    Food question.

Do you guys/girls here prefer sweet potatoes or yams?

The yams you buy at the grocery store are sweet potatoes. Yams are an African and South American vegetable and rarely seen in the United States. Calling sweet potatoes yams is a marketing device thought up by some Yankee.

To answer your question, I'd rather eat a road kill skunk than either one of them.

I always thought yams and sweet potatoes were about the same thing, and I never cared for them.

Yams are almost white in color and usually larger that sweet potatoes, at least ones I have seen. Because the taste is similar, early Africans called them Yams. Sweet potatoes can be prepared in several ways. I suspect that most people think they have tried them have eaten some of the canned ones and believe me I won't eat those. But I'm sorry for you if you haven't eaten a home made pie, or candied with pecans and brown sugar, or fried, or chips or just baked. I live in NC, and I believe we are the top producing state, so having them around is routine. A guy moved here from up North once, and bugged the local grocer constantly wanting "yams". Every time he walked down the street people would say "Here comes that yam yankee".

I prefer a baked sweet potato to a "white" potato any day, especially with some good BBQ yum yum ![:p]

I've always thought 'yams' are orange inside w/ a brownish skin while 'sweet potatoes' are white inside w/ a light brown skin.

    nonetheless: >
Candied I do prefer 'yams' with brown sugar and butter. [:p]

Sweet potatoes I think are better for home made fries if you go that route. [:p]

I'm with BR. I love a good ol' sweet tater just baked, sliced open with a big hunk of butter (REAL butter) thrown on it. Can't do the brown sugar, but would if I could! Also like sweet tater pie (tastes similar to pumpkin).

    Sweet Potato Pie = YUM!!!

Sweet Potato with pineapple, brown sugar and marshmallows = FU FU Girl Food - EEEWWWW

Yukon Golds = heavenly, in nearly any recipe...Whenever I go up to the Canadian Border to do my MinuteMan Duties, I always buy Yukon Golds from the farmer up there - $5.00 for a 40 pound sack of 'em!
Neighbors and friends gather when I return, for their share!

I like what are locally called "Jerseys". They look like Sweet potatoes, but are white inside. (Ok, light yellow). This a yam? Whatever it is I prefer it but only occasionally for any of them.

Its OK to eat either. I prefer sweet taters. Yams were raised in the south before the civil war for hog feed, when the yankees came they were fed yams cus they were thought of as hogs. Yankees still do not know the difference.

Love a baked sweet potato with butter![:p]
Not much for the "candied" type, as I am not a sweet tooth person.
As weird as it seems, sweet potatos are better for a diabetic, than a "white" potato!
I will admit that it took me a long time to try a baked sweet potato, as it sounded gross, but now I like em!

Opposite colorwise. Sweet potatoes are very high in beta carotine, besides being delicious, they are actually good for you.

It is now thought that the Inca "City" of Machu Picchu was in actuality an Agricultureal experimental station, for testing the growth of sweet potatoes at different elevations. The Incas grew over 200 varieties of sweet potatoes.
