Do you feel that your CCW has adequate firepower?
I carried my PPKS for a long time (still do from time to time); but, just kept feeling that the 380 was just not powerful enough. I'm well aware that with good placement practically any caliber will "put you down". I've started carrying my S&W model 60 (357) or my S&W model 36.
I probably would carry my 40cal or my 9mm if their weight was not an issue.
With crime the way it is, do you feel your CCW has adequate firepower?

In the summer I may drop down to a .38 when I am wearing shorts and a T-shirt.0 -

I just carry a P3AT(and extra mag), and figure with the bark it has..the threat will be beatin feet the opposite direction as if it was a 500.[:D] 0 -

I'm a little guy and can't carry any sizable piece in warm weather without looking like Eastwood! The last 3 years I carried a Kel-Tec P-32. This year I bought a Kel-Tec single stack 9. 0 -

"Firepower" measured in terms of caliber or capacity may sometimes become a secondary issue. Other factors must also be taken into consideration. Do you in your particular set of circumstances feel comfortable enough to carry your piece 24/7?
I choose to leave my S&W 629 in .44 Magnum in my dresser, and pick - depending on the mood of the day - mostly Seecamp LWS .32 ACP, but also S&W 686 in .357, S&W 340 in .357, Kimber Ultra CDP in .45 ACP, and even NAA Mini in .22 magnum.
Choose to carry daily.

I think the more pertinent question is do you feel your skills are up to the task.
One of the best quotes I've heard came from a Navy SEAL Mst Sgt, it goes something like this "Sure it's only a 9mm, but when I put 2 in your heart and one in your head you won't know the difference"0 -

yes I think it has adequate firepower. the ammo I use has around 520 ft-lb energy, which is as much as the top .357 but it's .40 cal. the way I figure it, that adds up to better than a .45.
lighter bullets= less penetration but more whack. I think that's more important. it's better to knock them on their ass than make them bleed I think.
9 rounds, 2 mags. should be enough to get me out of trouble.0 -

This is sure to start an argument, but a bullet from anything short of a 50cal just isn't going to knock you down. Perhaps the perp will fall down from the shock or the pain, but there is not enough energy packed in the bullet to physically knock someone off their feet.0 -

If I did not feel it was adequate I would not carry it.

Not really. I've a choice but have been carrying a P3AT around since they came out. It's the lightest 380 out there and the heaviest pocket pistol I'd care to carry around in light clothing w/o a jacket. It's loaded with hot Santa Barbara ammo.
I've handled the single stack Keltec 9mm which seems like a good ides but is 50% heavier.
The PPKS is too heavy for what it is.
I sold a NAA 22LR with folding grip because it's too slow to get into action.
With cooler weather here now I really should be carrying something
more serious in a belt holster.0 -
Whenever I'm in the states, I live in El Paso, so what I carry depends on the time of year.
In winter, I can carry a full size handgun (I used to carry an S&W 1911, but I changed to an HK45 just recently), a backup (Kel-Tec PF9), and a knife (Dark Ops E&E Interceptor) all without any obvious indication that I'm carrying at all.
In summertime, I'm limited to the likes of NAA mini-revolvers and derringers for the most part, just because it gets too darned hot to wear the clothing to conceal larger weapons without making yourself too dizzy to shoot straight anyway.0 -
I carry every day, no exceptions.
My minimum is a 2" S&W .38 with 2 speed strips. Normally and since I bought it, i've been carrying my Para Ordinance LDA "Carry" in .45. Very small package for a 1911 style .45. Sometimes i'll carry my Kimber Ultra Carry II.
Once jacket weather hits, it is a 1911 whether a 3", 4" or fullsize, every day.
So in answer, yes, I feel that when I carry concealed that I have adequate firepower for "most" circumstances.0 -
I don't have a CCW. When and if I get around to getting one, I'll probably carry a .38 snubnose. I'm very comfortable with that. If someone is bad ass enough to take 5 shots of .38 to the chest cavity I don't know who he is.
Consider, a .22, if you fire a few rounds is the same effect as buckshot from a 12 ga. Everyone should carry what they are comfortable with, but I think the whole 'caliber inadequacy' thing is overrated. Anything short of a 12 ga at point blank range cannot be guaranteed to kill someone absolutely instantly if they are hopped up on drugs and that being the case, I'll take something that is both easy to conceal and light enough to wear regularly- and doesn't kick too hard like a very small frame .45 would.0
