Yep, like to see up-dates. You should be proud of it when you get done. 0 -
I like the photo where your standing on top of the motor.
My first thought was trust me it will fit!0 -
Engine will be the ZZ502 502cube 502 HP 560TQ Big Block that will run on pump gas.........
Specs are here.......

I hear it's easier to pull the motor when your not on TOP of it..[:D] 0 -
Is that the original, numbers matching 454 that kaboomed?
Keep us posted. That is one heck of a ride.0 -
Is that crank wiped or not? I see a "thumbs-up".And you were talkin about it bein AFU .... If the bearings burnt or spun, and didn't kill the crank, that's a perf. excuse to turn it into a "splay-bolt"..[^]

IT is not the original 454 and the crank is now in two pieces. It supposedly is an original SS454 column shift auto with a bench seat. I havent been able to find the build sheet but it did have all of the SS equipmet when i bought it. The 454 that blew was a 73 block. However there is only 38K original on it. 0 -
Pics show shattered crank. Look carefully. And it's a CAST crank. I surely hope your new crate engine has a forged crank, if you plan on smokin'. Best, Joe 0 -
Yes, the 502 has a forged steel crank and 4 bolt mains 0 -
Im interested.[8D][8D][:p][:p][;)][;)] 0 -
Update.......................

I should have all of the interior back together in the next couple of weeks. I have to go into the dash to change the speedometer, and switch out the steering column as well. I will update in a few weeks.......0 -
UPDATE>.............
Before....
After.....
Trans is now installed, floor pans painted, I just have to clean everything up and install the new interior....

There's a cool option that I've never seen!
A manual with an optional column shifter![:o)]
Ben0 -
Yep, ben's right. You're going to have to get a steering column now!
And no factory tach in the new gauges?0 -
That's the problem with those cast cranks, they just don't hold up. The 2 bolt main doesn't help either! Forged crank is the only way to go!!!!!!!! 0 -
I already have a restored tilt column for it, and with the engine/trans/ and other interior parts and the $$$ building I am going to stick with the 5" monster tach and shift light. 0 -
Great looking rebuild! Should be super nice!!!!
At least it's not a Taurus. [:o)]0 -
Its looking good man, Be sure to show pics with everything finished[:)] 0 -
need to get rid of that awful tunnel ram

[:D]
yeah its not the greatest for performance..........0 -
Who did the machine work on you last engine? There is some nasty garbage left by whomever balanced that engine....as in a ton of garbage that should NEVER be left in an engine. (look at the slag left on the road caps and the slag left on the bottom of the wrist pin pads)
Why were the rod bolts/nuts used more than once?
Cast crank is perfect...if naturally aspirated and no NOS....and under 6200 rpms.0 -
I very crappy machine shop called ateco in waukegan Illinois. That motor had less than 8,000 miles on it. 0 -
Go to Speed Performance in Wauconda, Illinos, that's who's done all my motors for the past 25 years! A family owned business and awesome quality! 0 -
That is SOOOO much work. Best of luck and try to keep all the knuckle skin intact.[:D]
Clouder..0 -

Yeah, the Yank's do great work, they did my heads once and do great work. This time I think I am just going to do a crate engine. They will probably do my brothers 340 for his Demon.0 -
*********UPDATE***********
It has been awhile so I thought I would bring you guys up to speed. I finally decided against a ZZ502 crate because of multiple instances I have read about that state the advertised horsepower/torque numbers are not accurate. Not to mention they are essentially and assembly line motor. I was ablt to score this original bore 1972 454 complete carb to pan with all of the extras for $400 which if you dont know is cheap as ****. Most complete blocks that are already .30 over go for $600-1000. Here is what she looked like last week when I picked her up.
I met up with the machine shop yesterday and came up with a plan. The block is going to be converted to 4 bolt splayed main caps, and a 4.250 forged steel stroker crank, pistons, and Manley aluminum I beam rods. It will be bored .30 over and I ordered a set of new cast iron heads for it that will flow as well as the aftermarket aluminums and keep a stock look. Basically when it is all balanced and blueprinted it will be dyno tuned. We are shooting for 500 HP at the rear wheels and a final displacement of 489.
Here is a picture of all of the corn kernals that fell out of the exhaust manifolds, I guess a mouse had made the engine his home.
Here is a picture of it today getting ready to be pressure tested after being hot tanked.
Sorry about the ancient post resurrection but things have not been going on for awhile. This thread should get a lot more action within the next couple of weeks.

Defintely keep the updates coming.
My dad and I built a 495hp 478lb-tq Mustang in high school. She's been together for 2 years now. I still take pride in the fact that I was 16 and built the top end of that motor.
That Chevelle will be a BEAST!!!!!!0
