in my own opinion sex before wed lock just isn't right to me, and parents should be held heavily responsible for this, they need to sit down and explain how this works to their kids no matter how awkward and embarrassing this may seem to do.

Whether you are for or against pre-marital sex, kids need to know a few things - the basic facts on how pregnancy occurs, that yes it feels good, that no, you should at least wait until you are emotionally capable of dealing with all the mental side effects of a sexual relationship (esp. a first at a younger age), etc.

pre-marital sex, sexual persuasion, etc. is typically more of a religous discussion, and I really don't like to go there, at least here on GB. Too many fundies (sorry guys!).

Edit - daughter is 6, the concept has been introduced. Son is 3 (just turned), and we're just happy he doesn't strip down and go streaking at daycare.

I don't have kids. But, I can tell you from the reverse side.

My folks told me growing up that sex was okay, just that I should be prepared for the consequences (accidents and diseases).

Despite my folks telling me that sex was okay, I waited until I got married.

A problem in our culture is that Teens are taught to view children as a burden instead of a Blessing. The media is telling them about condoms so much that they are creating an environment of fear of children, instead of love.

Hence the problem. You have parents that put religious slant on normal biological functions that they probably never learned themselves.
Ah, the generation of home schooled idiots to come.

How many stick their head in the sand and let their kids learn on the street?

My "talk" consisted of "You're a pretty smart kid, you understand how it works, right? If you ever have any questions let me know."

Couldn't be any worse than the current "pecking order". Bob try to be more positive and helpful! It's so much easier to point out problems, than to solve them. You never solve problems by calling people names.

I gave kids a long hard consideration and opted for a vasectomy. I am not cut out to be anyone's dad. I am endlessly amused by parents, particularly dads who believe their daughters will act differently in the back seat than they themselves did. Nothing like living in denial for spectacular views.

Thank You, we need less folks whose goal is to be "endlessly amused"[}:)]

I have two boys, 14 and 11. I have had the detailed talk with both of them. Anybody parent that does not, is responsible for the consequences. It is just like teaching kids about guns. Either the parents teach the kids about sex, just like they should be teaching them about the rest of life, or they will have to fumble around and find out for themselves. Which is where unwanted pregnancy comes from.

As our kids were growing up, we taught them about sex, and about what could happen. (disease and babies). We knew that you can't always be there and the time would come when they would become sexually active. Fact of life, It Happens! My wife gave them condoms and always told them on their way out "to wrap it, before you tap it" Luckily we only had boys, and no girls. Don't know what I would do if I had a daughter.

I explained the facts of life to my two boys at about 10 years old. I remember I learned of them on the street at about 11. We covered alot over the next couple of years. I wanted them to be safe and healthy. Also wanted them to know there were a lot of things more important.(though it may not seem like it at the time) Tried to teach them to think for themselves and know what the results might be. My Dad was a good father but it was a different world back then. I just try to do the best that I can for my children.

What happens when you tell a teenager not to smoke/drink? Most will go out and do it. If you tell children that sex is bad/wrong, they will rush out and try it. We need to "educate" not tell them NO directly. Tell them that if they make the decision to be safe and be educated. Parents should not force their opinions/views upon their children. Parents should offer their advice and educate children on the consequences/benefits of sex.

I can't say what i want to. I'm just glad we dont have kids. As for the home schooled i think that they WILL be a generation of idiots. My helper/apprentice was home schooled and can't take any joke or harrassment from the guys at the shop, can't read a measuring tape, can't read very well, can't even write a material list while i'm driving, can't follow instructions, Don't know crap about girls or the real world, I'm teaching him everything, plus a trade. AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! BTW, this isn't a rant if it sounds like one to some of you.

As somebody who's taught sixth grade sex ed for years (it's basically you need to take a shower every day, these are the parts, here's how it works, don't have sex until you're married, and you need to take a shower every day), I can say that the general level of understanding is not that bad. In fact, the unit is pretty thorough, and I imagine if some of the people on this board took the final quiz, they'd get a few wrong!

