COLT or KIMBER
When Kimber or Colt can start selling me a gun for the price of my RIA's (of which I have 6 of and I personally feel they are of the same quality) I'll start buying them![;)]
Jacob, Look around for a good used RIA!
I am sure that the gun in your picture is good as well, but there is nothing like a good ol 1911![;)][:D]0 -
That is a good pistol, and usually very attractively priced.
However, at 15, for just knocking around at the farm, why not get a good .22 pistol? That's what I had at your age, and loved it. I could shoot all day for about $10.0 -

+1. Browning Buckmarks are excellent .22 pistols for a fairly reasonable price. Get a small caliber pistol like a .22 so you can work on the fundimentals of pistol shooting. You won't have to battle the weight or the heavier recoil of the bigger calibers with a .22, so you can make every shot as if it's your first.
Once you get the fundimentals down, then go for tightening your shot groups. I know people in there 50s and 60s who comp shoot .22 pistols and can put 10 rounds in a 2 inch circle at 50 feet.
When you can do that, THEN get a bigger caliber.0 -
Yeah. I was looking at AIMSurplus.com at them, for 150.00 there, you can a makarov, but my shop has them for around 100.00.
Dad has a little .22 revolver, but id like to move it up a little.
GIT:
As a matter of fact, Dad WANTS to trade his .45 in for a RIA. The shop has some REALLY nice ones, and he likes the way they hold better than his.
Thanks0 -
what kind of 45 does your dad have? 0 -

Not exactly sure.
1911 of some kind i believe, but thats not enough to do justice. Ill have to ask him when he gets home, he MIGHT come home for lunch break, hes working in town today and its STEAMING hot0 -
The PA-63 is a very good little pistol. Makarov.com has LOTS of extras for them as well!
As for the GET A KIMBER!!! crowd... please. I am SEVERLY unimpressed with Kimber. They feel clunky, like a pistol made out of legos.
I have all the same upgrades available on a Kimber on my Taurus PT1911, and I got it for UNDER $500. It shoots like a dream, hits ANYTHING I aim at and never jams. Why would I blow my money on overpriced, over hyped status symbol that is pimped out like a $20 prostitute by every gun rag? And no, it's not because they are 'OMG AWESOME!!', it's because Kimber buys so much advertising from the magazines themselves.
If they came down in price to what they are ACTUALLY worth, then I'd think about it.
Actually thinking about picking up an RIA for a true Mil-Spec piece.0 -
I've got the '63 and five Maks - BUT - I think Nunn's got it right.
Can't beat a good .22 LR pistol - especially in the semi-auto flavor!
You can afford to shoot a .22 all day long and go out again tomorrow!
My favorites are a HS Victor and a Ruger MkIII Hunter. I also have the Mk. I
and II's - they are just as much fun and very affordable for a young guy
just starting out!

Yeah. If I end up buying a .22 ill get a Ruger Mk. II Bull barrel, probably.0 -
I have one of those PA63's. Good little gun. It's got a little recoil and bites your a little. I too would recommend you get a 22 pistol. Can do alot more shooting. 0 -
That's a good choice - it's a bit heavy for the field but the neat thing
about Rugers are that they are 'natural pointers' like the P08 Lugers,
with the same fine balance.
Come to think of it, the Mki was MY first pistol - used in about 1960.
It's the only gun that I just plain wore out but it took me about 45 years!0 -

Yeah, Ill think about it, its no FINAL decision wrote on paper yet, were just kinda looking around, and i seen I can get that one for 100$ +/- a little, and ammo is about 6.50 /50 rds,
EDIT: Russian 1895 Nagant Revolver in 7.62 is what i WAS looking at, but I think that might be a hefty little ammo bill.
So, Might get a ruger mkII, might get that mak, or hey, i might say whatever and just get an m44 from downstairs (dad has one for each of us) and see if i cant find a little pistola at the shop.
Thanks!0 -
whats a IRA thing??????? is that a pistol,Rifle, shot gun or a good revolver????? 0 -
IF you can ... DO ... get a Mak. It's a wonderfully reliable little gun that
had a pretty potent (tried and true) round. I've got an E. Ger., sneak Russian,
one 'regular' Russian (non-sneak), two Bulgies (one's the beautiful and slick
MilTex) and a Chinese.
Love them all!

Chuck - RIA = Rock Island Armory 1911. Best deal going in town, even better deal if you want to get into the 1911 game...
Jacob - one more vote for the 22... you'll be able to shoot it a LOT more, which will make you better. Then start saving your pennies for a 1911...

Had I not committed to buy U.S. made where a like product was offered, I would have seriously considered the PT1911. It does look and feel like a well-made pistol.
That being said, I love the feel and quality of my SW1911 and the Kimber Pro and Ultra Carry. The little extra money is worth it, IMO.
The bottom line is that it costs more to manufacture in the U.S. than it does in Brazil, the Philippines, or Eastern Europe. We all have to decide for ourselves how much of a priority we put on supporting U.S. manufacturing.
BTW, when Taurus finally release the 24/7 OSS DS, I will be first in line. The Decocker Safety and the accompanying DA/SA operation seems to pretty much offer everything anyone could possible want in a semi-auto pistol.0 -
RIAs are made in the Philippines, and, IMHO, are junk. A Ruger is a far better weapon for about the same money, and is backed with great customer service.

RIA's are far from junk! I have 6 of them and all have been great right from the box!
Thier customer service is also great! Read my other post about my first ever RIA problem! They are handleing it very quickly with no questions asked!
I personally have found that those who say RIA's are junk have never owned one and usually have never shot one![;)]0 -

Jacob,
I agree with the members suggesting you buy a .22 pistol, like the Ruger or Browning and some extra mags.
If you really want a 9x18, I suggest this one. Only a few bucks more and is a C&R. This is a C&P from the site you referenced in one of your posts. SOG has them for $199. Note you get 12+1 round capacity.
The Nagant is costly to feed and slow to load and unload.
You can buy Russian mil-surp rounds at SOG, $14.99/40.
Once these are gone, expect to pay +/- $25 for 50rds.
