What is the best scope for a 300 win mag.

i have a friend who is as accomplished a hunter as anybody and he contends a $150 scope will perform {under the same conditions} as a $500 scope. he says that a tasco 3x9 or bushnell 3x9 is just as good as a leupold or redield. i thinks he's wrong but tell me why?

What scope would fit on a Rem. 700 PSS, and how do I know what scope mounts or rings to put on?

I know almost nothing about mounting scopes what parts I need and how to find out what size I need, so I need help.

Question: which would you want for a .308 on an AR platform? A Weaver Grand Slam 3-10 by 40 1/10 Mil/Mildot OR

    a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 1/8 moa MilDot

Both at Midway in the $300 to $350 range. Can't afford better now.

Went to the ranges yesterday and now
kind of believe the sight picture:
    clarity and realized magnification is
better with my busnell 3200 5-15
    than with my leupold 6-18

    Leupold Rifelman 4-12X44

I picked mine up for $250ish shipped from Cabelas. [;)] Do a search for them. You can get them for around $240ish.

Leupold quality at a wal-mart price.

Leupold Vari-X III...Nikons are not bad for the money, if you are looking for something cheaper. I'm not a fan of Burris. I've seen too many of their reticles come loose.

    Depends on how much money....

0-$75 - Bushnell or Barska. The latter being my choice.

    76-150 - Nikon, Sightron, Leupold

    151 - 500 - Burris, Leupold

    501+ - Kahles, Nightforce

It all depends on what you want to do with it. You do not need a $1000 scope to shoot paper targets at 100 yards. I also wouldn't go on a dream hunt for Yukon Moose with a $100 scope. Most of my target rifles have eather Tasco or Simmons scopes on them. My hunting rifles all have Leupold and my handguns all wear Burris.

I have tried ALL of the cheap/cheaper scopes.

For the money, you cannot beat a Nikko Stirling - distributed by Legacy International in the states.

6-24x56, mildots, side parallax adjustment, quick eye focus, 30 mm tube...and suggested retail of $229!

    Leupold.
I would say Sightron is another good choice for your money.

For low dollar scopes I have had good luck with NcStar.

But like was said earlier I would go better for a good hunting scope.

I dream of the day when I can afford put a Zeiss on my Garand. In the real world, I've never had any problems with the Bushnell Sportview line of scopes. I've also heard good things about BSA, but I can't support any of that.

Leupold. The image crispness between even a VX-I and most other comparable ($200 or so) scopes is noticeable.

My favorite, however, is Swarovski. But that's a whole 'nuther price range.

OK, now that we know what your going to do with it there are a few other questions to answer:
    Where do you hunt?
What are the tempature extreams you will hunt in?
What is the shortest and longest range you will be shooting?
What is your exact budget for a scope?
Give us a few more details and we'll give you the exact model to look at, we will not all agree on the scope but it'll give you something to look at.

Match the price of the gun to get the scope for that gun.
Schmidt & Bender is the best then they go down hill from there.

As you do have a 300 Mag I would say a decent scope is in order and it needs to have a fair amount of magnification to back up the capabilities of the cartridge. I would say 3 to 4 power on the low end and 12 to 14 power on the high end with at least a 40mm adjustable objective. Check these out:

I must say that after looking at the choices in your price range that it would be a crying shame to put a cheep scope on a Weatherby, save up another $200 and get something nice (IMHO)

For what money? You get crap for under $100. Save your nickles and buy a Burris Signature Select.
