Greasy cheeseburgers and great ice cream sodas
Okay, I'm a child of the 50's and back in Brooklyn, NY we had a few really great joints that served real greasy cheeseburgers - the real McCoys AND the absolute best in town - and also a few ice cream parlors that turned out the best ice cream sodas, egg creams, vanilla Cokes et al. Holsteins. Wilsons. The Ridge. The Royal. Thumann's. Bob & Sylvia's. And a few other truly great places that are no more.
What about where you grew up? Where you live now? Any places you care to name?
Or are you a modified faux cheeseburger lover, i.e. today's inferior fast food chain version of this true culinary phenomenon?

The Nook (Corner of Hamline and Randolph, right across from Cretin-Derham Hall HS in St. Paul, MN), have the best burgers on the face of the Earth. Hand pattied fresh beef, on bakery fresh buns (from the bakery right up the street)...as well as FRESH fries that were a potato just minutes before they hit the frier. I have made the two-hour drive on more than one occasion just for one of their burgers. And, gotta love their slogan--"Have you had your Nookie today?"
The don't do the shakes/malts/sodas thing...but I'd much rather have a nice cold Summit EPA with mine, anyway.
Second best is Big Kahuna Burger. "My--that is a TASTY hamburger!"0 -
Whimpy's had the best burger,Dairy Queen had a burger with smokehouse sause and thick malts.,A&W wasn't bad they had some great rootbeer floats. 0 -

When I was a young whippersnapper you went to Brother's for the best hamburger/cheesburger and to the Dog House for the best hotdog in town. I haven't had a good hot dog in over thirty years. The closest you can get to a good one now is at Timmy's in Victoria.
I remember when McDonald's opened in High Point, NC. They had hamburgers for 10?, cheeseburgers for 15?, fries for 10?, coke for 10?. That was the entire McDonald's menu. We called them catsup burgers, but we lined up to get them. You had two choices on the hamburger. You wanted it or you didn't. It was an assembly line, no special orders.0 -

Yep, nothing like a slice of real New York pizza and those Sabrett's sidewalk "tube steaks" and onions. I was born and raised in Brooklyn and lived there into my 40's. Some of the best pizzas can still be found there AND also on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. catania's was a big favorite of mine in the 70's and 80's. They also made mini-calzones which were outrageous. As for hot dogs, the original Nathan's Famous on the Boardwalk in Coney Island is still unrivaled IMHO.0 -
When we would go down to Grants Pass from Portland to visit my grandma my father would always stop by this place called Rice Hill. Had great shakes, we never ate there though my father was very conservative with money haha.
Not sure of the name, but tons of people stop at Rice Hill to get their shakes.0
