Those bad privately owned companies are bad for wanting to make a profit. We should shut them down and let the gubmint run them.

"gubmint" limits the profits of utility companies just for this very reason. These are rediculous numbers. The "bad privatly owned companies" need to be put in check just like the "bad privatly owned" utility companies are.

Gas taxes, Benjamin, gas taxes - there's lies the future, my boy, gas taxes! Forget the little man - gas taxes is where it's at, Benjamin!

the govt makes way more per gallon than the gas cos do.
Oh but abc says its "outragous" to make record profits
forget that these are INVENTORY profits and must be used to buy more oil AT RECORD PRICES.Also PROFIT MARGINS are AVERAGE with other large industries

Get mad at the democrats for not letting any new domestic production or refining occur.

Even a person with limited capacity for economics should be able to comprehend that.

Never mind, we will just start moving towards communism on this front also
And well cap the price per gallon @ $1.50

There's a difference between "profit" and price gouging (robbery).

actually, they are publicly owned, by shareholders, so i think the solution would be to arrest all of the shareholders and send them to Gulag.

Utilities are regulated because they area a geographic monopoly since you can only use one electric, water, sewage, gas, etc. in a given location.

You have a choice of companies for gasoline and can often see three or four different comopanies at one corner in town. You have a choice, hence no monopoly.

BTW, have you checked the volume of sales by those fuel companies? I'll bet you'll be a bit surprised at the actual profit margin if you take the time to look. Those profits won't look so large if you compare them to total sales. I'll bet many here had their house increase in value more as a percentage than the oil companies made in profit percentage. Did they make too much also, should they be regulated or asked to give back the value of their house?

Exxon sold almost $378 billion of product last year, so their $39.5 billion in profits is less than 11% - not exactly huge profit margins there.

I had stocks that made more than 11% last year, maybe you did also, should we give part of that back? Was the profit wrong and excessive?

    You had stock in Exxon??

Personally, I think there should be SOME regulation on this. They blame every price mark up on something, but they hardly come back down from whatever price they set after each "disaster."

Heck, when daylight savings hit this year, there was an article on CNN.com that said something about the price of fuel will rise because there would be more daylight to drive in. COME ON!!!!!! that's just plain stupid. (Yes I DID read that off the website)

I do????? maybe where you live but where i live one truck comes in to town delivers gas too all the little gas station and goes right back to the same refinery that came from over and over and over, They all have differnt logos at the pump but its all the same gas.

Ivensting in oil is like buying a new knife to slit your own throat!!!

the more money they make is just more money they have to buy up all future alternative fuel technology so that when time comes and we do switch from gas to an alternative. guess what they own it and make trillions in profits...instead of "only billions" and guess where those profits will come from US, YOU, ME, And the NIEGHBOR... If we want to continue living the way we do we'd best be fixing this or we'll all be in the poor house.

    Three things:

    1. They are privately held companies. They have a responsibility to their shareholders to maximize their profits. Doing less would be irresponsible. Would you say, "oh, I paid $20,000 for this house 30 years ago but will now sell it for $30,000 instead of the $250,000 it is worth because I don't want to gouge the consumer?" Not likely.

    2. As much as we grumble, not only do we continue to pay, but prices will keep going up. They charge what the market will support, no more, even if we don't like it.

    3. Demand for gas continues to rise; ergo, the companies continue to sell more and more gas every year. Doesn't it stand to reason that if you sell more product this year than last, then you MAKE MORE MONEY? For example, I sell widgets, right? Hypothetically. This year I sell 100 widgits at 5% profit. Let's say I charge $1/widgit, that means I have $5 profit. Next year I sell 120 widgits at 5% profit. My profit has just gone up to $6. But I'm not gouging the customer! And from what I hear, the profit MARGIN for oil sold hasn't gone up much.

What frightens me most is that economic professors are spouting this garbage about price gouging and such. And people said Reagan had voodoo economists....... shudder.

No I don't like high gas prices. I do understand them, and I don't blame oil companies.

To me anyhow, its not about how rich a person, or corporation is. Its about what they do to get rich. Theres nothing wrong with being rich, but the end does not justify the means. You don't have to make life hard on someone else to make yourself rich. If you own a company here in the states, and your making 10 million a year, is that not enough money? So why shut it down and take it over seas to make 30 million a year. If you cant get by on 10 million, you got anna nichole syndrome, and need to be put to sleep. Gas prices were going up some before katrina, then they used the excuse of katrina to jump it another dollar on the gallon. Thats a bunch of crapola. Get it down to pre katrina prices, and folks may execpt it better. There is no need in hurting the pockets of the avarage American just so some CEO somgripe can make a few billion, when a few million will do the trick. So all of you CEO and big oil apologist go ahead and call me a lib. While I don't think I am, if standing for what I stand for makes me a lib, then I'll proudly be one.

You can't do much about the taxes on dividends, but there are lots of legal things that can be done to ease the pain on the selling end.

by running them into the ground. what a splendid idea -- let's further destroy the country, though i am all up for it, elect klintonobama and just wait for this catalyst to work, however, if i were you, being a socialist and all, i would start looking for a place outside this country 'cause you wouldn't like what's coming. though, you do have a chance of turning the USA into USSA (yes, as in Union of Socialist States of America) or some such, but i doubt it'd last long 'cause all you lefties aren't much of fighters when it comes to a real one.
