DeWalt or Ridgid??
Which is best? Run time and reliability?

Ridgid that HomeDepot sells is NOT the same as Ridgid tools that were sold by wholesales for years. The power tools are a HomeDepot exclusive. The recharagble tools were crap IMHO, probs with the batteries and chargers. DeWalt makes a better product IMHO. 0 -
Like both, personnaly. Have a few Dewalt drills, and a few Rigid tools, skill saw, sawzall. Both very reliable for me. Had 'em a good while, too. 0 -

You can save a ton of money if you buy the DeWalt combo kit instead of buying one tool at a time.[:)]
Has anyone tried the new Litium Ion batterys? They claim 2000+ charges out of the batteries and 2-3 times the run time.0 -

Bosch tools bought skill saws and they no longer fix tools over ten years old. The old reliable heavy duty skill worm gear saws are considered land fill by the German tool maker.
ECC your right Dewalts, Black and Decker daddy is cheaper and preforms well enough for this old man.
I sent my 8 1/2 skill worm gear saw to Makita repair and they put in a new switch and cord and bushes I provided in for $49.000 -
I use dewalt 18volt stuff,Im hard on my tools ,and the only gripe I have is batteries,If you leave them on the charger too long ,they imprint.Keep in mind I have 3 drills witch means alot of batteries to keep up with.If you charge them and use them you shouldent have any problems.Also I use a 12 volt charger that reall works well for me. 0 -

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?
I have a Dewalt circular saw, and a 12 volt DeWalt cordless drill. Both are top quality, I have used each for over seven years doing construction, I couldn't ask for better performance.
Makita makes some nice saws, don't get me wrong. But the DeWalt saw is better.0 -
Personally I like DeWALT, just my preference, and for my around the home application I have found their tools to be rugged and dependable. I guess if you want to find out what's considered the best, go to job sites and see what folks are using that depend on power tools to earn their living, they are money to them. 0 -

I don't no how old you are, or how many hours a day you work, when you pass 70 and start losing strength you may want to consider giving up the cordless 18 and especially the 24 volt tools.
New Construction is so far down pawn shops have so many tools they can't store them all, and are discounting them 50% to get rid of them.0 -

That is probably b/c they make more money on a Ridgid sale. I use power tools every day of my life. I also read "Tools of the Trade" and other construction periodicals and tool reviews. Makita makes some of the best power tools available. There are certain tools that I prefer another brand, such as Bosch for a Jig saw.
Here's a tip to making sure your batteries last as long as possible in a cordless tool. NEVER leave them in the tool for storage. When you do so, the battery will actually use it's own energy to maintain heat. It will adversely affect your battery life. They are best stored outside of the tool.0 -

That's a joke, but like I said, Ridgid Power Tools are a HomeDepot "exclusive", so of course he would say that. Makita has always been a good brand IMHO...my "sawzall" is a Makita0 -

I don't understand why a respected tool maker like Ridgid would make a lesser-quality line of tools with their name on them, to be sold only in the Home Depot. If they are inferior, and have the Ridgid name, won't the Ridgid name come to be associated with an inferior tool? I'm not saying it isn't so, but it doesn't make good business senxe. 0 -
If it is any hint....I see more stolen Dewalt tools than Ridgid. That means the construction guys are buying these, leaving them on their trucks before they make it to the 70 lb crack head who can't tell me what the heck he's trying to sell....which I get to say "lets call the Birmingham police and run the serial numbers before I buy it." You just don't know how many people suddenly leave when told that (without the tool.)......and YES I turn them in if and when that happens!!!! 0 -

Rigid is not the same tool it was back in the day. New Rigid tools are chinese (or taiwan, i forget), but either way not great quality. Dewalt is much better. Makita is very good also. Not a fan of Ryobi. Porter Cable is still pretty good, but not like it used to be. Bosch is my favorite. 0 -

What I recently learned is that the "Firestorm" brand of Black and Decker is a bit better than the Craftsman brand of power tools.
Also that Kobalt tools sold by Lowes are mfg by the same company that makes craftsman mechanics tools.0 -
You can safely store your batteries IN THE TOOL. There is NOTHING that would make it "heat up" or whatever. There just isn't. Just a switch and a motor, thats all. Trust me on this one.

I have to agree with Mercury on this one: I have put an amp meter on a Dewalt drill and there is no current flow unless the trigger is engaged.
I have Dewalt stuff. During the winter a local lumber yard sells 18 volt Dewalt tools (new) for $100 each, including the battery. Tool bags and cases are free. Chargers are $10.0 -

I disagree. The contacts on the battery are engaged when the battery is left in the tool. It was explained to me that the battery will generate heat (especially in cold conditions) and drain itself. Since then, I have quit leaving the batteries in my tools and the battery life has improved...not the run time, but the overall battery life.
Alpine...how did you run that particular test when the contacts for the battery are up inside the tool??? There is no real way to access them when the battery is in the tool...0 -
