been tricked by WHITE tenants before and lied to... BTW I would like to see the local hospital turn down the party if they showed up to have a baby. That would make the 6:00 National news.... Heck , they draw Social security and are reckognized for benefits. Take it up with the Federal gov. if you have a complaint.0 -
It isn't about Mexicans. It isn't about hammers, or hamburgers. It is about property owners and ILLEGAL immigrants.
Farmers Branch isn't about to be intimidated or bankrupted by lawsuits from crybabies, either. They are insured, with a $50,000 deductible. $50G is nothing to FB.
No one is being asked to discriminate. It's real simple. Anyone, no matter what color, or what language they speak, when applying for a rental, shows the landlord proof of their right to be here, same as they are SUPPOSED to do when they apply for a job. (I-9) I haven't read the ordinance, but I suspect a Driver's License and a Social Security card should be sufficient.
Farmers Branch is a small city, about 26,000 people, and totally landlocked by other cities, with no room to expand. It is a fairly affluent city, generally, and the council apparently wants the city to stay affluent, and keep their property values from being degraded by an influx of CRIMINALS.
Asking landlords not to aid and abet CRIMINALS is not unreasonable.
Say, when an apartment property is identified as a nuisance, on account of drug dealing, prostitution, and other criminal activity, and the owner won't or can't clean it up, and the city files the proper paperwork in court, and then a D-9 Cat pushes the place down, depriving the owner of his livelihood, and the crooks of a place to operate, is that an unreasonable imposition on anyone? I don't see the difference, except in one case you are dealing reactively, and in the other, proactively.0 -

First of all, I bet there are cases where Mexicans have forged documents..
No Landlord in their right mind would harbor a fugitive.
When a Landlord is aware of a problem such as prositution, drug dealings it is up to the Landlord to cure the problem. ( or they could lose their property ). There are documented cases where Landlords have been in Drug dealings with the tenants taking profits. Uncle Sam cures it quickly.
The issue is Proving the Landlord was willfull in obtaining the tenants. I wouldn't know a legal drivers license or SS card from a forged one.0 -
We have a motel/apartment outfit here that is just about to meet with the wrecking crew. Some landlords just don't listen, and the almighty dollar means more to them than anything else. They should think of the dollars they threw away on what is now a pile of rubble, rather than the dollars they collected from criminals.
Everyone knows that forged documents exist, and no one asked anyone to be able to tell the difference. If you have a photocopy of an apparently-valid DL and SS card in the tenant's file, that is demonstration of a good faith effort to comply, IMNSHO. Maybe use a background search service like TenantTracker or PublicData. Or maybe not, since those services cost money and cut into the almighty profit.0 -
I have found out thru the years when I speak about prosecuting tenants for illegal activity such as drug dealing, they all of a sudden do not want to rent off of me. All I have to do is mention I turned in taped surveilance to the Sheriff's dept. and my problems do not exist. Maybe some of the Farmers Branch Landlords could do the same. If a Landlord is the least but suspicious of a Tenant it is best to send them up the road before renting to them. Say like wearing a coat in the middle of the summer cause they are cold. Out of curiosity, do the city police (or state patrol, or county sherrifs) check for citizenship when they "meet" someone on the job? Nunn? When you issue a speeding ticket (or accident report or whatever), do you check citizenship?

A lot of the problem is a legal rents house or appt. then the slumlord lets 27 other ilegals move in at $100.00 a month that is a big prob. here in Ft. Worth and i'm sure in Farmers Branch. The landlord never says all you others have to move because as long as he
can stack the ilegals in for $100.00 each he will. Seems like all the other people that came to AMERICA because they wanted to better them selves, learn to speak english and learned to fit in, these mexicans
want AMERICA to change to fit them, i see it every day, some of them get mad at their friends at work for speaking english.0
