Caliber isn't important, it is all about bullet construction and shot placement. Pigs aren't anywhere near as skittish as deer, you can stalk CLOSE to hogs.
If your 5.56mm AR will shoot MOA with the Heavy 69grn and up hunting bullets you can wait patiently for that side-on, head shot, and put them down consistantly. You just have to be more patient and pick your shot much more carefully.
A .270 is great, just make sure you choose a big, heavy bullet/projectile made for DEEP penetration on large or dangerous game. A soft point should get the job done, a fused core might work better, but a nosler partion bullet is perhaps the best design.
Pigs are TOUGH, but I can usually get within 50 yards, and take my time setting up my shot.0 -
If you really want to know about hog hunting go to www.dixieslugs.com Mr. Gates has forgotten more about ammunition and hog hunting than half of us put together will ever know.
Best Regards:)

Very true, especially if you can hunt them when it is not deer season. They get skittish hearing all the shots of the deer hunters.
When we were scouting the woods a week or two before deer season it was not unusual to walk right up on a pack of 10 or 12 hogs. You could walk right up within 40 yards of 'em.0 -
In east Texas we like to trap them, put in a well constructed pen and fatten them up. When the time comes to kill one, my .22 mag has never let me down. Right between the eyes.[;)] 0
