Churches: Church of Christ
I was brought up in this church and thought I was fairly religious until I went to get married a second time. Preacher man said NO WAY cause she had already had a child(ours) and I was divorced.
I have not darkened a church door since. Nor will I ever.
How is it that one religion can say it is better than another religion?? Whose god is better than another god? If I remember correctly the Church of God believed that only their members will go to heaven. Also, they did not believe in instrumuntial music in church since a passage in the bible said "they made music in their hearts" Yeah, they also don't believe in drinking beer. Tom

Did a little research on the BS about no instruments in church. There are many references to playing instruments and singing in the bible. I'll be darned if dance isn't in there as well. I wonder what a certain Baptist I know will have to say about that one[:D]
Psalm 150:3-4 states, "Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet: praise Him with the psaltery and harp. Praise Him with the timbrel and dance: praise Him with with stringed instruments and organs."
In II Chronicles 29:25-28, we read that King Hezekiah ".set the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals, with psalteries, and with harps.for so was the commandment of the Lord by His prophets. And the Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets. And all the congregation worshipped, and the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded."0 -

-A few things:
Someone earlier said something along the lines of: "Who are we to say one religion's god is better than another?" Look, there's only one God, whether he's a Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddist or another, less well known god, such as the elephant god that some worship in Malaysia. There is only one God. If everyone remembers that, it would be much easier to be tolerant of how various faiths worship God.
Someone else noted: "The Church of Christ is a New testament Church. In the New testament there is no mention of making music with instruments as there is in the Old testament." All I can say is that you don't read any mention of someone taking a dump in the Bible either (as I recall), but I know everyone did. These forced sacrifices that various new religions impose, often arbitrarily church-by-church is BS hatched up by some devious preacher attempting to impose a personality cult over church members. It's not about God at all; it's about money.
Another said: "My point is that you should believe that your religion - whatever they may be - is the "right" religion and that all other religions are wrong. If not, then what is the point?" I agree with that in a slightly different way. I believe my religion is the right one for me and that all other religions are wrong for me. There's only one God, and if he is worshiped in various manners and no harm comes to others in the process, I know God accepts that.0 -

quote:If you don't believe that your religion is right, and every other religion is wrong, you are not very serious about your religion.
Another doctrine of the old-line conservative Churches of Christ. "If you ain't one of us, you ain't gettin' in."
IMNSHO, that is a pretty arrogant attitude, presuming to have all the answers, to know the Mind of God, and to actually pass judgement on and condemn others.
If you believe that your religion (or denomination) is right, and every other religion (or denomination) is wrong, you are apt to be a mite surprised when you get to Heaven and see all the folks there you didn't expect to see.
I am not saying any one religion is right or wrong.
I do not believe in any religion (which I believe is right and everyone who believes in religion is wrong) (however, I was baptised Catholic).
My point is that you should believe that your religion - whatever they may be - is the "right" religion and that all other religions are wrong. If not, then what is the point?
The pope recently was criticized for saying this about the Catholic religion. And why should be be criticized? He is 100% within his rights, both morally and spiritually, to think that he is right and the rest of the world is wrong.
Whether I believe or not is beside the point, I gained a lot of respect for the pope when he came out and said this.
On another note - I bottled a batch of Irish Stout this weekend, email me your address and I will send you a few bottles to sample. I added an additional bit of hops to this batch, so it should really have some extra flavor!
Whoa there... The Pope is [xx(] wrong.. I am Catholic also and insulted by his remark..
So you think other religions are just as right as yours? Like Islam? Or Hindu, Or Witchcraft? etc? That just doesn't make sense to me. I can't understand how someone can truly believe in their religion but not think that it is the only "right" religion that there is.
I am not suggesting that you don't respect the right of people to believe what they want! But while recognizing the right of Muslims to practive Islam, you should still think that they are wrong.
Well you answered you own question. So you believe your Christian religion is better than another Christian religion? Basically you have done everything the towelheads have asked.... to make us fight between ourselves. Their religions are not better or worse than ours, however when they start using violence to prove that.. this becomes another issue. And when the Papa made that statement about Catholics he again was instigating a war.. Christians vs. ???0 -
According to the Mormans Jesus is going to return to Independence Missouri.. Yep! Babtist In Kentucky say dancing is a sin.
Catholics dont recognize Protestants
Protestants dont recognize JWs
Baptists dont recognize Baptists in the liquere store on Friday night0 -
My responses on this subject were simply to answer someones questions to the best of my ability with the exception to the toilets and electricity statements. As for the use of microphones, electricity and toilets, etc., they do not add to or take from the service itself. If we are to go to the extremes of considering such things, then we would all need to meet outdoors as Jesus and his disciples most always did. Whether ones religion does or does not incorporate music or snakes or whatever into their worship service, that is between them and God. I don't ask that anyone agree or disagree with how our Churches worship just as I won't tell them how to worship in their Church. The entire reason for my responses was as said to answer an honest question that was posted.
As a last response I did state that in the Old testament music was mentioned, however I don't find mention of it in the New testament. Folks, I think that all Christian believers will agree that the bottom line here is that you believe in God and Jesus and that you keep your heart pure to the best of your ability. Exactly how you do that and where or how you worship is best left up to you, the individual to decide. It is not up to me or anyone else to choose for you. Hope that we can at least agree on this. swamp_thing0 -

