I always thought everyone's first gun was either a Marlin 60, Ruger 10/22, or a Remington Nylon.

now, here's my question: i've read about how this gun is larger than a .380 and smaller than a 9mm....so what kind and brand of ammo would you guys suggest?

Re: Ammo- 9mm Makarov is a cartridge separate from any other 9mm. Yo answer your question- use 9mm Makarov ammo. NOT 9mm Luger/ Parabellum etc. Several cartridge makers load it- and you can check with some of the wholesalers for milsurp ammo.

I think you can get a .380 ACP barrel for that pistol, too. Not exactly a drop-in, since it is pinned to the frame, but it is not a hard swap. You have a lot more choices for good performing ammo in the .380.

I'd look for something larger than .380 but smaller than 9mm--perhaps by Remingchester?

Just kidding. Man, if the gun goes bang when you pull the trigger--provided you've found the right ammo, that is--you should be excited. Guns are to enjoy, until you need to use it to protect yourself. And if that is ever the case, here's hoping you are able to enjoy telling the story of how it worked FOR you. Congrats!

henry: thanks for the links. i really liked the first one. it has a lot of info for mr to go through.

nunn: i read that. i like the .380, a guy at the range let me shoot his ppk. the pa-63 is the closest thing for my budget. might look into the barrel swap in the near future.

everyone: as for a range report...hopefully i will be able to give that as soon as it arrives. i'm hoping to pick it up wed. or thurs. and hope chuck or bill at the range can help me safety test and guide me to a good ammo choice as well. i wanted to ask you guys first because of the untapped fountain of knowledge you guy possess (yes, i'm sucking up [8D]). i'll let ya know as soon as i bring it home. now i'm saving up for my next purchase. an airweight .38 for my fiance. she likes revolvers better. wish i could find one under $250, but hey, just gotta save up is all. My understanding, but not experience, is that the 9MM Mak is a pretty hot small self defense round. The pistol is very good looking.

I think you should maybe work on reloading for the Mak.

Winchester has started making ammo (95grn FMJ, brass case)in 9x18. I think it's actually made by S&B for Winchester...it's good stuff.

Otherwise, honestly, Wolf, Silver/Brown/Golden Bear, Sellier&Bellot...if it's anything like my Maks (P64 Polish, Bulgarian, DDR), it'll eat anything and ask for more.

    Enjoy your new toy!
