I just purchased a Bersa Thunder .380 for 119.00 about a month ago from a local Gander Mountain. They were selling it as a used gun, but it was very obvious that the gun had never been fired, the magazine and manuals were still sealed in their packages. I cannot say enough about this as a good little gun. Shoots everytime, no matter what you feed it. They used to be commonplace new around me for 189.99, but now the going price seems to be about 239.99 most places. If you want really cheap you can go with a hi-point. They go on sale around me for 84.99 almost every other month. A buddy of mine has one and they seem to fire ball ammo just fine, but they really have a great dislike for hollowpoints. While accurate and fun for the price, I would not reccomend it as a defense gun.

I second the Bersa. I had one but sold it to my 69 year old mother who likes it.

The Keltec is not a fun range gun at all. It is not enjoyable to shoot. The Bersa can be shot all day at the range, comes at a decent price, and it made well.

Bersas are good, but on a budget, I would still with 9mm, much cheaper to shoot.
I would try to find a used glock or smith trade-in
    or a model 10 smith .38

    .380 costs more!

I would rather have a 9mm too - but he asked about a 380. I'd pick a Bersa 380 or Beretta Cheetah over the Keltec 380. Although, I like my Keltec 32. That's not punishing to shoot.

+1. 9x18MM is more powerfull than a .380 . Comparable size. Cheap ammo. VERY reliable. Mine has never jammed. And you can still get a Bulgarian for about $200.

How cheap do you want to go? Hi-point has then for about $100.

Another plug for the Russian IJ-70 (Makarov). They're recent manufacture and are .380 caliber. About $180-$200.

BTW, 9mm x 18 and .380 have almost identical ballistics.

Taurus has a couple of pretty reasonable (maybe not "cheap") 380s. Don't know much about them, but I'm pretty happy with my Taurus for the price.
