Greasy cheeseburgers and great ice cream sodas
Okay, I'm a child of the 50's and back in Brooklyn, NY we had a few really great joints that served real greasy cheeseburgers - the real McCoys AND the absolute best in town - and also a few ice cream parlors that turned out the best ice cream sodas, egg creams, vanilla Cokes et al. Holsteins. Wilsons. The Ridge. The Royal. Thumann's. Bob & Sylvia's. And a few other truly great places that are no more.
What about where you grew up? Where you live now? Any places you care to name?
Or are you a modified faux cheeseburger lover, i.e. today's inferior fast food chain version of this true culinary phenomenon?

I remember when my folks took us out to the country (this was in the 70's) for great chili dogs and even better ice cream. Now it's not in the country any more due to urban sprawl. Some of those places are still around like Zesto's, Polly's Freeze, Pattie's. There was one place out in front of a farm that is now right in the middle of a shopping center. 0 -

In my opinion, these are the best in the country.

Place called Dirty Martin's on the UT Austin campus. Been around for atleast 60 years if my memory serves me right. Greasiest and most delicious burger I've ever had. They just remodeled a bit of the restaurant and while they were at it decided to clean the fan above the fryer, bu then realized it hadn't been working for atleast 40 years! Now that's a lot of crud! That's beside the point though, great burgers, shakes, anything there is good, and now I want one really bad. 0 -
Back in the time, i loved to go to A&W rootbeer stands and get a cold frosty glass of Rootbeer and whatever was good on the menu. least I should forget CURB GIRLS[:D][:D] 0 -

As a kid I had no idea what a cheeseburger was, and little idea of what a shake was. When my parents needed hamburger, they went to the butcher and got ground tenderloin! It just was that cheap.
That was rural South Africa in the 1970's.
My intro to hamburgers was McDonalds (in the USA--early 1980's). I think the treat was not so much the food (how can McD compare with ground tenderloin?), as the novelty of eating out. And eating out was a novelty.
Since then I've learned that some burgers are better than others. In MPLS/St. Paul, MN, the Malt Shop--it was a single shop when I first visited it but is becoming a regional chain--serves up a kick-ass burger and (not surprisingly) a good shake, too.
I guess that's the only one I'll name, because it's the only one that really stands out. But everywhere I've lived in the last ten years, I've kept track of who serves up a good burger, and visited those restaurants repeatedly. Not all burgers are alike.0 -
I also remember being extremely disappointed with the soft-serve ice-cream in this country, to the extent that I discounted it entirely as a source of pleasure. For the most part, it tastes little better than sugared water.
Then, in a town in SE Wisconsin (I forget the name but it claims to be the chocolate capital of the world) the locals were RAVING about this 'frozen custard' shop. So I went and got the frozen custard.
It was DELICIOUS. Actually, it was how I remembered soft-serve ice-cream to be from South Africa. I've not found anything else like it in this country.
Is that town called Hershey, or am I imagining that?

Bea`s drive in on the west end of town and the Dome on the east side. Great places to hang out.Now gone forever. 0 -

..A little place called simply the "Snack Shop". Had the best fries on earth, though a buddy would always get a big plate of mashed taters and gravy, almost more than one could eat for 50 cents. And yes, a small coke was a nickel, and they'd add cherry syrup for free. Oh, and chrome juke box selectors at each booth.
..Out on the highway, was Dog 'N Suds. Good dogs and frosty mugs of root beer. And of course, car hops.0 -
We had a couple of local joints for chee'burgers.
The Silver Shanty was originally a dining car from a railroad. It's been gone a long time.
The Snacker was attached to a house, I think maybe that many years before my time it might have been the carriage house (garage for you really young folks) It lasted until Wal-Green had to build a new "drug store" across the street from CVS and bought up half the block.
And we had a Dog -n- Suds root beer place, complete with girls on rollerskates to serve the drive in customers.0 -
Last time I was passing through there was still such a greasy spoon in Logansport, IN. The White House. Only open for breakfast & lunch.
We're getting a Culver's in Crawfordsville. They're building it right next to the Super Walmart.0 -
We used to have a place downtown called Petes but was owned and run by his brother gus. Best damn cheesburgers ever, gooey and at least four or five napkins and a shirt sleeve to wipe up the drips but yum yum 0 -
I just remembered one I haven't thought of in years. Trolley Inn. It looked like an old trolley car and sat next to the river in Jeffersonville IN. Those were good burgers. 0 -
My uncle and aunt owned a "K&N Rootbeer" stand in the town I grew up in. Homemade rootbeer in frosted mugs! [:p] Unbelievable stuff! Puts A&W to shame. Great, greasy cheeseburgers, taco pies, awesome onion rings. It closed about 25 years ago. [:(] 0 -

I'll jump on the Culvers Wagon. Gotta love a frozen custard malt that is so thick you can hold it upside down for 5 minutes and not lose a drop!

we had a pizza joint in new york nothing like a slice of pizza just dripping in grease no pizza place around here can come close and a hot dog off of a street vender 0 -
Had a place in Marion, AL. called the "Burger Treat". Man, they made a burger that was about six inches in diameter. Get it with the works, plus fries and a choc. shake. OHHHHH it was good. Also had great BBQ samiches.[:D]
In Greensboro there was Mitzi and Mike's.
Two places in Selma I used to go to were Dairy Queen and original Shoney's Big Boy.
There was a dairy bar in Demopolis (I can't remember the name), that we would stop by after the dirt track races. They made the best shakes.0
