All the time, 280, all the time. And those who get stung, deserve it.

The biggest joke was the window salesman that told me my house was higher than my neighbors so he would cut me a big break on my windows because all my neighbors would see my house and buy new windows from him too.

BTW: I installed all my own windows for under $3000 (he wanted $10k).

friggin' gypsies. There is a family known for this type of shenanigan around these parts. Honest to Gawd gypsies. There MO is asphalt driveways. Had one pull into my gravel drive a few years ago offering to pave. I looked at him and said I knew who he was. He JUMPED back in his truck and took off.

...The job that they just did is always for "Mr. (something)" down the road. I always tell them that, "Sure I know him, let me give him a call to ask about your work." They're gone in seconds.
...I had one last week, selling meat and seafood out of a pickup truck. Riiiiight. I'm gonna trust that alright.

Can someone please seal my driveway for me.

I really don't think he meant the (somewhat confused) elderly. I imagine he was thinking about someone with all there mental faculties.

    I hope.

I'd say something like, "No, thanks. I don't need my driveway sealed. They just attracts sharks."

Being somewhat elderly himself and being somewhat impatient Clouder sometimes makes sweeping statements that take in more country side than he really intended. He was trying to say that those victims of con men who believe thay are getting a steal on stolen goods, or perhaps left overs already paid for once, deseve to be fleeced because they are greedy and not exactly honest themeslves. I tend to agree, but unfortunately it is usually the desperate or befuddled that are preyed upon by such crooks.

Knew a guy several years ago who was approached at a car wash with the offer of purchasing a name brand/still-sealed-in-the-factory-carton home stereo system. The guy told him he'd stole a bunch of them directly off the freight cars at the RR yard and would sell him one for pennies on the dollar of it's market value. He actually ended up buying himself a nicely packaged box of bricks. It P'd me off that the numb-nuts had the gall to whine about getting ripped off.

Bravo to the thief. Serves the guy right.

I get approached rather frequently to purchase "discounted" items out of the back of people's vehicles. I think it is because I'm out and about while others are working. Either way, I've never even had the desire to buy something "hot" off the market... for two reasons:

    1. It just isn't right to knowingly purchase stolen property; and,
    2. I know I'd get caught and made an example of.

Had a guy at a gas station ask me if I were interested in a good deal on electronics, just happened to have some in his trunk. I told him I would be very interested in looking to see if my stolen stero system was in his trunk. He jumped back in the car and left without buying gas.

I have talked with a gang of victims of such a con, and Txs is only partly right. Most cons do depend on the greed of the victim to work, but not all. Some of these elderly are conned into believing that the driveway extension, driveway sealing, roof repair, etc, is required by city code, and they have to get it done soon to avoid paying penalties. The con man just happens to have just what is needed to complete the job at a reduced cost to do the old person a favor.

I've heard that some of these "travelers" will claim that they're willing to screw their employer on a legitimate job out of some supplies for YOUR benefit, and it this case, yeah, I would agree you deserve what you get, but if it were really some left over material, I fail to see where there would be any immorality involved. Having seen the movie Traveler, however, I am aware I would just be getting a very temporary waste oil coating on my driveway.

When we were paving streets and wound up with extra asphalt we would ask the nice folks (anyone who did not call the cops on us for starting work at 5 am) and overlay their drives. We got some mighty fine pies and cookies for just being nice with waste material.

Had a freezer in the back? Right? Some of those are actually legitimately licensed with the local authoritys.(peddlers and hawkers license, usually about $5) The catch is that the load thaws during the day and they refreeze it by plugging in at whatever motel they are staying at at night. (if they remember)
You get what you pay for!