Become a Catholic. They don't condone divorce either, but you make a big enough donation and you can have the marriage anulled. Like it never happened. The only downside is that the kids are then considered illegitimate.
Yup.
I played by your rules, and now you turn your back on me in my time of need.
Thanks!
You are welcome!
And you are also welcome to come to Mass every Sunday. You just can't participate. Feel free to donate when basket comes by you.
I still recieved those little envelopes in the mail for 5 years after my divorce.0 -

That's not in the contract.0 -
We also eat at church, we don't hassle anyone about divorce and remarriage, we recognize baptism in other churchs, and women have actually spoken out in the services to lead prayer, give lessons, and even (GASP!) serve Communion.
Funny you should mention this. At the COC I attend--I am not a member, but have been going there a couple of years--they absolutely do not allow women to hold any leadership roles. Women are not allowed to lead prayer, singing, or to serve communion or collect the offering. In fact, every Sunday first service there's an interpreter for the deaf. When it's a man, he's allowed to to stand up on the stage where the preacher stands. When it's a woman, she has to stand down on the floor. This past weekend we had a sermon that involved several people from the church saying a few words about where some folks are in their relationship to God. Four people were brought up from the congregation, three men and one woman. The three men were allowed up on stage, and the woman stood on the floor.
That said, about a year ago the church began have five chosen people a service sing in microphones to "fill out" the singing. A couple are women, and several people left the church over this. One group left over allowing women to "speak" during services, and one left because by having only some people use microphones the church is setting up two classes of worshippers.
Honestly, I think all of this is a bit silly. Women are people too. I am really, really, really surprised that the women of the church take this second-class citizen status. The preacher and some of the elders have apparently considered allowing a broader role for women in the church, but I'm not sure it will happen.
Oh, and don't even get them started on musical instruments during the service. Many of the people view it as the clear and absolute work of the devil.0 -
Musical instruments are in the New testament as well.
Revalation 5:8
Revalation 14:2-3
Revelation 15:2-30 -
OK, so I stand corrected. swamp_thing 0 -
Lots of infernal machines out there to tempt folks. [}:)]
Do you:
Withhold life saving medicine or blood transfusions from your kid?
Play with live poisonious snakes?
Ignore strides made in scientific research?
Believe outlandish tales of flying fiery chariots, women turning into pillars of salt, and the sun standing still?
You're in luck! Somewhere, there is a church of like-minded (Like-thinking would not be applicable) people. Enjoy![:I]0 -

tccox, this has been an interesting thread of comments to follow, but I keep returning to your original statement. It concerns me that you may have put your salvation on hold because of a pilicy in one church. Go find another one!
I started out in life as a Catholic, then was later a Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, and new belong to a small charismatic church (fun!). I realize now that Christianity is beautifully divided into a wide variety of churches, each with its own unique culture of worship. Keep shopping around, and pick the one that fits you best.
Can't walk that walk without a church family. Can't be a loer. Need the support, the prayer, the group worship, the accountability.
By the way, I do not agree with that pastor's position on divorce. Christ hates divorce, but hates misery more. I myself am divorced and remarried, and am a lay pastor.0 -
Suffice to say that there is a lot of bondage in the Church of Christ, but even so, the level of bondage seems to vary from congregation to congregation. I like my church. It is family.
If you REALLY want to experience freedom and acceptance, and maybe some weirdness, try out the United Churches of Christ, no relation to the Church of Christ. Look them up sometime.0 -

don't let one dimwitted preacher ruin your faith, if he had any sense in this day and age he wouldn't have said that, if you get out that easy your faith was not strong to begin with0 -
