just a little more info, i joined in Aug. 1955, went to boot camp at NTC Bainbridge Md. first duty station was NATC Patuxent River Md., Electronics test, i was very fortunate as i was "assigned" OJT, that OJT earned me a set of crew member wings, i was in the first group of ADs (Aviation Machinist Mate) to be designated ADJ (Aviation Machinist Mate Jet) in my two years stationed there i was plane captain for Scott Carpenter, Alan Shepard, i met John Glenn after his historic cross country flight in an F8U Crusader.
i flew in many Aircraft while there, one most signifigant was the R3Y Tradewind, i also helped in launching her and beaching her, the others were P5M, A3D, F3D, F9F-8T, TV-2, T2V-1, AD Skyraider (the "Guppy" version) "Willy Victor-2", ( F9F-8T, TV-2, T2V-1, these three i actuallY learned to fly, pilots were not as tight a$$ed back then some considered you an equal [:D]) while in VF-121 & VF-114 i flew back seat in Phantoms and been MACH II.
i just wish i could do it all over once more, my Navy experience was most gratifying and enjoyable untill "Peanuts" Carter started destroying the military.
i also have some good old "McHales Navy" type stories that by todays standards would have landed me in the Brig [:D]

Welcome. Your post was interesting to me because my dad started to serve the same time you did, and was also on the USS Randolph. He wasn't in as long as you. I think he finished his service as chief mechanic on Rear Admiral Moore's Super Constellation in Keflevic(sp)Iceland in the early/mid 60's. Thanks for your service and glad to have you aboard. 0 -

Welcome! My cousin Brad was one of the 3 EA-6 jet jockeys that died in the line of duty during the "Iran hostage Rescue attempt" while on CVA-63.

The P5M you mentioned is one of the few historic aircraft I would have loved to crew on. The JASDF base in Misawa had one up until the middle eighties and it was the only one I ever saw still in use.

oooooooooh have i got a great story about the Admiral, the "Randoo Candoo" was replenishing during some very rough weather just a few day prior to Thanksgiving, getting us our turkey was a priority for the Adm., during a high line transfer of goodies, the ships rolled away from each other, the lines went taught and spilled abt. 3/4 of the nets contents into the Med. Sea, there was only one case of Tuna made it on deck, a BMC told one of our guys on the rep.crew, "take this directly to the Adms. cabin", our "line shack" (is the plane captains hang out) was directly outboard the Adms. cabin, that case of tuna some how ended up in our line shack [;)] a few weeks later during a stand down day we opened three cans of tuna (these cans were not your common grocery store cans) got some mayo, relish, onions and bread from the galley (five finger discount [;)]) made up a huge batch of tuna salad the hatch (door) was open and the odor of tuna salad must have circulated past the Adms. nostrils, we suddenly heard "ATTENTION ON DECK", in stepped the Adm., "i thought i smelled tuna salad, mind if i join you guys", (he loved tuna salad) of course there was no objections, "you folks are very resourcefull, he commented, i had heard there was tuna on the ship but no one knows where it is, i am certain it was a Christmas gift from home", we all thought our A$$'s were headed for the brig, but for the next 3 hours we BS'ed and listened to "Sea Stories" that could only come from a man of his experience. on his way out, he said, "better throw those empty cans under the bench overboard before the M.A. comes around"0 -

Airdale, you reminded me of an UNREP we had when I was a Gunboat Rider. When we got almost within shot line range of the AOE, they broke out a banner that said "PG PICK UP SEA PAINTER HERE". Our captain was in the pilot house, and he didn't laugh. He wasn't about to let an insult and implication that a Patrol Gunboat wasn't a "real ship" go unanswered.
We had a First Class Engineman who was a real smart-ass, and always had a quick answer for everything. The captain got on the 1MC and passed the word for the EN1 to lay to the pilothouse. He told the EN1 to ask the Senior Chief to cover his fueling station and he wanted him to find a clean bed sheet and some black paint and make up a reply to the AOE banner.
After the break away and salutes, the captain went down to the main deck to see what was on our banner. It said "NO NEED TO PUMP, THIS THING SUCKS!"
The captain just shook his head, looked at the EN1 and said "That's not exactly what I had in mind."0 -
