sex offender , what to do ?
We have a sex offender living about 1/2 mile of us. Just how much should I tell my daughter about him? Is it better to just make her understand that he is a bad person and to never be around him ? He is now going to church. I was told he asked God to forgive him and now he is a different person. I know from the state web site he has been jailed 3 times, for serious crimes against children.
So how should I handle this with a 9 year old daughter? Any ideas or suggestions?

If he's been popped three times, he's not a different person now. They don't change. Warn her. 0 -
Warn her to stay away from him.
Maybe he has changed but I wouldn't put my money (or my daughter's safety) on that bet.0 -

That's a tough one. I have an 8 year girl and we just her that so and so did some very bad things and to stay away. We haven't even got close to the birds and the bees talk so she wouldn't understand what a sexual offender is anyway. That guy might be reformed for now but they usually re-offend. We had a neighbor that I used to get firewood from that was on the sexual offender list. He spent time in prison for his first offense, got "treatment" only to do it all over again last year. He's back in prison. He had a wife and 3 kids (he didn't molest his kids). Real nice guy until I found out what he did. 0 -

+1 , of course you do not have to go into details, he probably has not changed he is just afraid of getting caught, which in my opinion makes him more dangerous0 -

Definitely explain to your daughter that this man is to be avoided. I don't have a clue how to explain the reasoning to her.0 -

Many shrinks admit sexual offenders are people they don't have hardly any chance of helping. You know it's serious if a shrink admits that and that they won't be changing 9 times out of 10.
I don't see the problem though unless you let your daughter run wide open. My daughters only leave my sight when they are in their mothers sight. They don't go anywhere alone.
Sucks since I was able to have free roam when I was a kid, but you just can't do that in this day and age. [:(]0 -
my suggestion?
Tell your daughter everything about the guy. Tell her to stay away. Show her a photo of him.
Tell her that if he even says, "Hello" to her, that she should drop everything and tell you so that you can call the cops.0 -

I know what you mean. When I was a kid, my friends and I would roam all over our small town in the summer. Wouldn't come home til a half hour after dark. In fact, mom would usually run us out of the house to get us out of her hair. I never once remember anyone making untoward moves around us. Were there sexual predators around then? Probably so, but everyone watched out for everyone's kids. Now, I freak out when the grandkids go out of sight in the store.0 -

We are pretty frank with our 9 y/o daughter. We do not go into specifics, but she gets the idea. She also knows that should the need ever arise, she is to fight to the death clawing the guys eyes out, etc...that is if there's not a gun nearby that she can pick up and shoot the meanie with.0 -
Show her what Monster's really look like. Make it so when she see's him she's scared of him and runs and screams. 0 -
Make sure to tell your daughter and keep an eye on him and her. Sex offenders don't change.
And this offender can ask God to forgive him all he wants, but he hasn't asked for or gotten forgiveness from the rest of us, so he'd better watch himself.
He tries for a fourth strike, I say shoot him and save the tax payers the cost of incarcerating him.0 -
I think you could explain the situation reasonably enough without going into details. Keep it simple. Finding out like you have means you have won half the battle. Now you just need to talk to her about him and be cautious. With the simple knowledge and an ounce of prevention, you've probably protected her already.
I'd bet in most cases that happen, the offender is unknown, and the kids have no warning.
Probably should let the pastor of that church know about this also. Send an e-mail to him at least. I don't think anybody there would be comfortable bringing their young daughters there every Sunday with him around. They can't change.
Keep her on a short leash if that's possible.
I would not confront him unless you are confronted. All you're going to do is put you and your family in the fore-front of his mind. You'd just be drawing attention. Stay alert.0 -
Why not lay your concerns on the mayor, council and sheriff.
They might lean on this jerk and scare him.
If he's widely identified he might want to move.0 -
IF, he/she is a geniune nasty case, a preditor..
take it in turns with the neighbours to beat him/her ,HARD.. regular after dark...this will change his perseption of the night & keep the MF in doors..
prison is costly, TO US...keep him/her out & make him/her sufer!![;)]
if it don't help him/her...it will others think twice about following the route !!0
