If you actually read the account, Noah does look out the window for dry land. At his age he was probably a bit near sighted though. Gen. 8:13

Not to mention that Mt. Araat (sp?) is well above treeline.

Noah didnt land on Mt Ararat: In Genesis 8:4 it says he did, however in Genesis 11:12 inplies that they landed at a far different location. According to that verse the survivors traveled from some unidentified location east of Babylon and moved westward towards Babylon. It was the plain of Shinar, the territory surrounding babylon. So it cant be both ways. Which was it Ararat? ,or the other place? Sure wish those writers would have gotten their myths right.

Ararat is way to the north and slightly to the west of babylon. the survivors would have had to travel southeast of Ararat, NOT WEST to get to Shinar..HMMMMMMMMMM just another little error overlooked by the writers..[}:)]

Considering that all of the major religions have a Great Flood story, I don't put this in the "fiction" category. The fact that you are atheist and posing the question seems a bit duplicitous of you at best.

What was your point? To be smug and point out an error in the Bible? To convert others to your religion (atheism, like it or not, is a religion)? To simply make others feel bad?

Something tells me that you were waiting for someone to take the bait.

    Have a nice day.

Atheism is not a religion.. The fact that you got upset is because you have no arguement as to the validity of the story and that there is more than one account of the flood that was invented from other floods found in other religions.

However it is a valid question for someone that is not blinded by superstition and believes these stories. Ever wonder why there are so many discrepencies and myths used in the bible???

You religious people sure get your dander up when someone points out fallacies in your religion.. HMMMMMMMM but the first to condemn those that dont believe in your fairy tales..[:D]

When you understand why you reject my beliefs, then you will understand why I reject your beliefs..

Atheism is most certainly a religion. The fact that you refuse to admit it does not change what atheism is.

I'm not mad at you. I pity you (and don't care if you want my pity or not). I believe you posed a question for the expressed and sole purpose of knocking down the answer once it came. What a sad life you must lead to get joy out of this sort of tactic.

Do I wonder why there are discrepancies in the Bible? No. I know that the Bible was penned by man and that there are errors in translation. I know that much of the Old testament was delivered by word of mouth and that mistakes were made. However, I also believe that the basic message of the Bible is sound, that it is not full of discrepancies, and that the message is a good one. Minor errors (and they are minor) do not sway my faith.

Atheism, is a religion Classic. It is a belief that cannot be proven nor disproven. In this case its not a derogatory statement, its yours, and many others belief system, which you are entitled too. Be it based in the individuals cognitive reasoning by way of perception, emotion, or a combination of both.

It takes just as much, or more faith to be an atheist than it does to be a Christian. Something cannot come from nothing. The most logical argument is intelligent design. Either the universe was always here eternally, it was created by some force, or nothing exists and we are hallucinating. How could the universe have always been here without some starting point? If the "big band theory" is true, how did the countless solar systems come from nothing? And if nothing exists, why am I at work today. The most logical theory is that God, infinite in knowledge and power, created everything.

For all the fundamentalist Christian inerrantists who take the Bible liteally as the infallible word of God, How do you explain this "contradiction" in the Bible without using the tiresome "how-it-could-have-been" scenario?

When someone says, "It's raining cats and dogs" do you look out the window and expect to see cats and dogs falling from the sky?

No, he would point out that it really isn't raining cats and dogs, and that this was some trumped up saying that man created in order to subjugate others, and then tell you how enlightened he is and how backwards you are.

Atheist: firm believer that there is no God as defined by religious institution. Not to be confused with "agnostic," which is someone who is still thinking about it, however atheism is not a religion because the term "religion" means re-ligation, or re-connection, and implies a uniting process that brings yourself and the notion of God together as one. Atheism is a belief that religion is BS.

Also, the story of the flood and the ark was a Sumerian story much older than the people who wrote the bible. Sorry Bible thumpers, you're using a recycled story: the main theme is the same, only the names and dates have been changed.

I see more God in a tree than the bible it's printed on.

    Sorry slick,

    1. Atheism is a religion. It is the religion of there being no God. It is based upon belief and faith.

    2. I've already stated that every major religion has a flood story. That it was penned before the Bible goes without saying. The Bible was written AFTER the flood, not before it.

    Thank you, drive through.

Genesis 11:12 Talks about Arphaxad, not mount Ararat?

From the biblical archaeology society Ararat was a region and when the bible spoke of Ararat it was of a mountain "in" Ararat so could have been one of many mountains, but the following report in the bible has the directions all backwards. And if it wasnt Ararat and was arphaxad, then one is right and the other a lie.. Which one???
The lame excuse used that Noah was getting Old and couldnt see very well is lame to say the least,, Hell just 40 days before he set sail could see well enough to build a freakin boat.. [:D] But he couldnt see over the side of the boat to see if the land was dry??? Now thats funny[:D][:D]

Could you just explain when exactly the oral Jewish account originated again, in regards to the oral Summarian account? It's kind of hard to say which was actually first then isn't it?

all of the bible is retold old stories,,I even had a preacher tell me this once,,I believe in the morals of the bible just not the book itself,,all the people who use the "BIBLE TOLD ME SO " argument are taking it literial,,,How do you take stories told around a camp fire as the absolute truth,,it was retold many many times before someone wrote it down and even then man put his spin into it,,even the story of Jesus could be argued as a retold story,,The story of Zeus coming to earth and having a mortal son "Hercules" is much older than the story of Jesus,,,now I'm not saying Jesus did not exist,,just that you can not take the bible word for word,,their is just as much myth and superstition in it as truth and they are all blended together,,

I am kind of thinking that only fairy's don't believe in fairy tales. You should take a look at the predictions of some of the religion books out there, as of what the signs of the times will be. There are several books besides the Bible that have close accounts from 2000 plus years ago until now as to what was going to evolve.

I think also it is your type to beat your own drum, just because YOUR RELIGION has not had anyone smart enough in it to write a book of history and accounts.

Atheism is a a doctrine or belief, that does not qualifiy it as a religion. Properly speaking it is simply a lack of belief in a theistic supreme being.

As for Noah, who gives a rat's ass?

Up until the days of the 1st Crusade the Bible said the Ararate mountains or region. It was the crusaders who named the tallest mountain Mt Ararat. The story of Noah came from Abraham. Abraham came from the City of Or, which was part of the Persian Empire(the Arayn Emprire, which the Greeks called Persia). The story of Noah was Persian. Originally the Jewish(Hebrew) religon was the religon of the Persians. Which in India evolved into the Uppanishad Writtings, which evolved into the Hindu Religon.

I too feel that atheism is a religion. I used to describe myself as atheist until I realized that I had no proof for my beliefs, and that there never would be definitive proof.

Agnosticism is the only philosophy that is not a religion. Basically, lacking hard evidence one way or the other, I'm content to say that its a question that will never be answered, and so we shouldn't worry about it and get on with our lives [:D]

Wonder if the atheists are happy that the Christians founded the freedoms that they have too? Freedom in and of itself is a Judeo/Christian ideal. Oh well... I shall not cast anymore of my pearls.
