Hog hunting
Hunting buddy and myself are looking into Traveling to do alittle hog hunt for the first time. Can anyone tell what state is the best. Looking for High population of hogs and public land to hunt them on.

I am going to take my friend hog hunting he is from AR i am from LA i know it is hot but i hunt year "round" i usually use a 22 lr or a 22 mag at the most we use dogs to "bay" up the hogs they usually run from 120lbs to the old boars at 6 or even 700lbs i have never had a proablem with my 22 i killed a 529 lb hog with one shot from a 22 lr. but he wants to kill one with a bow on the ground and doesn't want me to stand backup with my rifle this sounds dangerous to me i have been cut twice hunting them once really bad what my question is is there anyone here that has hunted them with a bow from the ground i am an avid bow hunter but i have never had the desire to do this ( with my dogs i can give him a nice standing shot) but i think i'm going to bring my rifle P.S. i have never been cut by a hog that i had shot

I wanna go. I'm in NC, what's the farthest I'll have to go to find some (counting on finding some land or something to hunt). Can I do it on public land if I'm from out of state? I see hogs are a big problem, and I wanna make the world a better place one round at a time. [:D] 0 -

Just about finished with my Scout rifel. Enfield No4 with barrel cut down to 16 1/4 inches. And Bushnell red dot scope. This thing is cool. Hope to try it out next weekend now that Select-fire has a boat. We need a boat to get to where the hogs are. If we get one just might have to have anothe shoot. Maybe call it The Appliance shoot monster truck mudd bogg tractor pull hog roast coon dog jamborre.

My son in-law has asked me to go on a hunting trip with him. He does a lot of bow and gun deer hunting with his family here in Northeastern Wisconsin and at his family's deer camp in Northern Wisconsin from Mid-October through November. However, he wants to take me hunting somewhere different, just the two of us, for which I am very grateful. I do love to hunt pheasants but do not care much for the meat, do not have a hunting dog, and could not really find many places in North or South Dakota that interested us. Somehow we stumbled upon "Hog Hunting." As we discussed it we really liked the idea, neither one of us has ever done it before, our families love pork, it would be good practice for him for deer hunting, it is something different, we might be able to go in September, and important to me I may not have to sit in or under a tree for hours (which I hate).
However, we have no idea where to go. We have a week to 10 days for our trip. On the internet it looks like Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas are the best places to go. Driving from Green Bay, WI we would rather go to Oklahoma or Arkansas, but what is most important is to have a great time and maybe bring some meat home. There are so many places to go and we have no experience so we were hoping you we could get some help from all of you. Does anyone know of some good outfitters, guides, or hunting ranches to go to? We would also like to do a little fishing too. Our budget is around the $1500 each amount. We really appreciate your assistance.0 -
I was talking with the man that owns the lake cottage I have been working on. He was telling me that the hunt club he belongs to is haveing a problem with hogs. Where can I go for fair chase hog hunts, without spending several thousand dollars? Guided would be nice, but not nice enough for two grand.
I'd be looking for a two-man hunt, open to all weaponry (except a knife--I'm not that hardcore), and any kind of hogs. Help would be appreciated, especially first-hand experience. Thanks.0 -
Has anyone on this site done ant wild hog hunting? I live in Missouri and just read in the paper we have over 10,000 wild hogs in our state. They are getting so bad the conservation dept. wants you to kill any hogs you encounter on site.Just wondering if there are some hog hunting pros out there that can give me some pointers. 0 -

Hunted them from blinds in N.C. Very tough animals with a shell like layer of material that covers the rib cage. Not too sure what it is. A guy I was hunting with shot a pig through the chest with a .450 Marlin. The pig was about 160-180 lbs. The bullet did not make it out the other side and was stuck in that shell. I shot mine down the spine that day from the stand with no problems. Bring enough gun. 0 -
...Well don't guess I'm a pro, but have killed/trapped a lot..up to a little over 500lbs.; ever since the vermin have moved into this area STRONG! Fixing to go check 5 traps in a short (I'm at the ranch for awhile)...might take and set up in my favorite spot 'bout dark and see if I can shoot an eatin' size one ,125lbs. or less...and if I feel like getting up before the chickens in the morning, may hunt a little then too.
...IF I hunt them, I use a 06, because the place I set up is about 150-200yd shots. They run a dry (summer only) creek bed and there is a BIG bunch of trees/brush that has blocked the creek at one point; and they have to come out of the creek to get around it. I sit in a lounge chair w/ a cooler, snacks (tough huntin[:D]) under some trees about 150yds or so away on a hill over looking the pasture the creek runs along...so when they come out of the creek it's a nice clear shot.
DANG IT, this computer Im not used to "posted 'fore I was thru.
...If Im feeling like I REALLY want to shoot one (there are a LOT here) I pile up apples,fruit,potatoes, and corn when it comes in...and then leave a Hanztle and Gretal trail (just a little!) down to the edge of the creek they run. That seems to pull 'em out and brings them to the pile of fruit and stuff, about a 100yd shot this way.
...Here anyways, they are mostly seen late evening right before dark, and right at daylight.
..As for as the round, depends on the distance and shot placement. Since my shots are 150-200+, I use 180grn..deer hunt with 150grn., same 06.
...Hogs have a freakin armour bone on their entire front neck/shoulder area..and the way they are built...a round can and does bounce off sometimes with a bad frontal shot. 180grn 06 works well just hit 'em good...if you wound one, might take a little care if your intent on finding it, they get pizzed! At 3-5-600lbs and huge tusks, they can get nasty, can and will get under a horse's belly and actually gut it...so be careful around any you "just wound"...and their hardly ever by themselves.
...Don't mistake poor little javelinas with big German browns, and other ferral hogs; javilinas aren't mean, wild hogs are! A BIG javilina is probably 55 pounds, mostly around 40 or so. Javilinas are about blind and if you come up on a pack and you think there charging you, their probably not...just spooked and happen to be running your way cause they cant see you. Ive had 'em run past me on both sides, they just wanted to get away was all.
I know that overnight they can make a pasture look like a moonscape...and it is now a constant battle there are so many here...and on 2,000 other leased acres dn the road apiece.

