Bersa! They are dependable and can be gotten in the $200-$300 range!

    Kel-Tec or Beretta or Walther.

Bersa makes a great 380 for about 250.00

i know you didn't ask, but a small revolver would do the job and could pack more punch than a 380

i say keltec for an auto if thats what you want

Good advice from everyone. What revolver (caliber, size and model) would you recommend?

$300 you can get a used 9mm if you have to have a semi auto. Or better yet a used .38 special and not worry about reliability.

Who makes a small, reliable and, yes, affordable 9mm? Bersa? Thanks again.

Bersa, and look at the various Makarovs and copies thereof, and then the used market of course. If you are just asking about home defense, $200 can get you a like new (or actually new) pump shotgun...

Try a Star model B You can't beat it for $200. 1911 copy, single action 9mm. Very accurate and very dependable.

Look into a revolver in 38 Special. I took a quick glance over at the auction side, and there's a number that'll do what you're looking to do for under $200.

If you have five kids in the house I would suggest you buy a good used revolver or pistol for a couple of hundred dollars and a $100 Homck or Stack-On metal safe to lock it up! You can access them pretty quick if need be and they will keep the children safe.

Guns in the home unlocked with children are a accident waiting to happen.

For the money Keltec. Most other good .380's are out of the Keltecs price range.

I have owned and shot both the Bersa and Keltec and the Bersa functioned better, less felt recoil, and was more reliable.
I know a lot of people like the Keltecs but From what I have seen of them and my experience as an owner of one I was not impressed.
On the other hand some people who own them swear they are great guns.

9mm ammo is cheaper than 380 ammo. My last used Glock 17 I bought I paid $350 OTD.

This guy usually has some deals on Glocks and Smith & Wesson 9mm's.

Charter Arms 38spl should be about $170 for a good used one and the Bersa has a few more safety features than a Kel-tec so I like it better in the situation you are in....but you will get in a store....handle a few....and forget everything you read just now.

I bought my used AMT 380. for $150.
Check pawn shops in your area for used guns, sometimes you get a good gun at a great price.

Or, get a SKYY Industries 10+1 9mm. Weighs only 17 oz. for $299.99. Great little pistols made in America!

quote:Consider the following when you post answers:

    1) Have five kids
    2) Live in a lower middle class neighborhood
    3) Not likely ot see a raise in the next five years
    4) Well grounded and knows his limits(not seen often in these parts, good for you and good luck).

I appreciate your advice. Thanks again

I addded one for you. Kel-Tec!

Bersa is a good choice or several surplus guns in the 2-300 range or a PA63 (9mm Makarov) can be had for around $150 and ammo is decent priced too.
