Funny isn't it?
Toyota posted profits of about 50 billion, don't see everyone accusing them of gouging or expecting the Government to put a cap on what they charge for their cars, no, they get a pat on the back and are admired for running a profitable Company.
The oil Companies are no different, they manufacture and market a product, and like all business they charge as much as the market will tolerate. If you don't like the price, don't buy the product, if your going to cry "but I have to buy gas" then guess what, you have to pay the price their asking.
Welcome to the real World
I think you need to check that figure as I suspect it is simply the net sales figure for the first quarter of the year. $50 billion is completely out of line for this company for one year.

It came from memory of last years earnings.
So I did a quick search
'Toyota's reporting of its annual earnings on a consolidated basis for the twelve months ended March 31st shows net revenues of 21.03 trillion yen ($188.6b), a 13.4% increase y-o-y. Operating income increased by 12.3% to 1.87 trillion yen ($16.8b) and net income rose 17.2% to 1.37 trillion yen (US$12.3b). Toyota remarked that all three of these figures are record highs and this is the third consecutive year Toyota earned net income of over 1 trillion yen.'
http://japan.seekingalpha.com/article/10384
So $188/4 = $47 Billion per quarter, close enough.
My point is why just the oil Companies. I get a Subway sandwich most days for my lunch, used to cost $3.10 with tax, now it's gone up to $3.40. If this price hike happened overnight with gas, then all the Chevy Subdivision drivers would be screaming 'rip off' and demanding the Government do something.
Seems a lot of people think that low gas prices are some sort of Constitutional right.

Well for one thing, the automobile market, is truly a free market. If you don't like the price of a ney toyota, you can find a different brand, for a different price, or look for a used one. People don't have to have toyotas, they do have to have gas though. They are a bit different. Now I'll agree, many are much to wastefull of things like gas, but simply put, the oil companies are gauging, to not see this is to be blind.0 -

dlrjj himself said we have a choice to live near a good paying job. i have 2 one 30miles away good paying office job. i drive a 30+mpg car to and from. the other so that i may maintane my "livlyhood" ie guns and atv's and such. i can drive anywhere from 2 miles to a 100 miles. its a portable welding buisness that i do on the side. has recently become somewhat unprofitable. two reasons
1. obvioulsy GAS/FUEL
2. The prices in which i charge where based on 15% profit on material and 5% on consumables. ie. rod, gas cylinders,Fuel, and a set hrly rate.
So now that i have to increase the cost of my services due to the rising cost of Fuel/gas and other consumablies they hear my numbers and just don't really need the work done.
point being we have a choice of new used ford dodge toyota, BUT do we really have a choose of fuel's. i haven't seen to many electric trucks that will hual 2000lbs of steel and a welder.
thus the monopoly in which big oil is seen as0 -

amen, you think at a conservative forum full of small business owners, people would not only know bettter, but fear the gov't trying to fix the market
As a small buisness owner, i would think that you would be the first to see how this will effect your buisness. for example what happens when i stop buying what your selling because i can't afford luxuries anymore and only buy the essentials. then what are you going to do for a living. That $6.88 cents per share your got on your oil stock if you should have any probably isnt going to pay the rent once the govmint taxes it.
I have a small portable welding buisness, Fuel is my #1 exspence so in order to maintane my "profit" i pass it on to the comsumers right.
That only works if the consumer is out there spending money. when he starts buying only essentials small buisness's are the first to get hurt.0 -
Sorry, the world is not fair, and the govt cannot make it fair. It can only screw it up more.
It could REMOVE burdens it has placed like no drilling in ANWAR, but it is sad to see americans look to govt to fix markets. thats why we had a shortage in the 70s.
better to let the price go up, and people can cut back on the areas that arent worth the price of gas. i am sorry you dont like it, I dont paying $60 to fill up either , but I am not going to jump on this communist bandwagon that is so in vogue. Also you said
"have to start somewhere"
Ok I agree we could drill more, look for other sources, but the worst thing you can do it encourage govt to use its blunt hand without understanding how this will affect the market.0 -
Toyota has been reinvesting a lot of its profits in new plants to increase its production.
The oil companies have done nothing to significantly increase production capability since the 70's.
I'll bet that China is busy right now building massive refineries. They will probably shortly become the biggest customer for the world's crude oil. The way things are going in the arab world and Venezuela we may find ourselves sucking hind t i t on foreign oil. Remember the oil "shortages" in the late 70's? They may be real in the future.0 -
...I get 50 mpg, in a chevy suburban [:0]! How(?), you may ask. SIMPLE and cheap too!...$2.99 for four.
...I bought and "installed" 4, that's correct, only FOUR 1/2" magnetic steel "marbles"...just dropped them in my tank and WHAM, 50mpg!...Going to buy 4 more and double my mpg up to a 100mpg...eat your hearts out...[;)]

Communist Bandwagon? now im a communist, didnt i just say i am a small buisness owner like yourself? and isnt communistic for one person/corporation/goverment to have all the economic power. these big corporation's are no different than the "communistic" goverment that you fear.
Yes they could remove burdens as you say, the question is would they take the opportunity to build more refineres increase production reduce gas prices??? maybe, It would hurt the bottom line for the first 20-30 yrs. isnt this the same complaint that they have now.0 -

The real problem is goverment has passed laws protecting these giant coporations, limiting the ability of the people to fight back. I'm not so much for the goverment restricting the coporations, as I am the goverment either giving the people the ability to fight back with out prosecution. Things are not even. Perhaps we need a bit of controled anarchy.0 -
Fatboy, I agree that laws to keep firms from competeing as an issue and should be removed.
However the dominant problem is not letting firms expand and people emoitionally throwing blame wherever without understanding the situation0 -

Tsavo303,
I think this goes to show, (that most people whom don't have the understanding that you do.) this is how they think. getting stuck by the MAN (the goverment). and getting hosed by the other side. people get stuck in the middle and what do they do they point a finger. as you can see the finger can be pointed in both directions. does this make those who place blame one way or the other communist?
at this point i will agree to disagree, thanks to tsavo303 and drljj for some both enlightening and useful information, until the next "emotional rant" i bid you good day0 -
good day (tipping hat)[8D] it was fun 0 -

So $188/4 = $47 Billion per quarter, close enough.
[/quote]Neil, you're still confusing revenue with income. They seem to be the same to the average person, but to a company they are night and day different.
Revenue is the amount of money you take in, while income is the profit, if any, that you make off of it.[:)]0
