    DITTO.
BTW: My nephew is in the USMC and will deploy to Iraq in Sept. I know a couple of guys who have already been over and came back. And I asked them if there was anything that a soldier might need or find useful that the military doesn't provide. I was thinking along the lines of maybe a knife like the USMC Ka-Bar. The answer I got was a multi tool such as the Leathermans. So I got him one. (black instead of shiney chrome) Just something to consider.

    Calamity -

Many years ago I graduated from high school with no real vision of a career and a stubborn negative attitude about pursuing a college diploma. I couldn't accept money from my folks and I certainly wasn't going to take out a loan to pay ultra liberal professors to teach me what I didn't wish to be taught. (This has now held true for almost six decades.)

So I (probably stupidly) signed up for the Marines. Vietnam was in full bloom at the time and the services needed young men. Much to my amazement I was rejected because of a heart murmur that I had been unaware of. Given the times and the prosecution of the war, this may well have saved my life.

Still, today, I would gladly have served rather than being forced into enduring college life. Please understand... I'm not a critic of those who choose the college path. I merely believe that there are other ways more suitable for some of us.

Please forward my thanks to your son. Tell him there are folks who understand and support him in his decision.

For your benefit... There will be dangers, but danger is everywhere. The young man will probably be uncomfortable at times. Likely not life-threateningly uncomfortable, but certainly not enjoyable. Chances are that when this phase of life is done your son will arrive home with a lot of experience(s) under his belt. Some bad, but most good.

As much as this may hurt right now, I expect that you'll be proud of your son and pleased with the result of his decision. He'll come home with a much better understanding of the real world than could ever be taught by a college professor... And who's to say that he won't choose the college path after this?

    Best,

Thanks to you and your son, and may God bless and keep him.

My boy has been in Iraq for about 9 months. He is in convoy security, and his company guards truck convoys moving stuff from place to place. Their main job is not to seek and destroy the enemy, so if they draw fire while underway, they do not stop and engage. They return fire and keep moving. Even so, as of May, in the last official newsletter, it was reported that his company had been engaged in 10 firefights and 23 IED incidents with no fatalities and only one casualty serious enough for evacuation.

I know they are doing a necessary job, and I support President Bush's decision to keep our boys there, but I will be ever so relieved when the job is over and they all come home.

Well I will be taking my 18 year old son to the local recruiting office today. He leaves for Fort Benning tommorrow. He wants to be deployed to Iraq as soon as he is out of school (A.I.T.). I have always been supportive of the war. I guess we'll see how I hold up now that my son is going over there. I'm proud of him but I wish he would have went to college instead.

I know what you are going through, as my youngest went to Ft Benning about a year and a half ago. He just got back from a year in S. Korea, and will probably be going to the sand box in a few months.

Just be supportive, and you will be amazed at the changes in him in just a short amount of time.

He'll be a better man for it, it's just a little rough on the parents. He'll make it back calamity, the vast majority do.

I wish him strength and Godspeed.
