Silly me. When our vehicle was wrecked--nearly costing the lives of my wife and daughters [:(]--we were thankful that some enterprising corporation out there offered rental cars so that we weren't put on foot while the family ride was repaired. We never once considered abusing it--jumping curbs, burning the tires, slamming into bridge abutments on purpose--we just drove it like it was ours so that the next person having to rent it would be given a reliable ride, too.

Had we known the apparently common practice...nah, we'd still have done right by the rental folks. They have to make a living, too.[^]

I used to live in Hawaii. It was well known that people did some pretty brutal things to rental cares, lol. The company doesnt seem to care too much

Neat pic though. Something to save and show your kids when they're learning how to drive.[;)]

No car beat like a rental, love to pound them and flat spot the tires before taking them back.

Yeah I used to always pretend I was Bo Duke and jump the rental car over rivers, trains, cop cars, etc. Never found one with a horn that played Dixie though.

The mechanical prowess of rental cars and amazing ability to perform feats that would make the design engineer blanch is well known.

I have had occasion to test a few in my younger days.

Cool pic, but I'm with Ram on this one. Every rental I have had was treated as if it were mine. When you purposefully abuse someone else's property, that is wrong. Period. Just because you lease or rent something doesn't give you the right to abuse it. But that's just me. Guess I'm funny that way.

I am not old, but it would never occur to me to abuse a rental

And with a rental, you don't EVER have to check the oil!!!!

Anymore the rental cars have electronic gadjets in them that will limit RPM and top speed, and record and report RPM, MPH, and location. Drive it contrary to the contract you signed, and they will slap a fine on you.

You mean to tell me that BIG BROTHER REALLY IS WATCHING?

It never crossed my mind to do that to anything that belonged to someone else.

Oh... and you might be surprised at what "Design Engineers" do out on the test track. A group of our young bucks managed to rip the entire exhaust system off of a Charger SRT8 during a "Ride and Drive". Seems we had built is a bit too much jounce into the suspension. How on earth they got it air borne to identify the problem remains a mystery.

Exactly (and, for what it is worth, my comment above was meant to be funny). I don't borrow stuff from my neighbors and treat them like crap. In fact, they get treated with better respect than I treat my own stuff. Rental cars are the same way.

I never abused a rental car that I rented. However I remember several thousand + letter carriers were unhappy on how the USPS and some company handled the bid process for vehicles to deliver the mail. I havn't seen a Chevy Vega for a long time.[8D]

I hate to preach, but I do have a strong opinion here, and I'm going to state it.
Doing damage to someone else' property is larceny, just as it would be if you stole from them. It's exactly the same. If you purposely burn up their tires, you stole them. I hate thieves.[V][V]

When I was a lad and misbehaved, one punishment was writing the following on the blackboard (yes, they were still black) 100 times:

'Philosophers and knowledgeable people agree that a man's character is determined by his actions when no one is looking, or when he thinks no one is looking.'

(After writing something 500+ times, one tends to remember it even after 35 years.)

Treating rental cars poorly says a great deal about one's character.
Bragging about it says even more.

Once when I was staying in Honduras, my friend Jeff met this hot looking girl and couldn't get her out of his mind. She told him where she lived which was just outside a little town about twenty miles away and up in the foothills down a lane strewn with rocks the size of a helmet. (Yes, I've been there.)

jeff got soused on Salva Vida one afternoon, went down to Avis, rented a car, got halfway down the lane, heard a horrible sound under the car and it was getting dark so he walked up to her house. The next morning he looked under the car and the oil pan was completely ripped off. He called a repair shop in the little town, the mechanic said it would be days getting parts. Jeff asked him it there was any other way and the mechanic said yes. He straightened the pan as best he could, put a jack under it got it as tight as he could against the block and arc welded it back on. Added oil and away he went. I always wondered what Avis thought when they found out. That's why rental car rates are so high.

I once called my high school German teacher by her first name, and she had me write "Suzanne Diane Lafky Sojka" 1000 times. I spent about 12 hours on it and made it to about 700 times, and I guess that was enough for her because she accepted the 700 on the due date. I wonder if she realizes that even now, 20 years later, I still remember her full name.

The above was a C&P from Don McManus above..Don, that's sharp and to the point. A thief is a thief, and we seem to have some here. The very worst of it is..they are proud of being thieves.

I certainly hope I never meet any of them.

Don, are you by any chance kin to Patrick McManus who once wrote all those amusing outdoor tales? He's my hero..

Rental companys expect the cars and trucks to get beat, they have the insurance to cover it,just like huge departement stores write off shop lifting and employee theft, they have it covered, if you get caught or go overboard, well thats another thing.

A rental car will go anywhere.[:D]
