Churches: Church of Christ
I was brought up in this church and thought I was fairly religious until I went to get married a second time. Preacher man said NO WAY cause she had already had a child(ours) and I was divorced.
I have not darkened a church door since. Nor will I ever.
How is it that one religion can say it is better than another religion?? Whose god is better than another god? If I remember correctly the Church of God believed that only their members will go to heaven. Also, they did not believe in instrumuntial music in church since a passage in the bible said "they made music in their hearts" Yeah, they also don't believe in drinking beer. Tom

The truth will set you free.
Tom, to me, it is a bit of irony that passage is slipped in the bible. What is ironic is that someone must think freely to recognize the truth. Something religion discourages.0 -

So, after all, its freedom that leads to the truth. [:D]
Yes, that's the ironic thing, about institutions of "truth."0 -

If someone pissed you off at a gun shop would you refuse to ever step foot into another one. Just curious.0 -
My church is a Church of Christ. I have been married four times, divorced three. And I drink beer.

why doen't the Church of Christ allow musical instruments? (just curious) 0 -
I understand there are no instruments because none are mentioned in the New testament. 0 -
The Church of Christ is a New testament Church. In the New testament there is no mention of making music with instruments as there is in the Old testament. Since the Church does not wish to add to or take away from the word of God, they decline the use of instrumental music. It is their belief that in order to be a Christian you cannot both live by the Grace obtained by Jesus and also follow the Old testament salvation under law. Dave 0 -

Not sure. I think it is because there is no mention of the use of instruments used in worship in the New testament. Instruments are mentioned in the Old testament, but not in the New. Perhaps because the Church was being persecuted and worship was done in hiding, and musical instruments might bring unwanted attention.
In my church, we spend a couple of years examining Church of Christ doctrine (dogma) and compared it to what is actually written in the Word. We left a lot of it behind, but retained a capella music as a preference, not as obedience to a rule. Personally, being brought up in the Christian Church, I like instrumental music, but I like my church family better.
We also eat at church, we don't hassle anyone about divorce and remarriage, we recognize baptism in other churchs, and women have actually spoken out in the services to lead prayer, give lessons, and even (GASP!) serve Communion.
We are a pretty relaxed group.0 -
"So, after all, its freedom that leads to the truth."
I think that's backwards. I feel it's the truth that leads to freedom....
Isn't freedom what the truth led this nation to back in the late 1700's?
And isn't freedom what we're now in the process of losing, due to the truth having been put in the back of the bus, and almost pushed out the back door?

Nunn, as you stated it is my understanding that it is not mentioned in the New testament. Also being a member of the Church of Christ I say this from what we practice and not just as a casual statement. We too have potluck dinners once a month. As far divorce and marriage, those that I have spoken with about this say it depends for one thing on whether the first marriage, divorce was prior to salvation, or, was the marriage ended due to such as infidelity or death of a spouse. Bottom line is most Churches of Christ will tell you they leave that between the persons involved and God. Now in no means am I stating what is or is not right in this case. I myself was married and divorced prior to now. Simply stated, when any Church starts to pass judgement on it's members, it seems that they are taking Gods role and I would steer clear of that. swamp_thing 0 -
If you don't believe that your religion is right, and every other religion is wrong, you are not very serious about your religion. 0 -
Become a Catholic. They don't condone divorce either, but you make a big enough donation and you can have the marriage anulled. Like it never happened. The only downside is that the kids are then considered illegitimate. 0 -

Another doctrine of the old-line conservative Churches of Christ. "If you ain't one of us, you ain't gettin' in."
IMNSHO, that is a pretty arrogant attitude, presuming to have all the answers, to know the Mind of God, and to actually pass judgement on and condemn others.
If you believe that your religion (or denomination) is right, and every other religion (or denomination) is wrong, you are apt to be a mite surprised when you get to Heaven and see all the folks there you didn't expect to see.0 -
I was once asked by two Mormon sisters who came into my store one day what religion I was? I said Christian. Then I ask them a question. Did they think their religion was better than any other religion? They said yes. I said to them they had some growing up to do and to be humble. I also told them my religion was not better than theirs. They both looked like deer in the headlights. 0 -

