Tori goes back to school. (another ?)

Tori is thinking about heading back to college to become a Dentist.
We'd end up moving south of town, she'd take the Tiburon to commute, and I'd be trading in the Element on a pickup.
We're 23 now. 6yrs of schooling(5yrs maybe, depending on how many of her credits transfer). We'd be 30 before having kids.
What are your opinions on this matter. Kids now, or later?
Do you think Dentistry is a good field to be in?

Before I settled on Architecture as my major, my dad was pushing for me to consider Radiation Technology.
With a 2yr AS at Ivy Tech she can get her cert as a Radiation Technologist.
Starting salary around here is around 52k/yr. We have a huge new hospital being built in town(Clarion) and they'll be looking for personnel.
I mentioned it before and she had given it some thought. Maybe I'll see what her thoughts are.

Wasn't it just a couple months ago that she was thinking about being a dental hygenist (sp?)? Why is it that all the women that work in a dentist's office are either old or young and hot? 0 -
cubs, my advice is to let her decide. your still young enough to wait a few years to have children and still enjoy them. training and school is hard when your trying to raise a family[;)] 0 -
I will be 36 soon.. kiddo is 12. Most of the people I went to school with waited to have kids and theirs are 0-5 or 6. You have NOOOOOOOOOOO idea how happy I am that I had mine younger! Much harder to build a biz with a toddler in the mix. Not to mention that I will have some great years to enjoy and will still be young enough to really enjoy them!
Edit: I also own my own business, have a higher education and am makeing more $ than 95% of them. It's all about commitment and makeing the most of your/her time.0 -
If you have kids now she will never be a dentist. Just my opinion, but I`d wait. She can always go to school a few years and if she should change her mind about being a dentist have kids then. 23 is young.You have time to think about it. Haveing kids is an energy draining ,full time,life time commitment and may get in the way of school.Again,it`s just my opinion that I`ve gained from my own experience. 0 -
Dentistry is a fine field (one of my five brothers in law is a dentist) but any medical field (MD, DDS, DVM, ect.) takes a lot of hard study and she can forget all about free time for her hubby (that is you Cubs). If she does head for dental school then postponing kids to age 30 is quite likely because she won't even have time to look at you for 6 years, much less....[}:)]. Professional degrees, which are all post graduate (masters level or beyond) are extremely demanding of time and money so a firm commitment from both of you is going to be needed before she heads down the road to becoming Dr. Tori. 0 -
Got a son that will be 30 in a couple of days. No kids , not married. No priorities but himself. Don't be selfish. Get a baby in the oven now.. Don't forget that the sooner you have them the quicker they leave the nest. Seen them old folks at graduation? 0 -

If she joins the National Guard or Reserves as an x-ray tech, she can get the same education and get paid for it instead of having to pay money for it, and not worry about getting deployed ever unless she wants to. 0 -

30 is not that old to have kids, and you'll want to finish all of your school before you have them. I had my oldest at 27 and my youngest at 31 and I wouldn't have traded the time getting to know my wife for anything. We are closer because we waited 6 years before having them.
I decided to get back to school to finally get my degree just recently and I feel that I never have a chance to spend with my with and kids, it all goes to school. So do the right thing and get a life before you make a life.0 -

Don't wait to have your kids....they aren't any NICER to you because you are old and all worn out so you may as well have a couple while your nerves and joints can take the mess they put you through.
I just paid my dentist nearly $800 in CO-PAYS for my "new tooth" (remember all the pain I was in about three months ago...well it led to a root canal and a cap on a molar) and I have no earthly idea what my insurance paid for these services.
Between the five of us....I would say that dentistry is a great field to be in if you based what our family pays for care. **Plus, we all have really good teeth....no cavities and only a RARE problem to deal with....I couldn't imagine what kind of money it would be if there were "issues" with any of our teeth.**0 -
Heres a bright idea, don't have kids and be able to run around the house naked with your wife anytime you want, or be able to go on this trip or that trip with the money you would of sunken into children. [:D] 0 -

Hey Cubs. I'm 29 and my first is on the way. I've just finished my school last year. Don't have a regret in the world about this at all. As far as dentistry, any medical field is good money. And more gun purchases[:D][:D] JM .02 0 -

Cubs that is a bunch of whooowie, they all take 18 yrs to raise and leave. im 29 going on 30 and your the first to know that, i have one in the oven. me and my wife both went to school and are both doing what we want to do for the next 15-20 yrs. it was hard to wait that long to have a kid do to the fact, that the wife's family is mormon. most mormon girls marry 19-20 yrs old and before or shortly after they are 21 they have 1 kid with anonther on the way. we waited so that we could get better established and gather a few toys and now we are ready,we both work, and are making decent money and she will be able to go 2-3 months without working after "IT" is born and take care of the kid and we will be fine. I've had my fun it's time to get serious and settle down. you and your wife are still young, enjoy it while it last. there are just some things you cant do when your older. but raising kids aint one of them. in fact i think that it will be easier when your older, you will know more and knowing is half the battle.

Cubs, what I meant by that statement was that life will be much easier if you and Tori are established in your careers (Get a life) before you jump into having children (Make a life). My wife has been a teacher at a private school for the past 12 years and I see this in action everyday. There are always two different camps of people:
1) The young couple who are struggling financially just to make it day by day. They drop the kids off at the school at 07:00 and pick them up at 19:00. One of the parents work at a long distance so they can make good money but spends 3 hours a day on the road. The other parent is going to school full time to get their MBA/DR and is working a part time job just to help out. The children become an afterthought as they only see there parents when they wake up and again before they go to bed.
2) The older couple who decided that it would be in the best interest of the children for them to be established in their careers before having kids. They work local to the school so they see there kids often and will stop by and have lunch with their kids. These are the parents who are at every field trip, dance recital and baseball game. They will pick up their kids early on a Friday so they can go to Disneyland.
The difference between the ages is only 10 years. I know, when your young you think "10 Years!!!" but it'll be here before you know it. Cubs, I did it the wrong way and I am in type 1 above, I would like to see you do it the proper way and get into type 2. So keep you're head on straight and you'll be able to get there.0 -
What is it with Americans that you HAVE to have a kid? I don't understand it. I'll be 40 in October, and have NO desire to have a kid, yet everyone thinks I should!
My wife feels the same way.....

My wife's dentist was originally an underwriter for an insurance company and decided to go to dental school when she was around 30. She now has a very successful practice. My younger son, who already had a Masters Degree in International Business and was a partner in a small coffee house chain decided to chuck it at age 30 to go to law school. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and now is a partner in a Boston Firm ( not Crane, Poole and Schmidt). Do it while you can!

I consider myself in the type 2 above, but a younger version. I bring in twice the average salary for our town, have very little debt, and already investing in my future.

Bringing kids into a marriage with problems is asking for trouble with a capitol T....and it doesnt matter that you are bringing in even 10 times what everyone else is bringing in etc or how you have invested for your future...
She should go to school, get her degree(s)...after all she is only doing what should be done...investing in HER future....and in all likihood yours as well...0 -

Beth, by saying "my" future above, I meant "our" future.
We had some rough spots about 6-7 months ago.
Times together now have been better than they ever were. We're really starting to grow together. Coming up on 4yrs now.0
