If it was my money I would go with the M1A, I have shot the FAL and G3, but neather of them felt "right" to me.

But if you want to be a bit different you could get the Vector Arms V-51 Pistol:

Definately go with the springfield M1A, its lighter than the FAL and the AR-10. this gun is also a real tackdriver. you can find the bottom of the line M1A for about $1,150.00 and Ive seen one of the match grade ones going for $1,750.00. my buddy owns an M1A SOCOM 16 with an EO Tech Halo sight, this gun is unbelievable!!!! one of the most controllable firearms I've ever handeled, very accurate, and the double tapping is awesome. I unloaded a mag as fast as I could and got most of the rounds on the target at 100yrds.

you can't go wrong with an M1A!!!!

    Hands down ... HK-91!

Better sights(4 stage diopter) rugged, reliable, fewer parts, tons of accessories and cheap mags plus it's easy to clean ... no gas valve to worry about loosing or worrying about the op-rod breaking ... the HK is built tough as a tank and weighs about the same as a FAL or M1A

Nice rifles, all, but what groups do they shoot out of the box? Is there any semi .308 priced at the RRA LAR-8 price that shoots a tighter group?

Lots of good feedback guys...still doing lots of research and reading of articles

To answer you divebomb...it really depends upon how the weapon fits to you as much as how well it is put together. My thoughts on the best semiauto 308s in your categories:

< $1K: DPMS 308 in an AR Platform
~$1K-$2K: Springfield Armory M1A National Match
    > $2K: Springfield Armory M21 Tactical or M25 Whitefeather

Bolt Actions are totally different though
< $1K: out of the box Remington Model 700PS (brother has one)
    ~ $1K-$2K: Remington 700 Tactical Weapon System
    > $2K: get one custom built by ANY reputable company but most use a Model 700 action as the foundation

Nutfinn...is that the DPMS? Heavy barrel or carbine?

If so...how do you like it?

Edit: I see your other post now...this is the DPMS SASS then. Looks very nice, hope you get a chance to shoot it soon.

Does look like DPMS, but also like my DPMS I have S&W heat shroud grips on mine, those S&W plastic grips snap on everything. and the forward assist looks diffrent
Can we see the other side?
open sites I cant hit it, but with the socom 16 im right on in a fraction of the time it takes me to sight in again with the dpms,
    my problem Im sure!!!
    Love both rifles!!!!!

A metric FAL is the best 7.62mm rifle ever created.

    1919a4.

I think it's actual cheaper than a new Springfield made in Brazil POS or a Armafart AR10 that cracks it's buffer in 100 rounds and won't be covered under warranty.
