school uniforms
Ok My girls brought home a letter asking what we as parents thought about having our kids wearing school uniforms.
Myself as a child in the 3&4 grade I had to wear them and I dont like the ideal of my kidds having to.
What is everyones take on it.

Is it a private or public school? Clearly, an argument can be made for some sort of dress code at least. 0 -
In Hustsville Texas, all of ours were white with black horiontal stripes.

if as adults we did things because as children we did or didn't like them, we would all stay up at night, and have cake and ice cream for dinner
it has it's pros and cons, i bet it would be a heck of allot cheaper on school clothes, and keep those damn boxers from showing, and the thought process behind public schools going to uniforms is questionable but still understandable0 -
I wore a uniform and still don't see what it's supposed to accomplish. Dress codes on the other hand should be enforced. 0 -
I don't like them. Makes the kids look like they are in prison or something, all dressed alike. Just a sensible dress code takes care of any problems. Here in our schools there is no skirts above mid-thigh,low cut tops, or halter tops for girls. For boys there is no showing of underwear at all, no sleeveless shirts, no T-shirts with drug words or swear words. No gang related symbols for either sex. We have no problems at all. 0 -
My daughter wears a uniform. She will tell you that she hated it in the beginning but now, at 12, loves it because she does not have the normal pressures that other kids have on them about clothes. I think its great. It is alot cheaper, and she never has to wonder what she is wearing. 0 -

its a public school.

I agree also but what about them having there on style and identy.
I know the girls love to dress up and it makes them feel good about themselfs

I wore uniforms from 1st grade through high school, I see nothing wrong with it. If it's a public school, good luck enforcing it. If it is a private school, it will work. It sure made getting ready in the morning alot easier. 0 -
I agree with gagirl. Uniforms also prevent kids from stratifying by clothing clique or status. They allow children to channel their energies in creative pursuits which are more intellectually challenging.
If you believe that uniforms are not good for them, ask yourself why they should wear uniforms for sports, or in the Armed Services and Air Force.
I'm a big supporter of school uniforms.

Pro: Don't have to do as much school clothes shopping.
Con: uniforms are just another tool used by the educational establishment to punish individuality, force conformity, strangle creativity, reward mediocrity and in general pound the square pegs of individual impulses into the round holes of bureaucratic generalities.0 -
Two important practical questions which were not asked:
what is your geographical location?
woudl uniform jackets be required or would one wear their own choice of outdoor clothing?
Odds are whatever the school picked for winter uniform would be perfectly inadequate for anything colder than early fall/late spring.
Or they would pick "north face" and then everyone would look like degenerate fart boys [xx(]0 -

while me and you may keep our children's style and identity pretty civil, have you seen some of these kids lately?, and while a dress code sounds pretty good, imagine the steps to enforce it, i would rather that energy put to good use, as the school systems are strapped for resources as it is

Have you ever been to a school to see the different outfits the kids wear? The same style of baggy jeans, the same style of shirt, the same style of shoes, the same basic hair cut. To be popular these kids all dress in the same basic outfit now, so to put them into a uniform would just be changing one outfit into another. Then at lest they would look good.0 -
Makes for good sheeple. A better idea that encompases both sides may be to offer 4 or 5 "uniforms". That way some choice is
still available but some conformity as also achieved.0 -

I would suggest what children need is parenting, but those same parents insist their crack babies be mainstreamed so that they do not have to keep them at home all day, so my suggestion is pretty hopeless.

I support school uniforms. I wore a uniform from 5th - 9th grade and it was so much better. The funny thing is that the people opposed to them have never worn one before. Parents like them better too. Cuts the cost of clothing dramatically.
Some people say it doesnt allow a student to "express themself". I disagree. I believe anyone who expresses themself with their clothing is rather weak and superficial. The way you truely express yourself is through character, achievment and personality.
As a side note - almost every school in Australia wears uniforms, they love it.0 -
as a parent of 2 teenage girls i love/hate the uniform policies here it is easier and cheaper to shop and no deciding what they are going to wear but on the other hand they keep changing it every year on yr they had to have brown shoes the next they had to be black/white penny loafers so it has its pro and cons my 2 don't care one way or another as long as they have their dress clothes away from school 0 -
I also agree with Nadine.
Bringing uniforms into a school relieves the peer pressure set by the "in" crowd on the other students. They will spend less time worrying about their outfit and wanting to wear the things that the other student wears, and lets them concentrate on the more important items....studying, lessons, homework, etc.
Less money spent on clothes before the school year and less of a hassle dragging them to the mall/store to try on clothes.
Kids also don't have to worry about what they are wearing each and every morning.
I remember hearing the idea in my schools and hated the idea. Now I see how it would come in handy and useful.0 -

I so VERY VERY WISH my three had to wear uniforms. I wouldn't have to worry over my 15 yr old girl "mooning" anyone because she bent over in the jeans she has borrowed from her best friend......somehow wearing other people's clothes home is not unusual for this bunch! 0 -
If the idea behind a uniform is to blur the line between the poor and better off families, all the uniform does is draw attention form the clothes themselves to the shoes the students are wearing. This is coming form experience. !st through 4th grade I attended a Catholic School and we had uniforms. Instead of getting made fun of for what kind of jeans we wore, my siblings and me were ridiculed for our shoes. Uniforms don't do any good unless you're LEO, Military, or in prison. 0 -

I wouldn't like my kids to wear uniforms. The school system is already trying to interfere with my parenting in every damn way they can already. I'm sick of their intrusuion already and don't need more of it. I bet however my kids will never wear this lowcut shirt or those baggy pants or short skirts. They know better then to even try.
On the positive side though it would cut down on some of the clothing cost. Still would have to buy clothing for no school hours though so it wouldn't make it all that much cheaper.0 -

This may be true for public schools, but my experience, including my own two son's education is that this is one of many reason kids in private school do much better overall.
No time is wasted dealing with clothing issues, worries about name brands, poorer kids not getting teased etc.
School should be a time a learing, not a fashion show. Kids can wear whatever they want to when not in school. It sets a tone that has been lost in our educational system.0 -
Our school dress code was business attire. Suits and ties of business taste. You could where any suit you want. On Thursday was color day which everyone had to wear the identical blazer, gray slacks and school tie. Girls were required to wear business suit with skirts of certain length. I am not 100% sure on their exact requirements.
Even with such a dress code there were always those who pushed the limits with fish ties or girls wearing garters and stockings.0 -

Yea but since Schools are not capable of adapting to allow high performers to succeed or removing disruptive students we cant rely on them to develop our children for us. Go for the uniforms and the advantages our school systems can't provide excellence to over weigh the cons Heck just look at my english [:D][}:)]0 -

The elementary school my daughter attends is looking into uniforms. I am on the committee researching it. After what I have read from my research, I am all for them. The big problem at our school is that the teachers are AGAINST them! We decided right off the bat that the teachers would have a "uniform" also. You should see some of the things these young teachers wear! Things I wouldn't let my daughter out of the house in. And if they aren't wearing something suggestive, they are wearing denim shorts and t-shirts. When I was in school, teachers dressed like professionals. I think if we can corral our teachers, the parents will come on-line fairly quickly. 0
