I think I found my next rifle
I've been in the market for a good lever gun for a while now and I think I found it. Marlin 1895 in 45/70 with a Lyman receiver peep sight. Yes, I do believe that would be the epitome of lever guns. (Lyman sight isn't included with the rifle, I'll have to add it)

This is, course I may be biased I own the special edition :P in 45 colt
edit: if you want 45-70 go with the 1895 cowboy, you gain a bit of weight on your choice a lot of class and a 9shot tubular mag instead of 40 -
I'm not a fan of the straight stock or octagon barrel. Whatever Marlin lever gun I get, it's going to have a peep sight. I can hit better with peeps than I can with scopes. Odd?

Try it out before you buy it, hold it that is, I had one of the other model marlins in .444 a few years back that had the stocks like that and they really went cheep on the wood, it weighted way to little and the stocks felt cheep. My father had a 40+ year old 444 from them same style but the wood was way better and gun overall was a lot heavier.
Difference being I sold my .444 because it kicked like a mule compared to my fathers, and I think the main difference was the wood everything else looked similar.0 -
My old 336 had the pistol grip and my bro had a Win 94 with a straight stock. I didn't care for how my wrist was cocked when I shouldered the straight stocked 94.
Between the 45/70, 450 Marlin, and 444 Marlin is any one of the three better choice than the others?0 -

are you reloading or buying factory, come hunting season half the time you cannot buy .444 marlin ANYWHERE
45/70 is probably the cheepest and easyest to get as goes ammo, but if you load your own those points are mute.
I don't know what bullet diamter 450 uses but if its not .452 it would be annoying to reload for because the lack of bullet choices, alot of bullets for .444 and 45/70 which is .452 450 may be .452 as well I just don't know of the top of my head.0 -
My father is getting back into reloading centerfire, so the option is there. I do prefer a round that's readily commercially available. 0 -
As I understand it, .450 Marlin is a belted .45-70; that way, there's no chance of one of the high-pressure .450 loads being used in someone's old Trapdoor Springfeild...so, it uses the same bullets as .45-70.
My buddy has a .450 Guide Gun that he took bear hunting...VERY effective round. She do buck a bit, though...0 -
That .450 Marlin Alaskan Guide gun is sweet, but has the straight stock. I think I picked up your old 336 at a gun show for $180[:D]
I still get nervous putting those sharp pointed 30-30's in the tube end to end, That's why I want to upgrade to the 45/70 or .450 someday. Their bullets are much flatter tipped and trajectory.0 -
What about the venerable 444Marlin?
Hornady has those new Leverevolution rounds for them. They're potent.0 -
As far as Peep Sights go - I'm in the same boat you are CP111.
The human eye likes to line up or center circles, which makes the peep sight idea for both target shooting and hunting (heck, shooting in general). It is also quicker to acquire a target (animal) from say high port, with peeps then a scope.
I find that after shooting for nearly 1/2 a century, scopes STILL are a pain - eye relief, set up, etc.

Had an 1895SS that I traded away and really missed. Kept my eye out for another and ran into a great deal on 1895GG. I am happy again. 45-70 is the way to go, if only for the great history. 0 -

The .450 Marlin is another answer to a question that hasn't been asked. Some may tout the power advantage of the .450 but it is no greater than the thumper rounds you can buy from Garrett for the 45/70. 0 -

I just bought a Marlin 1895 Guide gun in 45-70 as my first levergun. Now that I have it and have gotten to shoot it, you would be lucky to pry it from my dead hands. I love it! Not sure if you have held either style stock, but I disliked the straight stock at first. After holding each model I ended up going with the straight stock, I personally like it much better.

Wouldn't mind and 1895 myself but not sure if the guide gun or the one you have there is the way to go. Dont know if the shorter barrel has a big toll on accuaracy. 0 -
You lose nothing in accuracy. my 1895 gs will cloverleaf @100 yds.
45-70 is superior to 450 marlin IMHO, more vesitility, easy to find shells for, top end power is the same0 -

true that, I have use them in 30-30, WOW! those made it a whole new gun can only imagine that it would do the same for the 4440 -

Interesting how some like a lever gun with a pistol grip and others don't ... I'm with the bunch that says, nope ... a lever gun should have a straight stock! Why? QAs they say: beauty is in the eye of the beholder! And I think my preference is with the Winchester over the Marlin though I have both ... again, just a personal choice! 0 -
The pistol grip feels more natural to me. I've shot straight stocked lever guns and I didn't care for how my wrist was cocked when I shot them. 0 -
Hey catpeeler, are you set on the lever gun or do you just want a big-bore gun that you can put a tang sight on?
If it is the second, I would try to find a good single shot in 45-70. Much better accuracy. Plus with those calibers, you really shouldn't need a follow-up shot!

Good enough for me. I would go with the Marlin 1895 like you originally posted. Good gun. And with the Hornady ammo (LeveRevolution) it will be a good shooter. I would also recommend the Lyman front globe with that receiver peep.0 -
