Dealer Requirements for a Transfer
I had a pistol transfered to a local from an out of state seller. The seller was going to send it through a local FFL but shipped directly instead. My dealer doesn't have a problem receiving the item directly but does want the seller to fax a copy of his photo ID. The seller is dragging his feet and says this is not a legal requirement and is unusual.
Is this an unusual expectation?

No it is not unusual. FFL wants to record his ID in the blackbook. I always send a copy of my drivers license to a FFL on transfer regardless what kind of firearm it is.. long gun or pistol. 0 -

IF you bought it thru GB take a copy of the Sellers address registered on here to your FFL. There should also be a return address on the package. 0 -

It did not seem unusual to me but this is th first such transfere I have done.
It has been two weeks since the pistol arrived at the dealer. It was purchased here on gunbroker. the seller claims to have tried once to fax his ID but said the line was busy. My next question is what I should do if the seller fails to do this?

Ask the seller drop a copy in the snail mail, or scan it and e-mail it, I send the sellers a e-mail with my requirements for transfers with my information. 1 being a copy of a photo ID, the other being a bill of sale or invoice.

Your between a rock and a hardplace. Photo ID is not a requirement to record in the book. Your FFL has an address to put in his book. See if the seller will send a copy of his drivers license to another fax number. I thought there was a time frame of getting the gun in the recorded book. Someone else help out here... two weeks since the gun has been to your dealer is a little excessive.. 0 -

The dealer is protecting himself the best he knows how. Many dealers
won't receive a firearm from a nonFFL at all. This is something you work out before you make a buy, not after.0 -

Ask your dealer if he would be ok with the ID "number" being blacked out, your seller might be more comfortable with sending a copy just showing photo & address.

A dealer is required to have the seller's address...OR...ID# according to the log book. If I were a buyer and stuck in a hard place because of an IDIOT seller that refuses to provide an ID. I would politely try to get the transfer dealer to realize he can log this gun into his books and only use the seller's address. You can make a copy of every bit of info regarding the sale. Print out the entire auction....including the buyer and seller's contact page. Tell your dealer that he can keep these records as the "log in" information so all his bases will be covered. Dealers aren't the problem here.....remember what happens when a minor mistake is made and you will be very sympathetic to their apprehentions. 0 -

I have had transfers come in where all I had was the return address on the box,[:0] that is why I request the info I do in advance, and I don't rely on the buyer to request it.

MAIL the seller a stamped envelope with the address of your transfer FFL, ask him to put a xerox of his ID in and mail it to your FFL. 0 -

I've changed my mind... Screw the guy.. Call up your Sheriff's Dept. or Police and have them meet you at the FFL. Take your information and let the Cops write a report if the FFL won't give you your gun. Have them call BATFE or you can on the cell phone. Have the phone number ready. I bet you get you gun ASAP. 0 -

hey genius... here in FL we not only have to get a photo ID but also a fingerprint... different states/counties/cities have different requirements from federal law.0 -

Name and address or FFL number is required to be logged.
How does the transfer dealer know who sent the firearm unless he has a photo copy of a government ID like a license?
The sender can write any name and address for the return address.0 -

And I bet the cops will tell you it is a civil matter, if not, then they would confiscate the firearm as evidence, if they did not, then I would drive the box over to the local BATFE office and turn it into them, with a explanation that the seller / shipper refused to identify himself. Then the buyer can have fun ever seeing his gun.

Correct. I have bought firearms thru a FFL and NEVER had a drivers license of the seller. Of course these were internet purchases. FFL is just being a prick. BTW what is the time frame for the dealer to record it in the book?0 -
