longest shot you ever took on a deer
just wondering what the longest shot any of you took at a deer. i'm not proud on doing it and i know that i shouldn't have done it but i had a couple of friends egging me on to try at a deer at 800 yards with the 7mm mag. now i new i could hit at that range because i have made that shot before with out a problem but i still dont feel right about doing it. anyway i took a shot and dropped a 5x6 deer at 835 yards. so i was just wondering what others have taken deer at. i should add the reason there were egging me on to shoot a deer at that range was because of the Sheppard scope that was on this gun the one with the built in ranging circles. they didnt believe that they accually worked. well they do.

I was thinking more of whats beyond. But if you can tell I guess it's safe. 0 -
Farthest deer was 45 yards with a 300 win mag, but I've only killed a couple of deer. Farthest elk was at 176 with the same 300 win mag, I've taken 9 elk.
I practice at 500 yards and say a prayer every year that I don't have to take that shot.0 -
Since I did most of my deer hunting in Pa., I will tell you the honest truth. About 140 yds. I am sure somebody shot one at a mile or possibly two but not me. In the dense forest areas and hills of western Pa. 140 yds is a long long shot. 0 -
113 yards....Remington 870 12 Ga. 2 3/4" Federal Sabot slugs
9 pt. Buck.0 -
308 yds Remington 700 ltr in yes, .308 small doe feeding on acorns at the edge of a hay field with a LARGE oak tree behind her 0 -
Furthest deer for me is right at 350 yards with a .308.
835 yards. Good shooting.0 -
For me probly about 150 yards!
That is one reason that I feel my 30-30 is more than sufficiant for hunting. Most shots are between 75 to 125 yards and the 30-30 is great at those distances.0 -
Mabee 60 yrds tops!Thanks,Paul 0 -
My longest was 160 yards paced off. I have a buddy who sets up his blind for a 440! 0 -
I'm not saying.....It would only open me up for ridicule and scorn. Besides, it took me three days of hiking and camping out to get to my kill......and no one would believe me. [:)][:)]

I wouldn't call BS on an 835 yard shot at a deer; however, I have shot a Barrett 50 cal. with a Swartzy(sp) scope 800 measured yards at a human silouette target. I couldn't even begin to imagine trying this with a 7MM mag. Here are pics from the back of the Barrett sitting 800 yards from our target so you can get an idea of what we are talking about. The target frame is about 5' high.

I'll take a nice HB 7mm over a .50 BMG for accuracy all day long.0 -
Just over 1000 yards with a 25-06. 0 -
500 yds with a 270 0 -
I have shot several at 350 to 450 yards. 0 -
About 25 yards with a Hoyt bow. Shortest, about 10 yards with the same bow. [:D] 0 -

Why don't they issue 7MMs to the military snipers for long-range shooting. It's because the 50 cal. shoots a much heavyier bullet that isn't affected by the wind nearly as much. Kills by a trained sniper are routinely made at 1500+ yards. I doubt very seriously that a 7MM would be consistant at that range. BTW, I have used a 7MM for many years and there is no comparison.[:)]0 -
i like to shoot 'dead' ,1st shot, no struggle or walk off...max 350yds & min 75yds...(223 or 6.5) 0 -
hk-91 i am glad you killed at that range now i dont feel that people will call me a liar when i say i have killed at 750 yds. with my BAR 7mm. yes i also knew my backstop[:D][;)] 0 -
about 70 yards with a 10 ga. shotgun w/ buckshot. Really I should not have dropped the hammer, but it seemed closer when it broke out of the treeline. swamp behind the field and all hunters were on my left and right. Gotta love that mag 10! 0 -
625 yds neck shot on a doe with a 7mm and hand loads 0 -

my .416 barrett will get that done plus some!!!!!
ps my scope is a bit nicer than that one.0 -
Deer? about 45 yards with a gun was a log shot. 12 yards with a bow.
Caribou, in Alaska with the wind blowing like sweet billy-be-dammed sideways and in 15 below temps. I killed four young bulls in a pile at 435 yards.0 -
About 110 yards. I've been watching the fields so I can "stretch out the legs" of my 25WSSM. I have precticed out to 300 yards and can hold all my shots within 3" of point of aim, most within 2" (off a rest which I take with me hunting). I feel I'm ready for 300 yards if the opportunity presents itself. Not what some people would call "long range" but it is to me. 0 -
i shot one once that was so far away the meat spoiled before i got to it,just kiddin' 0 -
