Is Ruger Mini 14 Really That Bad ??

the mini-14 and mini-30 are both great little plinkers. They are reliable and there are many aftermarket parts for them. The bad side is that they are not accurate. I had a mini-30 and my SKS para would shoot groups half the size. If your looking for a plinker, go ahead and get one, but if your going to shoot long range there are better choices.

Simply put---- If you want to spray bullets and knock down bottles at 20 yards, Then the mini 14 is a fine weapon to do that with.

    BUT
If you want to use it as a tach driver at 100 yards, Then you will not be happy with the gun.

how accurate are they at 100 yards ? when i read reviews of them everyone gives very different measurements.

I have never shot a Ruger, but I briefly considered one when I bought an AK. I think the Ruger is probably built better than the AK, but I bought the AK.

Go buy the Ruger and tell us how it is.

    My mini-30 held 4" at 100 yards with good ammo, 5 1/2" @ 100 with surplus

Newt, I have owned a mini-14 for several years. No, it doesn't have sniper rifle accuracy, but mine is pretty darn good! The one thing that has impressed me about the little rifle is it has never jammed or gave any kind of mechanical trouble. They are a lot of fun to shoot.[:D]

I had one for about 3 yrs couldnt hit a damm thing with it so i put a scope on it still could hit anything with it consitantly. I have heard that the older onc's had the wrong twist rate and the newer one's are better but They Are Not AR15's. Fun to shot but is suck to miss.

I owned one, they are OK, but if you want to use more than the 5 shot mag, watch out- you won't have a lot of barrel life. Also, they heat up really quick and start to widen their groups. And, they are no longer $379. If you go with the Ruger, get a ranch model with the built in mounts - the aftermarket ones aren't that good...

Consider either a Siaga in 223 or a SKS or AK in 762x39

I have owned four different Mini-14's over the past 15 years. They are not tack driver, but they are decent, reliable firearms. The one I still own will shoot under 3" at 100 yards.

I have taken a couple of Yotes with this rifle. The longest shot was approx. 112 yards.

Rugers are great guns...I own several, an old Ranch Rifle, Redhawk, and a Mark II. They are beefy, heavy and strong. There are a lot of aftermarket items for the Mini also.

In comparing Mini's with other semi rifles, there are several that are lighter, more accurate and have many more "add-ons" giving them a greater following.

If you like the Mini, get the Mini, you won't be let down.

Okay I sold that car and now I have some cash to spend. I didnt get much for the car so I am only going to buy a rifle. I want either the Armalite AR10 in .308 or a Bushmaster in .223 I wont use the gun for hunting, its going to be for a SHTF type gun. I want knockdown power, range and accuracy with the ability to fire off lots of rounds. However, I am worried about the cost difference in ammo. It looks like .308 ammo is almost 80% more than .223 That could really add up.
I am also considering the Barret M468 as well.

Gee, what happened to the AR10, the Bushmaster, or the Barrett M468 you were planning on purchasing with the money from the car you sold? Oh, that's right. You can't have any of those firearms in California. [;)]

you are a moron who spends way too much time picking apart my posts.

The ruger Mini's are decent rifles, there not very accurate, but they are reliable. A kalishnakov is more reliable, and more accurate usually at around the same price. Of course most of the ones I"ve shot was in the D.O.C, and they've had a lot of rounds put through them. 3 inch groups was about as good as I could get with them.

    +1
I don't drive tacks with mine at 200 or 300 yards. I do, however, have a lot of fun with it and I can hit what I'm aiming at. Plus, mine is so dressed up you'd not even recognize the thing. It gets a lot of attention at the range with several people wanting to know what it is.

I'd take the thing if it was a SHTF situation. No, it isn't a sniper rifle, but it is very reliable, ammo is very easy to come by (and highly affordable), it doesn't jam, it eats anything and it is built well.

Disagree with the Nay sayers, mini 14 is a great little gun, A lot of fun and can be reasonably accurate. It is not generally a target gun however I can hit at 100 yards all day long, now longer ranges obviously the MOA increases and it is not sold or designed to compete with target rifles. Its a "ranch rifle" nice and handy, short enough to carry around. And VERY reliable.
Buy it not to compete in match rifle competitions but to have fun and you will enjoy. And hey I doubt seriously any of the people who scream about the accuracy will stand down range and let you shoot at them[}:)][:D]

A lot of people must like them as they have went up in price at Walmart almost $70 recently. I have one and the action is as smooth to shoot as any gun including my AR-15. For the price though I would prefer other guns better.

wow, my plain ar will shoot 2moa with surplus, 1/2 that with ballistic tip reloads. minis are just as expensive when you consider how much more good mags cost. awesome target model, that is like a sport model ford escort.

