City Folk Suck
Living in the country is nice except when city folks move in.
My shop in in the county. I live behind my shop. Behind my fenced in acre is a 50 unit trailer park. I have a 10 foot holly hedge along the fence row.
Last month a 25 foot travel trailer takes up spot one just over the fence. A sat dish, gas grill, and bench swing appear in the lot.
I shoot in the yard to test fire, target practice, whatever, it's the county and legal. Fired a couple of rounds in the afternoon and next morning a deputy comes by with a complaint of shooting. He told them it was legal and just wanted me to know.
I drive back in the park and knock on Mr. Gasgrills door. "You the fella that called the cops about me shooting?" He stutters an afirmative.
I proceed to tell him I've been shooting here 15 years and have yet to kill anyone in the park. If he has a problem, come see me.
Today, he stopped by and told me my dog's barking bothers them. "Welcome to the country pal" "Did you enjoy living where you were before you moved here?" "Move back".
"I will be here long after you're not"
Nothing worse than morons for neighbors.

I've had morons for neighbors, and I'll be damned if you aren't correct.
We'll be moving to the country sometime in the near future. As soon as we get this damn house ready for the market.
We grew up in a rural subdivision about 10-15min outside of town. We(our gang) could run whereever we wanted. Everyone's parents owned property and we ran everywhere.
I can't wait to live on some acreage again.0 -

I remember when I was a kid, my dad lived out on his ranch of 220 acres. My fondest memories were learning to hunt, shoot, and fish out there, plus other facts about life. 10 - 12 years later, what used to be our ranch is now a strip mall and a housing community[V] 0 -

I just got new nieghbors myself.
Yesterday I went out front (they were working near the road on something) to introduce myself just to be nieghborly and was met with a pretty stuck up atitude.
Although I did warn them that if they heard gun fire that it was probly just me out in my back yard shooting and they did not seem to be bothered by the idea of that.
But I'm sure I will get some complaints about my dogs as they do bark alot at the squirils and cats roaming around.
Oh well I did my part to be friendly so now the ball is in there court.0 -
Enjoy it while you can ... then learn to "love thy neighbor" [:p][}:)][;)].
Perhaps next time you can give them a heads up until they get use to it ... better yet invite them to do some shooting [^].0 -
When I was a kid, we lived in a small town of just a few hundred until I was about 6 then we moved to the "big city" (about 70,000 then), and where I still live.
Our brand new house was in the flight path of a Military air base ... only about a mile away. It took me a while, but I got to where I never even noticed the big plane's coming in to land ... they never even woke me up.
When I was about 10 Dad got "into" real estate and fixing up older houses. We moved again, this house was just 6 blocks from a major hospital and on a main street ... it took a while but I got used to the ambulances screaming by at all times of the day and night.
When I was about 14, Dad bought another house right across the street from the same hospital ... the quiet was deafening because the ambulance would shut down their siren about 1/2 a block away ... then around 1971 or so the hospital started an air-lift service and put in a helicopter landing pad, just on the other side of the 2 lane street from our house. Now that was noisy!
People adapt, give them time ... and if it helps, relate a little story to them ... show them what country charm is all about ... introduce them to shooting, they might turn into great customers [:)]0 -

Sort of hte same here. I'm in the country and have nieghbors building right next to me. literally, the shop is like 10 feet off the property line, anyway I went to meet them at the road one day and all they wanted to know was, in an english accent, "can you smell that farm there?" [:D], I don't notice it. Dad's is on the west side, he owns a rodeo company so he has steers, bulls, horses, and a few goats for the kids. Cant wait for the summer heat and southwest winds[:D]0 -

grew up in the ozarks lived in seculsion half of my life. when i moved here it wasn't too bad , closer to work, farms all around, still had that home feeling. now as folks are dying off their children are selling the large tracts of land to developers, houses are building up everywhere,people all in a mad rush, insane. ten more years i'll retire, then i'm going home to the sticks, wished i'd never left.[V] 0 -

If I were that trailer guy and heard you shooting I would invite you over for a BBQ and ask to see your guns. I'm really good at BBQ'n so I know you would love it. Then after we checked out each others guns I would ask if I could join you shooting sometime?
It's just the way I am, ask my neighbors. But I can't shoot on my property cause I live in the city therefore have to be one of those city folks that "suck" I guess.0 -

Then I could go say hi to my city folk friend and perhaps give him a few pointers on the "how too's" of BBQ'n. Then I could cook all you guys some lunch after we fire off several hundred rounds. Can I bring a smith 500 and my semi-auto 30-06?0 -
Interesting how that works! I have been a member of several gun ranges that were out in the country when I joined. Before you knew it there were houses surounding the range and all of them complaining about the noise and danger.
Problem is they will prevail over time and shut you down! Ranges were closed over time and had to move out further into the country.
When country becomes city, rezoning happens and its all over.0 -

It's still country, but disappearing pretty fast. The highway (State Hwy 59) in front goes from I-65 to Gulf Shores and I have forest on one side, cleared land on the other. When the land can go for $500 G's I'm going to move.[;)]0 -
The log cabin I live in I built in the middle of 49 acres of North Carolina mountaintop. The closest house I can see is 2 miles away across the French Broad River. I like privacy. 0 -
