Deer rifle ?
Ive been deer hunting with an old Russian SKS-45 for awhile now and want to get a decent scoped rifle in either .270 or .308.
Would like to hear some ideas on what your choice in a deer rifle is.[:)]

Can't go wrong with 30-06. 0 -
I use a Remington 760 Gamemaster in .30-06. Ammo of choice is reloads: Hornady 180gr round nose and 53gr of IMR 4350. 0 -
I prefer the 308 it has a number of bullet choices, low recoil and in my area the deer are not to big so it doesn't destroy the meat as bad as the 270 does. 0 -
Here in Maine, the deer rifle most often used, but, seldom seen, is a cheap Marlin 22 with a maglite 0 -
The .270 is a great deer cartridge. Depenging on encounter distance and the size of the deer it might do more damage than you want. The 06 is much more versitile. If you have future plans to hunt bear, elk , or even moose the 06 is the way to go. I say go with the .270 so you can but a new gun later. 0 -

What elkoholic said....also, I've killed umpteen muleys, blacktails and whitails with my .25/06. You can use just about anything you want. Just practice and get proficient with it and place your bullet where you want it............the first time.

Do any of you have any experience with Browning medallion A-bolts or the Beretta Tikka? Kinda been eyeing them lately.0 -
The 257 Roberts gets plenty of raves, along with a 7mm-08, 7mm mag. The 270, 308, and 30-06 are tried and true rounds, none of which will ever let you down.
A remington 700 or RugerM77 in any of those calibers will suit you just fine.0 -

I have a older Tikka M695 in .300 Mag and I love it. Very accurate right out of the box and extremely smooth action. Only downside is that they are a little heavy, but I see that they now make a "Lite" model that you could look into as well.0 -
Remington 700 in 270! ...700 out of the box is "normally" the most accurate production weapon. And in 270 a real flat shooter out to long ranges ...unlike the rainbow effect on the 308. My $0.02 anyway! Good Luck! 0 -
For best price and accuracy go with a Savage accutrigger model. For great accuracy and beauty go with a Browning. 0 -

CZ 308 has a set trigger and can be a tack driver, I use it in a 3006 not to bad of price. [:D][8D][^][8] 0 -
Take your time picking the cal. you want, look at ALL the factors, range, power, recoil, ect.
Compare all the info you can get your hands on.
Then take a trip to your local range & talk with & maybe even shoot some of the guys weapons & see what you think.
Then last & most important, find a quality rifle maker & have a custom built rifle made that fits you. You will then have a treasure you can own - pass down or whatever the rest of your life. & take it from me, "there is nothing like owning & shooting a Fine custom built rifle"

you can get them not ported too, I think.
150grn factory ammo, 3 shot 1" and less groups at 100 yds.
If you want to go w/a larger grn. round, no need to sight in after the change...just dial in the B.O.S.S. for the weight you changed to (2 minutes or less)...and you will still be zeroed. I checked this with the 4 different weight rounds I use, and zero did not change.
Love the Medallion...and B.O.S.S., works for me...a little loud, but if you hit what your aiming at, who cares.
Takes about half the recoil out too. I dont mind recoil,and dont think the 06 has much to begin with...but dont hurt either...[;)]

If this gun is specifically to used for deer I would suggest the Ruger all weather Ultra light. It only has a 20 inch barrel & comes in 243 270 or 30.06. You will come to appreciate a lighter gun when your out lugging it around. I have one in 243 & its more than enough to take down any deer. While i agree the accuracy of the 308 may be superior how far away will you typically shoot a deer? If your gun can shoot on a pie plate consistantly at 200 yards you can sure hit a deers vitals. 0 -

I would look at Savage if you want to get by cheaply. Great rifle for a low price. Add the 30-06 to your list.0 -
I was wondering how that BOSS system works.Thats really got me interested now.Looks like a pretty heavy rifle though.
Thanks for all the ideas yall,I think Iam going to stick with something in .270,the 06 seems to do alot of damage to them smaller deer.My brother got one last year with his 06 and pretty much field dressed it all in one shot.Probably doesnt help that he was using fail safes.quote:Originally posted by Bloviator

I'm shooting just about flat at 200 yards w/ 150 grain VitalShok. .308 has no real "rainbow effect" comparitively speaking.0 -
The BOSS (Ballistic Optimizing Shooting System) works wonderfully. With that said, it will deafen you. You probably won't be able to see the difference it makes, because the weapon is a lot more accurate than the shooter. If it's recoil you want to tame with the BOSS, get a Limbsaver recoil pad. Only $30 installed and takes out half the recoil. Get a Savage and get a good stock for it. 0 -

Sniper I ran across in Nam had a Rem 700 in 30-06 w/190 gr. SPBT bullets! ...But SG was asking about deer rifles. Now I do think the .308 is a good round! I have one in a Ruger 77v. I use it to put BIG bullets down range for silhouette shooting. But for deer ... .270 no if ands or butt!0 -

Don't overlook the Remington 700 XCR in your caliber of choice. I haven't put a scope on mine yet so I haven't test fired it yet. I've been told by others that they have gotten MOA or better groups with factory ammo in that gun.0 -
For deer and smaller sized game take a look at a rem 700 in 6mm rem. 0 -

there are to many great calibers out there to limit yourself to just these 2 but if you must then what B17 said. My old man was a marine corp. sniper . he won't shoot anything but the 308
I on hand will only use a 300 win mag. for anything that has hair on it.[:D]0 -
Depends, maybe I want to take my Dad's old 30-06. No, how about the M77 heavy barrel .243? Why not the wife's 7400 in .308, hhhmmmmm? The Mark X .300 Win mag? The Colt AR 5.56? The Colt AR 7.62x39? The Remington 700 heavy barrel .308? The Remington heavy barrel 22-250? The Remington 700 .270? One of the many shotguns in the safe or maybe even one of the scoped handguns. I know, the Ruger .44 carbine. Yeah, that's it. That's just a few that come to mind quickly. See, sometimes it decisions everywhere. My brother-in-law says the best part about coming down to SC and hunting with me is getting in the safe and playing the night before. 0
