My only suggestion is to move up the chain of command in the union.

There is only one Union here for the whole island.

There is only a President and a Secretary.

There is no way to move up. I wish to form my own Union and replace this mess:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFL-CIO

    ahhh ha!

I can form my own Union:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Change_to_Win_Federation

ha ha ha ha.....I already have a name for it and everyone will join my army.....

We will charge no dues unless they are voted for by the majority....and such dues can only be used for ......Union Parties!!

    Woo hoo!

...Unions are great aren't they?...just ask the mucky muck union bosses drawing the big bucks, yours...[;)]

...Unions were fine when they were needed, their outdated, and un-needed now...they are a big part of why we are now over run with foreign cars.

...Unfortuanately when I was young, before I started my own Co., I was a teamster, was too young to know better...[xx(]

...Their asinine labor disspute and the way they handled it in the early 70's opened the door to the foreign toy car to come into this country with a far better product...Just the way work is done and charged for in a union shop makes a government defense contractor look frugal and efficient...[;)]

Federal collective bargaining units are not mandated to be "closed shop". You do not "have" to be a member.

Which union is representing you? Which branch of civil service do you work in? And at which location?

You are always free to try to bring in a new union. We attempted it years ago when our local president wasn't performing but refused to step down. We didn't have to bring a new one in, national stepped in and told him he was done enlight of the case and arguments against him.

Contact national headquarters for your union and ask for an investigation.

But how the heck did Nissan, Toyota, Hyundai, and all those fools walk into the US and open manufacturing plants and outdo Detroit?

The Union here does nothing. There are Civil Servants here with 40+ years in....that were supposed to be getting paid $1 extra an hour to transport bombs. They owe back pay to 5 folks.....that have 40+ years in.....which equals 200 years of back pay at $1 an hour.

Whata ya think a Union would do about it?...If you guessed "nothing" you are absolutely correct.

If the Govt. contracted this job out the Department of Labor would get involved and contractor WOULD get the extra $1 an hour or the Contractor would be FINED or FIRED.

What good do Unions do? NOTHING.

Thus why I want to replace ours. Their folks here use their position for personal gain while everyone else gets hosed over. I haved many, many, wintess's that would testify in court that this is happening.....but we can't go to court....We have to bargain with the Union that is screwing the people over.

    REVOLUTION.

..How? Because the unions wanted more money and benefits than the US government..and that was not too prfitable a proposition for Detroit...so there were strikes, upon strikes.

...Union members when they did work, they more or less sabbotaged the quality of the cars/trucks they put together ( to try and drive the car makers to give in to their demands)...with the "wink & nod" of their stewards and bosses.

...It all resulted in crappy American made vehicles, that were of a very poor quality, pieces of sheeet. The American public was then introduced to quality little nissan's and such...that would actually stay on the road more than they stayed in the shop...hello red carpet rolled out by the unions to the jap toy cars.

...By the unions "tactics", they cut their own throats...[;)]

Yes, we are mandated to be part of the collective bargaining unit by Slick Willy's Presidential decree.

Branch=AF/DOD. Location....you can figure it out from this link:

Our Union is #20. what a bunch of losers.

You ever seen a DOD Union member on strike? Happens for about 2 seconds then they are fired. ....well not fired......just grabbed...ran out the front gate... and not allowed to come back to work. Kinda humorous system it is.

The only reason Detroit Unions got power is because the TV and newspapers gave it to them. If it wasn't on the news.....who would care?

AHHH...I almost went there last year for some range threat work after they closed Pil Sung. Most of our assets diverted to Eielson though.

Union membership is not mandated. The shops are to be "open" shops. Let dig through my old disks and I'll send you some good info.

Having had a lot of personal experience with unions, your story sure sounds unusually complicated and appears to have some illegal, unreasonable actions by certain people.

Get a copy of your union's bylaws and you and others carefully study them. Find out what went wrong and what you can do about it and how you do it. Also contact the nearest office of the National Labor Relations Board. Ask for guideance and help. I have never heard of anyone "appointing" themselves as a union steward. The only way a member can be a steward is by vote of the members or, if there is a vacancy, being appointed by the local union president. And usuallly anyone who becomes a union steward has to have been a union member for at least one year.

If what you tell us is all correct, something smells very badly and you should be able to clean it up. If all else fails, since there are apparently several union members who are unhappy as you are, pool your money and go see a good lawyer who SPECIALIZES in union matters. After you get things cleaned up, if you must have a union, then you and others will have to spend a little time going to union meetings, volunteering for various union positions, etc. and keeping watch so this doesn't happen again.

If you had a fair and reasonable employer who treated the employees justly and fairly then it appears you had no need of a union. But in the case of workers, who for various reasons can't leave their job, and have a rotten employer, having a good and fair union can often make the difference between a miserable working life or a decent working life.

...Here is one LITTLE example of a scenario that happens everday, in every union warehouse.

A truckdriver pulls up to the dock to pick up a pallet of "parts".
There is a forklift sitting on the dock 10 feet from the loading dr of the truck; with the pallet of parts on the forks.

5 dock workers are within 50 feet of the forklift doing their "assigned" job duty/designation, say, maybe stacking a pallet with other "parts". The stacker (forklift operator(s)) are on break. The dock workers all know how to operate the forklift that is setting right by the truck...with the pallet on the forks, ready to be loaded.

BUT! Nary a dock worker one will jump on the forklift (though they know how to operate it) because their job description is not that of a stacker (forklift operator)...so....the load will sit, the rig will sit, and the driver will sit until a stacker driver gets off break to load the pallet that's been setting on the forklift!

