Socialized Medicine
I've been thinking. My wife has been in the hospital last week and I spent a lot of time thinking about stuff. BTW, she's fine. Even came out of the surgery with a brand new belly button.
Anyway, we have VA hospitals. This is the best example of America's nationalized socialized health care. I know it's a political hot button it criticize or nations hospital and medical plan for veterans, but this the best example of a national health care system in this nation. It's also probably the last place I would want to go to if I was sick.
Sorry, I just never heard much good things about VA hospitals.
Would you rather go to a VA Hospital or your local hospital? Maybe that's a poor choice. Nobody likes there local hospital.
So, would you rather go to a VA hospital or the hospital in the next town over?
So I ask myself, why do people want nationalized health care?

Government sponsored healthcare would be great! Look what they did for retirement with Social Security - isn't that way more hassle-free than investing YOUR money in an account for YOU and having WAY more than you recieve from Soc Sec when you retire? I know, you can still invest and save and collect that AND Soc Sec, but what if everybody had that 6.2% plus the employer match in their own account? WAY more than a measley little pittance of a Soc Sec check if you actually worked over all those years (by the way, not only did they reduce our retirement earnings, they turned what was intended to be a retirement program into a welfare program). And besides that, inadequate Medicare and Medicaid payments are DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for our current healthcare situation with the cost of healthcare.
Imagine the improvements we could see in healthcare with even MORE government control! There is already TREMENDOUS government oversight of healthcare, just not government CONTROL.0 -
Colt I have plenty experience of the UK socialized health system and it sucks.I come from the UK(proud US citizen now)and have plenty of experience of UK hospitals.Played rugby for 39 years so had lots of visits to different hospitals in the UK,lots of stiches, dislocations and broken bones.Had three sons over there, two are here now.Was back there about a month ago,my sons daughter had to go into hospital there for an operation on he gall bladder, she had to wait 7 months before they could get her in.Ive had experience oc 7 different hospitals here and all have been excellent to say the least. You can keep socialized medeicine for me. 0 -
I work in health care. Socialized medicine would be a nightmare. There are so many Canadians come to the US for prompt health care. The tax system in Canada is outragious. Now, in our state (Washington), our dem. govenor is working hard for socialized medicine. The state wants to place every child on a state health care paln. Right now, state healtcare pays 29 cents on the dollar for billed health care. I guess if you want to loose you medical providers to other states or other professions and lower quality medicine, then keep up with the push for socialized healthcare 0 -
vicg1, I don't buy the analogy of the school system and the medical system, but if that's the one you want to use, take a good look at the school system. [:D] 0 -

In the US we think everyone should have an education... but only those on welfare get free medical... why?
It's obvious the public school system isn't as good as it could be but everyone gets the opportunity to go to school. If they want to go to a private school they pay and do it. Why should medical be different? Shouldn't we try to both educate the masses and keep them healthy? Wouldn't that build a stronger country?
No.
You would nationalized a large portion of the nation's economy. You would also stifle innovation.
We do a crappy job of educating everyone. The public school system is, for the most part, a joke. You have a few bright bulbs that learn and you have a lot of people who can't compose a sentence making it to college, to the point where most colleges need to offer remedial English.
Even in graduate school (I am finishing up right now), schools offer remedial writing lessons for students who have made it this far but can't compose a sentence on their own. On the team assignments that I am assigned, I am amazed as to the low-quality work that supposedly-educated students submit as "final" that I then have to go through and spend hours editing and retooling.
I don't want my medical service delivered in a half-assed manner. I want good medical care. I can do it half-assed myself. And, so can you.
You have a choice in education, public or private. Why would you suddenly have no choice in health care?
You do have a choice in health care already. Why would I want the government involved further than it already is?
Why would YOU not have a choice in healthcare if socialized medicine options be available... You would. Some people need the help. I pay $3000 a year for schools even though no one in my family benefits from we. We all benefit from it as a country.
Here's a few questions that I'd like for you to ponder. I'd like for you to seriously consider them prior to giving knee-jerk, cradle-to-grave, nannyism answers:
1. What does the government do that is efficient?
2. What drives innovation?
3. What happens to the poor when they get sick (don't give a Michael Moore answer, look it up)?
4. Why do Canadians and Europeans, who have socialized health care, come to the United States and pay for health care out of their own pocket?
5. Why would you want to saddle someone with substandard health care, and offer decent health care only to the rich?
Please answer these questions, then perhaps we can have something to talk about. Right now, you're just spewing Michael Moore garbage.0 -
Why would anyone willingly and knowingly invite the government in any form into something so important as health care? Look at every well-intentioned social program the government has initiated and run and then honestly tell me it's been a success. Look at the schools in our cities. Federal, state and local governments have so befouled such a great cause as universal education that its original purpose has become irretreivably lost in a tangle of PC eduspeak, testing For Dollars and downwardly adjusted standards in every regard. And we would invite them into our hospital rooms? "That government which governs best governs least." Lastly, I don't see Americans flocking to Canada or Europe for heart transplants, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, cancer treatments, etc. I do see people from other parts of the world coming her for the best possible care in those situations. 0 -
Micheal Moore garbage? maybe. Maybe not who the hell knows.
I DON'T,
I don't believe for one minute that socialized medicine is 100% right OR wrong. nor do I belive that the system that we have works as good as it could and or should.
I have looked at Moores numbers
I have look at our current numbers
someone is lieing their arse off!!!!
all the numbers are conflicting. goes to show that there are two side to every coin.
goverment socialist or democratic
sounds like got dam religion to me
guess we all have to pick a side and have "faith" in that it is the right side.

Wasn't it Mark Twain that said "you got your figures, you got your statistics, then you got your damn lies" or something along those lines? A good statistician, or maybe just a good spin meister, can make numbers say pretty much anything.0 -
I haven't used a civilian hospital in years, and due to disability my complete health care is covered by the VA. That also includes vision, podiatry, mental health, chiropractic and dental.
I have been treated as well or better than any civilian health care system, my VA has modern facilities and can do just about any medical procedure that's done in the civilian sector.
My prescriptions are free and generic; I get them on time without any errors.
The VA system works.... and it's one system that doesn't accept illegal aliens!0 -
I think that "SHTF" health care should be government funded (ie. broken limbs, car wreck, other acts of God) everything else you pay for yourself.
My reasoning is this: I am a young, fairly healthy guy. Last 5 years I went to the doctor 4 times. Twice for sinus infection, once to have a wart frozen off, and once more when I thought I had a bacterial thing and wanted to make sure, since I was going to be sailing in Hawaii for spring break and did not want to deal with bacterial crap on the high seas.
The only reason I need insurance right now is if I am involved in a wreck or some other act of God. My parents and kid brother are in the same boat, healthy and rarely need to see a doctor.
So why the hell should our insurance pay for someone who is morbidly obese, diabetic, and continues to binge on pizza and drink "regular" (sugared) soft-drinks (I actually know such a person at KSU).
Can yo see my reasoning? My healthy family must pay insurance which is basically funding the chronically ill out of the fear that one of us may encounter an act of God and need emergency surgery.0 -
The entire concept of insurance is based on sharing the liability across a broad base.
"Cap liability limits for malpractice and insurance premiums paid by doctors goes down. How many doctors are forced to not handle certain patients because of lawsuit concerns?"...here we go - something else we can lay at the feet of lawyers. Not GB member lawyers, of course.
