old saying, "to be con'ed, you must have a little larceny in you yourself."

the bible says, " a fool and his money shall soon part."

older folks are from a generation that was taught to TRUST fellow man. granted, con's are in every generation....but for the most part our seniors are sometimes too tired to engage the alert mechanizms, and they drop their guard. thats all it takes.

    cons know this.

was time where a mans word meant something. you did what you said you would do. its getting rarer every day.

The driveway sealing gypsies visited me oncesome years back. I told them - Great, sounds like a good deal and the driveway sure needs it.

When they were finished and looking for money I said here's the landlord's phone number, give him a call.

Landlord never heard from them. [:D]

It was not uncommon in delaware in my neighbor hood to have a local guy, drive through the neighbor hood and seal driveways, for about 70-100 bucks, was that a bad deal? Im talking about where they spray the black stuff on there and you cant walk on it for 2 days. i always thought it looked much better when they were done.

quote:Had a freezer in the back? Right? Some of those are actually legitimately licensed with the local authoritys.(peddlers and hawkers license, usually about $5) The catch is that the load thaws during the day and they refreeze it by plugging in at whatever motel they are staying at at night. (if they remember)

    ?????

My ex-brother-in-law makes a good living selling meat out of a freezer in the back of a truck. Company truck. He plugs it in when he comes back to the office after his shift. When he is on the road, he puts dry ice in the freezer to keep the meat frozen. Meat sellers that have showed up at my house did the same thing. I just don't buy meat from them because it isn't the bargain it is represented to be.

    .280 Freak,

So, how much did you wind up paying the guy to seal your driveway before you realized you got ripped off?

...The meat/seafood sellers always have out of state plates and no name on the truck. Also, I doubt that they have a peddler's license, as they never work the streets in town, only the country roads.
...There's a sausage/jerky/cheese guy that works the gun shows. He's very liberal with samples of whatever he has and takes some pride in his products.....always cold, and always wears latex gloves. He has some good stuff.

I've got to call "horse-apples" on most of this thread!

(per my dictionary) FRAUD - the crime of decieving for monetary gain.

The proper way to handle any such encounter or offer for a good deal that seems just too good to be true is discuss the goods or service long enough to note the person's license plate. Ask for a business card or address so you can call after you think about it over night.
Call your local police department &/or the consumer protection division of your state's Attorney General Office.

Stealing is stealing. My Bible says "thou shalt not steal" It doesn't say it's OK as long you don't agree with the person's charachter or creed. How far can you go to justify it because you don't like or don't agree with the victim?

By reporting such suspicious business propositions you will hopefully save one of your neighbors from being victimized. You will also be doing the right thing by making the con artist's job harder & more risky.

The biggest joke was the window salesman that told me my house was higher than my neighbors so he would cut me a big break on my windows because all my neighbors would see my house and buy new windows from him too.

BTW: I installed all my own windows for under $3000 (he wanted $10k).

Speaking of windows...Got a phone call one day:
She Hello Mr. Ripley 16, can you tell me what kind of windows you have...wood or metal?

Me Hmmmm. Hold on I'll go check. ( I secretly go do something worthwhile for a few minutes).

Me Well I checked, and all my windows are made of glass.[:o)]

She HaHa hahahahahahah (I hung up)[:D]

    true story.