...and whoa be it if a dock worker does happen to jump on that forklift to keep things rolling...seen it a thousand times...and things so much more ridiculous it would make your head swim in dissbelief!

...How about an office flourescent bulb burning out...and the office is half dark...and anyone could just stick in a new tube! Oh NO! Have to wait for the designated union electrician to come put the bulb in...no matter he or them are on lunch break...you just wait in the dark...loosing money by not being able to keep working because you cant see.

If you send a crate up to say NYC, the crate BETTER be stamped "Union Made"...or it will set on the truck, until doomsday; the union dock workers will not unload it, all true stories...[;)]

    Colt,

True stuff you are posting there. Kinda sounds like the military folk that work under me. LOL!

We can't operate like that....if we did planes wouldn't fly. If planes don't fly the govt get's billed by the contracted airlift $30,000 per hr.......delay them 2 hours and shoooot.....you get billed $60,000 for making them wait....

Would they fire some smuck that makes $30,000 a YEAR for wasting $30,000 in an hour by making 1 plane wait an hour?

No not really. There's no accountability here. Our local Union rep is so far up the military commands rear he could spit in their face and they would thank him for it and give him a monetary award of some sort.

It's sick. So sick I'm forming my own Union to fight the US military to quit wasting money.

How do I start a Union???!!!

Register as a non-profit and make a constitution????

ObiWan, do whatever you think you have to do, but you will find that you are urinating into a very strong air-stream (pissing into the wind). Among other things, you will find out that you are already represented by a union which is recognized by your employer. You can't have two unions in the same shop. You won't get the other union decertified. Even if you did get the other union decertified, you won't get your union recognized. Even if you did get your union recognized, it would be taken over by the same thugs and goons who own the other union.

I won't get into my first hand knowledge of unions. That's a whole nuther book (rant). My advice would be if you can't roll with the punches, find another job.

If that were true then me and others like me at our workplace would not belong to our union. Some people are just union haters regardless of whether or not a particular union does any good for the workingman. If such union haters are either in management for life, or one of the few workers who are pampered by management, then they will never change, or probably have reason, to change their union hating ways. Others who only want to do a good job for fair pay and fair treatment will probably, at some point in their working lives, wish they had someone to stick up for them when management kicks them around.

If you doubt, live and learn. As I did.

As I have posted until I am weary, there are good unions and there are bad unions. There are good people and bad people. Good guns and bad (shoddy) guns. Good governments and bad governments. And on and on and on. If I cared to spend the time, for every bad union story you tell me, I could tell you a good union story. So don't condemn all unions just as you don't condemn all people.

    OK here's the quick synopsis:

President Slick Willy mandated all Civil Service will be under bargaining units/ Unions.

This is forced and you can not opt out.

We are a group of say 30 folks and all of the sudden this new brown noser gets hired and appoints himself....as our Union Steward. There was no vote. He claimed the title.

Shortly later he quits doing his work (he's a menial laborer) and volunteers for things to get out of work and has his nose so far up a military NCO's rear....he no longer has to work.

He got an award for civilian of the year and was sent for a week to....HAWAII with the military NCO to screw around.

Someone told me I should petition to be the new Union Steward. I wrote the petition and everyone signed it.

Now the local Union president does not wish to recognize it.

    WTH???

Please tell me how to FIRE a UNION or it's UNION STEWARDESS.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

A problem arises when no one volunteers to be a steward during the election. Someone has to do it and a union president can sometimes make an appointment of anyone. Unfortunately, those that get appointed can be idiots.

I live in a place where unions are a way of life. I think they are nothing more than a legal way of strong arming employees for cash. Unions where good when they served a real purpose. I have many members of my family in unions and they dont seem real happy with them. Well thats as far as i want to go with this...[:p]

I've only joined the Union to get someone relieved of being the shop union steward....as soon as he's toast....

I'm turning in the paperwork to quit the union. Did you know you HAVE to pay dues for one year before you can cease paying Union dues? It's in their contract.

collective bargaining agreement has been negotiated at this location....

""President Clinton issued Executive Order 12871 on October 1, 1993, that tells agencies to enter into a "partnership" with unions representing their employees""

If I can find out how to "De-certify" a labor union....ohhh baby....I'll have a new hobby for 2007.
    0
  • 41 nut
To decertify contact the National Labor Board in DC. Ask for a decertification vote. They will tell you how many members of your union it takes requesting the vote to have the election and furnish the necessary cards. Then if enough cards are sent to them they will conduct a decertification vote. Then you have to wait one year before voting to certify another union.

Gee, you're not in a "closed" shop afterall. There is no "mandate" to join the union.

quote:""President Clinton issued Executive Order 12871 on October 1, 1993, that tells agencies to enter into a "partnership" with unions representing their employees""

On February 17, 2001, President Bush signed Executive Order (E.O.) 13203, which revoked E.O. 12871. E.O. 12871 required the establishment of labor-management partnerships at appropriate levels and directed heads of agencies to bargain over permissive subjects of bargaining covered by section 7106(b)(1), Title 5 of the U.S. Code.

E.O. 13203 revoked E.O. 12871 in its entirety. Among other things, the National Partnership Council was immediately dissolved. The Presidential Memorandum of October 28, 1999, entitled "Reaffirmation of Executive Order 12871 - Labor Management Partnerships" was also revoked. The Office of Personnel Management and heads of executive agencies were directed to rescind any orders, rules, regulations, guidelines, or policies implementing or enforcing E.O. 12871 or the Presidential Memorandum.
Who's been feeding you your information???

What the union will not tell you is that you can also quit on your SCD anniversary in addition to your union anniversary date.