More hogs than antlered deer here in NE FL so my hunting (grudgingly) is more hog hunting than deer hunting.

Putting down a hog requires very good shot placement, or what most people would consider "way-too-much-gun".
A good side-on, head shot, below and a little forward of the ear, with any high powed rifle will get the job done, BUT that is the only sweet spot I've found.
They have real THICK skulls/foreheads and a shot between the eyes might not kill one (happened to a friend of mine).
I shot one in the shoulder at 30 yards with a 150grn .308 ballistic tip and it calmly trotted 300 yards down the road and we tracked it another 300-400 yards into the swamp before the blood trail just finally petered out. Ballistic tip offer rapid expansion and are great for thin skinned game like deer, but are inadequate for thick skinned, armor plated, heavy boned hogs.
I now load 180grn Nosler Partions in my .308. A lot more bullet than I need for deer, but just what the Dr. ordered if I can't get that side-on head shot.
IMO +/-80lb pigs are best for the table. Bigger sows are OK, but the meat of big males NEEDS to be soaked/marinated.0 -
in hawaii they hunt boars with a dog and a knife. old school style, you have to catch the pig with your bare hand and slit his throat. there are plenty of videos on youtube showing it. 0 -
OJMayo - They do the same down in the Okechobee swamps in S. Florida... dogs, duct tape, and a knife. Catch the hog with the dogs, decide if you want to keep it, if so, tape it up and take it home to feed up on corn for a while, then slaughter...

I have killed about a dozen in the Oconee River Swamps in central Georgia. Mostly 100 to 150 pound size. Best meat I ever ate.
I just shot right behind the shoulder, just like you would a deer. I have seen that photo before which shows the lungs are so far forward, I think Ga. hogs are built a little differently, the lung shot on the hog was just like the lung shot on the deer, for me.
I mostly used the 30-06. I also killed 3 hogs with a .50 muzzleloader with round ball, no problem. One time I killed a 125 pound boar with a .45 Colt acp. I went for the lung shot, as usual, from 30 yards. Hit high, and broke the spine. He couldn't use his hind legs, I went right up and shot him twice in the lungs, lights out. That was an enjoyable hunt, stalking through the swamps for a few hours with only a pistol in the holster, and not having to lug a rifle.
Get an electric smoker and smoke a shoulder or ham for 8 hours, mmmmm good.
I always avoided hitting the shoulder, unlike the deer, lots of good meat in a hog's shoulder.0 -
Sounds really interesting. Hog hunting is something that sounds like fun. In choosing a rife would a 270 be enough to deal with a hog? No hogs in Jersey so my collection of rifles is mostly military, M1, M14, 8mm Mauser & shotguns.I stink at handgun's so I can rule that out. 0 -
A .270 would be a good hog rifle. Use a heavy bullet that won't expand rapidly. 0 -

I'm in Mo. also, but haven't gotten aqround to hunting them yet. Don't
know if we have any around the place here, but they are abundant in
an area about 20mi. away. May ease over there and take the 270, or
the AR.
The neighbors killed a large one a few years ago, looked to be 350 or
so lbs, hanging in their tree. They gave us a bunch of meat, and it
wasn't bad at all.
Might make for some good roadside type hunting for me.[:)]0 -
I live in Southeast Louisiana, and I hunt them every year. I pack a sidearm, usually a 9mm or a .40 caliber. That's just in case you run up on one in the thickets. I also tote a 12 GA loaded with 00 buckshot. They are VERY mean too, and they will rush in a New York second. Just be careful. 0 -
One of my Paramedic buddies was out hunting in the swamp one day. He stepped on a hollow log, but he didn't know it was a hollow log. He also didn't know there was a little piglet in there, about the size of a football.
He crunched right through the log. The piglet started squealing. Out of the bushes ran an angry mama hog.
Horace climbed the closest tree, damn fast. It was a little seven inch pine tree, the first branch was fifteen feet high. He said he got up there so fast, he didn't even realize he had climbed the tree. He looked down, and the damn sow was butting the tree.
The tree was waving back and forth, the sow was hitting it so hard. He thought he better grab his 30-06 and shoot the hog, he knew if she knocked him from the tree she would mess him up.
He looked down and saw the rifle sticking in the mud, barrel first. It had fallen off his shoulder while he was climbing.
He didn't have a pistol. He said that sow would go over and check on the piglet, then come back and butt the tree, and the tree would wave back and forth.
Horace said the sow kept him up there for two hours, before she gathered up her baby and walked off into the swamp.0 -
AR won't be enough gun... good excuse to go buy a FAL, G3/91, M14, AR10, etc. though 0 -