I like mine alot. It is an older ranch model with the fold down sight. great shooter not going to say its dead on but it fits its purpose. Shoots wolf ammo too.

They are a handy rifle to have around and I put them on Par with a M1 carbine as far as accuracy goes.

The reason so many people trash talk the Ruger Ranch Rifles is because they do not want to make factory 20 rounders anymore.

I'll try any gun once. Tried a Mini-14 and sold it. My AKs and SKSs shot better than it at 100yds. A $500 AR15 copy will out shoot all 3.

During the ban good working hicap mags were impossible to find for under $80 to $100 each. Other cheaper mags wouldn't work at all-- caused all sorts of stovepipes. Since the ban ended factory mags are still up there in price.

That would be a case of the stove calling the kettle black. One of the reasons I "pick on you" is because of the bogus issues that you continue to bring to this forum. How you hate people, religions, politics, how you want someone to "please punch someone in the face", the constant lies and misrepresentations. You're constantly insulting and encourage trouble and arguments here, yet can't take it when it's directed back at you. You've given me indigestion on numerous occasions, once to the point where I felt it would be in my best interest to leave the forums until you went away, or were "booted" off. After further consideration, I decided that someone like you is not going to run off someone like me. In short, you are the epitome of a troll. The old saying holds true and you need to consider this: "If you don't like the heat, stay out of the kitchen." [;)]

Hobbyguy you are trolling with this post. I have notified the mods. Take that crap to some other forum.

this was a post about the mini 14. if you need to turn everything into ME then i would suggest you visit one of your local shrinks in montana and get some medication or therapy. surely in country like that you could find better things to do than always make a post about me. are you just jealous because i have been in montana longer than you ? hehe

drobs - I'm rather surprised that you don't recognize the irony of my follow-up postings in regard to "newt". More so, I'm actually surprised that you would defend him and find fault with my pointing out that his postings are typically hateful, degrading, insulting, false, or intended to get people like myself upset. He does it routinely and I counter many of his attacks, but do not set out to do harm to this forum in any way. On the contrary, as I take pride in most of my postings. Humility is not automatically developed at birth, it's acquired from life experiences. He makes statements about "why do people hate this, or that?" when his agenda is only to insite arguments. Stating that he's done this, or done that, owns this, owns that, is going to do this, or that, lived here, or lived there, when most, or all of it is pure fiction and again, only to get a negative reaction from the members. Simply to degrade religions, ethnicity, race, color, creed, or intentionally insite problems here, is not what the forum is about. You should also note that I don't (or very rarely) target others with my postings. My pointing out that many of his postings are fictional is not "trolling" from my perspective, but rather educating the forum. If you read comments posted by others, you will see that I'm not alone. Others are equally offended by many of his postings. I'm merely speaking up.

Perhaps you should read a bit deeper into some his postings like:

"Somebody please punch Sonjaya in the face"

    or:

    "Beverly Hills is 25% Iranian"

    or:

    "Fox News is Trash"

    or:

    "AOL is Beyond Liberal Now"

Finding fault with me and not seeing that I am 100% correct about this member makes you no different than him. Perhaps you enjoy the turmoil and drama he creates? I obviously don't. If I am advised by the moderators to "back-off" and allow this member to continue insiting problems here, I will. At that point I will have no reason to remain an active member. Otherwise, I would hope that eventually "newt" will recognize that he is doing the wrong things on this forum. For the record, I know that two wrongs don't make a right and I truly don't get pleasure from poking him with a stick. I would prefer not to be "picking on him" and be able to enjoy the forum for what it is. A forum, not a war against everyone and everything "newt" doesn't like.[;)]

It's real simple, if you have nothing positive to add to the topic of a thread... Don't post. I have better things with my time to do then go read every thread newtgingrich posts. Newtgingrinch may be a troll but your post on here was flat out trolling.