That said, there are about seven of the thirty in the class who have no idea. Just not the first clue. A woman has a baby out of her fanny, a girl needs a blood transfusion after she menstruating, etc. And, most worrisome, it's OK to only take a shower once or twice a week.

2 boys, 2 girls. Had the talk at about age 11. We discussed here's how it works, and here is what goes along with that. Yes, we discussed condoms- there are folks that are dying because they did not. Discussed that girls can be just as horny as guys, and that it only takes once. And that waiting is good- but if you don't, you need to act in a responsible manner. Seems to have worked. When they are little, you teach them to protect selves when crossing street. When they get bigger, same thing, different topic. Youngest grandaughter is 10, and told me that she and Mom have had "the talk". And for everyone that thinks sex ed should be taught by the parents, and not the school- start talking!

I have two daughters, one 22 and the other 18 and we explained the facts of life to both the girls while they were still early in grade school. It turns out both of them already knew all most all of what we were planning on teling them! A few short years later the topic changed from "Here is where babies come from" over to "Here is how you prevent having babies". THAT conversation is the most important one you'll have and ignoring it can lead to disaster for all parties involved. Waiting until kids get into high school before you tell them about birth control is going to be too late (grandpa [V]).

One thing that is certainly different today from when I was a teen is that back then penicillin could cure anything you got. We had never heard of genital herpes, and the Africans hand not gotten HIV from eating monkeys yet. Today you can die from unfortunate choices in partners. My best girl and I once sweated out an extra 15 days until her period started, and I was calculating what I could earn, what an apartment would cost and so on, but today I might make some different choices that I did then. It does not appear that many kids today are doing it differently than we did 40 some years ago.

I have two sons, one in college and the other in high school. We started having appropriate conversations about sex long before they were teens. We continue to have discussions about personal responsibility concerning sexual issues.

In the conversations over the years, we also have discussed
God's plan for marriage and sexual intimacy. In the long run my boys will make their own choices, but they have been given all the information they will need.

My parents did the same thing with me and it's worked quite well.

Being a rare breed, we Arkadians cherish life. I say have and raise children while you are young and fruitful. Those that wait until later in life and have kids out of fear that no one will be there to take care of them as they get old are just as bad. I never understood condoms and think that sex is for procreation, not just pleasure.

Handed my older daughter two condoms and told her that if she was going to have sex, she needed to protect herself from STD's and from making me grandfather at a young age.

Yes, to answer the question, talks were had with both daughters and things were explained. I said in no uncertain terms that ALL men - and I repeated the words "ALL men" two more times - are lying dirt bags with one thing on their minds and no, they won't still love you in the morning and no, they won't respect you either.

Wasn't at all difficult for me to speak about with them.

IF, and I mean IF, I have kids, my deterrent will be sitting in some blown out stained underwear drinking some cheap beer while cleaning my Model 70 300 Win. Mag. when my daughter brought her boyfriend home for the first time. I would explain to young junior that my daughter's body was a sacred temple that did not need exploring by him and his tool. Also, if some exploration were to occur that he could run, but he would die tired from a Sierra 168 gr. Match King. [:D]

Reality is that most people start having sex in their teens. All the handwringing and praying in the world will not stop that.

How many actually have sat down with their kids and explained the biological mechnanisms and ramifications that take place? At what age? How many stick their head in the sand and let their kids learn on the street?

Teaching kids about condoms is like teaching a kid to use a fire extinguiser. You are not condoning starting a fire, but at least the kid knows how to put one out.[;)]

The christians of america (especially the catholics) try to make it clear to their kids that they will "burn in hell" if they commit fornication... be it as a minor or adult. I've heard some go so far as to say sex, even after marriage, is only acceptable if being practiced for the purposes of procreation.

This is the product of idiots, tyrants, and "religion"

Its interesting to note that sex ed started to be taught in schools in the early 1970's. The teenage pregnancy rate and birth rate out of wedlock has exploded since then. Today in America we have more methods of birth control then ever and more access than ever and we have more children born out of wedlock, more abortions and more teen pregnancies than EVER. As a side note we have less Christian influence in schools than ever as well. Coincidence ?