I am not saying any one religion is right or wrong.
I do not believe in any religion (which I believe is right and everyone who believes in religion is wrong) (however, I was baptised Catholic).
My point is that you should believe that your religion - whatever they may be - is the "right" religion and that all other religions are wrong. If not, then what is the point?
The pope recently was criticized for saying this about the Catholic religion. And why should be be criticized? He is 100% within his rights, both morally and spiritually, to think that he is right and the rest of the world is wrong.
Whether I believe or not is beside the point, I gained a lot of respect for the pope when he came out and said this.
On another note - I bottled a batch of Irish Stout this weekend, email me your address and I will send you a few bottles to sample. I added an additional bit of hops to this batch, so it should really have some extra flavor!0 -
That is well said Nunn. I too agree that to claim that no others but you will see heaven is foolish. When we first joined the Church of Christ, we too heard all of that stuff. Over the years that has become less and less spoken. I do believe that there are those that have never attended a Church service that will in fact be there. It is what they live, believe and follow that God sees. If they have accepted Christ and continue to live by his word then I think their salvation is assured. I also believe that one can at anytime lose their salvation through their own actions, but then, that is another subject that is best left alone I suppose.
The bottom line is that each of us is free to make the choices that will determine our ultimate fate, and often we don't make wise choices. It is, however, between each individual and God to wade through all of that. Sadly, many times folks are turned away due to the action of other members. True, it may show weakness on the part of those turned away, but I think those that bring this about will answer for it in the end.
Sorry, don't mean to turn this into a rant, simply stating my thoughts. swamp_thing0 -
I have searched to bible on this very subject.
I have found lots of references for reasons for divorce.
But I have yet to find where it says it is OK to remarry unless the other party is dead. After all, the vows do say "till death do us part"
Can anyone offer any scripture that says it is OK?
It may be there and I have missed it.0 -
Jesus said that if a man and woman divorce, for any reason but infidelity, and if either of them remarries, they commit adultery with the new spouse.
I think he was addressing a problem in the Mosaic Law, which allowed a man to "put away" his wife simply because he was tired of her, cutting her off from any of the joint estate. In the USA, this problem has been addressed by the law, and women don't have to worry about not getting their fair share, or more, in a divorce.
In any case, adultery is forgivable.0 -
in are church we only ask that you have accepted christ as your savior to get married,im not saying we dont allow none belivers at are church we want all the none belivers we can get we will then try to lead you to christ[:)]are beliefe is the only true way to heaven is to accept jesus christ as your persanol savior.that is the whole reason for his crucifition as far as marriage after divorce.we accept divorce when one of the to were commiting adultry or death.as far as getting re hitched we have no problem with it at are church.as far as music insturments we have a guy who plays the guiter piano violen..
MY SPELLING REALLY STINKS0 -
The only dividing factor amongst true Christians should be essential doctrine...the doctrine of Salvation. If this doctrine is sound, all the other issues become inconsequential...and we are told not to divide over them. What it all comes down to is that a church/denomination must recognize that the only way to salvation is by the blood of Christ and that there is nothing you can do to earn our salvation. The only way to reconcillation with God is through Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. If a church is sound on this doctrine and does not add or take away from it, then they are a true Christian church. That's not to say that they may not be sound on many other doctrines...but we are not to divide over those.
This "my church is right, your church is wrong" stuff is a bunch of hogwash...it all comes down to what the Bible has to say. The Bible is the Ultimate Arbitrator between what's right and what's wrong.0 -
"ECC", you are absolutley right. When we get to heaven there is not going to be a Catholic gate, church of Christ gate, Assembly of God gate, etc,,,there is only going to be one gate. I think we will all find that we were all off a bit.[:I] 0 -

Do they mention electricity and flush toilets in the bible. I guess your church does not use these either??0 -
It's interesting to note that Satan's name means "the accuser of the brethren" One of his tactics is to divide the brothers and sisters. Thats why Paul advised us "do not argue about disputable doctrine and genealogies."
If Church of Christ does not use musical instruments, and they do this with a pure heart to honor GOD, than I can't judge their sacrifice.0 -
What about a Jew's harp ??

Since we do not use a toilet or electricity in our worship services, it does not have anything to do with the conversation here. I do realize that some need to take things completely out of context, and this is a classic example of that. No problems here, we all have to do what we have to do. You don't use microphones, modern heat, air conditioning, or lights in the worship services? An organ playing to singing is no different than a microphone being spoken into. I think if you look around your worship service you will see the application of many things which are not mentioned in the bible. To suggest something cannot be used unless it is mentioned in the bible is ridiculous (as well as not being in the bible).0 -

So you think other religions are just as right as yours? Like Islam? Or Hindu, Or Witchcraft? etc? That just doesn't make sense to me. I can't understand how someone can truly believe in their religion but not think that it is the only "right" religion that there is.
I am not suggesting that you don't respect the right of people to believe what they want! But while recognizing the right of Muslims to practive Islam, you should still think that they are wrong.0
