I have been watching, with great interest, the posts regarding what you carry?... what is under your pillow?... what is stashed around your house to keep the bad guys away? After reading the posts, I am now, very afraid of moving anywhere near where these posters live.[V]
You must live in an unimaginable crappy, dangerous place. Or..Is there a "fraidy cat" factor involved? Or...is there a poulation of "wanna be cowboys" out there? I am curious.[?]
BTW, I have lived in Oakland, CA, Vallejo, CA, and Washington, DC just to name a few places that may not be the "azzhole of the world", but you can see it from there. I am amazed that I survived.

I don't think it is a "fraidy cat factor" just overly catious. But what is overlly catious? Is that possible? As many freaks as there are out there I don't think that is possible. And not wanting to move near some of us. Just remember, you watch my back and I watch yours! But yeah, some of us(including me) get a little carried away with what we carry!HEhehe[:D]0 -
If given an option to carry I would. Even if I lived in Mr. Rodger's neighborhood. Not that I carry much money just the fact I'd like to keep what is mine. Then have the option to protect it while I'm out and about and not become a victim. 0 -

It's called being prepared...I live in Idaho too. Do you think you could live with yourself if you got caught up in an armed robbery and someone shot and killed your family...but you might have been able to save their lives had you been armed...It's about being prepared. In Idaho, we have far less to worry about (compared to where I come from, DC Metro area), but that is largely b/c just about everyone in Idaho is armed. 0 -

I would gather it goes to this:
When I lived in Ohio, when the CCW came about, I applied. You HAD to take an NRA handgun coarse. The instructers told me this: IF/WHEN you must shoot, YOUR life endangered. You are NOT shooting to WOUND, you ARE eliminating the THREAT. ALLWAYS double tap, EMPTY the mag IF you can. Would you throw stones OR carry the MOST effective weapon you can? The answer is obvious.
The pistol/rifle/shotgun IS a tool. You don't use a hammer to install drywall screws or bolts in an engine block.
As was previously stated, there are alot of loonies out there that WILL harm you if given the chance. If you knew where they were going to be, you most likely would avoid that place. However, they seem to pop up in places you would not expect. Like perhaps your home, the gas station, or ANYWHERE in between.0 -

I do think one needs to lean on Common Sense when it comes to concealed carry and self protection. I suppose we each have a different definition of Common Sense, but for me it prevents Paranoid behavior. 0 -

In Cleveland there has been a murder a day. Three block over there was a home invasion. 2 people killed. I have been attacked twice. I carry for two reasons; 1) protect my family 2) fight against the bad guys. The more people that carry the less likely the scumbags will assume an easy attack. Would move BUT we have five kids and can't afford a house in the burbs. 0 -

Eric, I totally agree with you in principle. I'm an Idaho native and you're right about the populace being armed. Maybe not so much "carry concealed" on ones' person, but I do think lots of rigs have a gun on the floor, etc. One of the points I will make is that guns are tools, not toys. That is one major distinction that is not always made.

Same thing gives me thought from time to time.
I'm 69 years old, have never been robbed, mugged, or frowned at..I have a carry permit, but more times than not I forget to take a gun when I go out. Don't mean much, I expect to forget my pants about any time.
But...I am well known in the area as a gun person, and I have the rep of shooting asses if bothered, in spite of never shooting anybody. at least not more than a little bit.So maybe that helps.
As we all know of course, it only takes one time to end your life, so being prepared is something I can't argue with, even if I'm not prepared myself. I do at least carry when I do my banking, use an ATM etc.
Some people are really scared and carry a gun even to go to the bathroom, others aren't scared of anything on earth but like to play "cowboy." You name the level, I expect you'll find someone here who fits it.0 -
I believe in being prepared, but even though I have a carry/conceal license I only carry when I feel I need to, which is very seldom. Sure, danger is unpredictable and can confront you at any time, but I just don't believe I need a concealed handgun while worshiping in Church! If I have a brain dysfunction and go for a burger at Bubba's Biker Bar[:D], perhaps it would be prudent to carry! Also, I don't carry while walking around inside my home!
It's a personal choice and I guess folks just have to be comfortable in their surroundings no matter how unfounded their perception of danger or need for protection, so as long as they practice safe gun handling who cares. However, if I went to someone's home and saw guns readily available in every nook, cranny, and corner I'd probably politely excuse myself and wonder about their stability!0 -
Neither a cowboy, nor a fraidy cat. Just want to feel secure anywhere I find myself, and with the gun along, I have no fear. Wife is the same - she carries the S&W 640, a light and a Cell-Phone.
Oakland/Richmond are pretty rough areas - I used to have to get off Tankers there, and haul my gear a mile or so till I could get a Taxi, in the dark of the night, with my whole payoff in my pockets, maybe $30,000 cash. I started carrying way back then, and I didn't bother with a permit. Carrying became a habit, and I just don't feel dressed when I am going out, unless my piece is close at hand.
Nearly 40 years on, it is just a routine. Since I have been carrying, I have never had to clear leather - hope I never have to.0 -
What has worked well for us is this:
The first day we move into a new house/neighborhood my wife discretely tells a couple of neighbors that I served time for shooting a neighbor that pizzed me off and that I had only been "on the street" for a couple of weeks. Works good[:D][:D][:D]

Not knowing what particular posts you refer to, or if your comment is a "generalization", I simpy say to you that there is a little thing called "preparedness" which many Americans ascribe to.
Your view of "cowboys", "fraidy cats", or your seemingly liberal fear of being near gun-bearing citizens, seems mildly disturbing to me.
You probably should move to Kali again, or maybe Chicago or NY City. You'd probably feel more comfortable there.[;)]

Just to shine a little light, I was an LEO in Alaska. I am not against anyone owning guns. I grew up on a ranch and rode pro rodeo for several years and I don't even come close to being a liberal.
I am concerned about getting shot by some dumb snit who has watched too much TV and feels he has to arm himself to the hilt.

In the last 3 months TWO people have been robbed that are in the same market as me.

For some, what is stashed around the house, isn't to keep "the bad guys" away as much as it is for the critters. When you have seen bears from every window in your house, had them "on" the house, and the deck. Have them walk around a corner, not more than 10-12 feet away, when you are having a BBQ, I worry more about the critters than bad guys.
I never worried much about the bad guys around here. I didn't even have a lock on my shop, or my shed, until this year. Only now, because boys will be boys, and we had a couple of young ones move in down the road from us. (ages 10-13 or so) Boys will wander around the mountains when playing outside, and a padlock will just keep them honest.
As for carry, better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. I was a Boy Scout, were you?0 -
