K&N air Filters, whats the Truth
I was just wondering what anybodies thoughts were on a K&N air filter. I have a 06 Monte Carlo SS, and the guy told me told me it would boost HP by 13. Are these things worth the 50 bucks

The entire system for my Tundra cost me about $300. It boosted my HP and increased MPG as well. 0 -
The only thing you may notice would be a fuel mileage boost with just a filter.
They say HP increases of less than 10% are not noticeable. I know that SS pushes more than 130HP.
On a different note. I installed a Cold Air Induction system on my Miata along with a full Borla Exhaust...Bumped it up to 180HP and an awesome exhaust note.
A full Induction kit will give you a noticeable boost and a nice deep growl. Spend the extra cash on one.0 -
i put in a fram air hog they are slightly more expensive but you wont have to buy a new one you just clean it. 0 -

Same thing as a K&N, you clean it every 12-15k miles, and re-oil it.0 -

Even if they don't boost horsepower that much, the reusability of them will save you money in the long run. 0 -

Get the K&N, you won't regret it. They look a bit expensive at first but they will save you big money in the long run. I'll use myself as a example. I drive 75,000 miles a year and I need to change my air filter evey 25,000 miles. I would be spending $60 per year on airfilters at $20 each. A K&N for my van is $50 and I need to clean it every 100,000 miles. So now I only have to work on the van every 1 1/2 years and that is just to pull out the filter and clean it. Did I mention K&N has a 1,000,000 mile warentee. 0 -
98K on an 03 GMC sierra.K&N put on when it was new.Only problem is the oil gets on the mass air flow sensor and messes up the idle circuit.Pretty easy fix but was a problem stalling at lights.Don't over oil and it's all good.If you want to see the greatest benifit you have to do the exhaust as well.It does little good to get air in if it can't get out 0 -
The addition of a K&N filter and a set of pipes on a Harley can add 8-12 HP! Thats one heck of a power gain! 15-18%
Once you allow the engine to breathe air in and exhaust gas out in an efficent manner it rewards you with a nice kick in the pants when you hit the gas![^]0 -
I had a K&N filter, K&N exhaust system, and a Mopar air induction kit on my Dakota, and that thing had all sorts of power. If you're going to do it, do it all. Makes a big difference. 0 -
I agree on the exaust as well.
I do not have the K&N exaust, I have a full flowmaster exaust on mine. It has great performance and a nice deep sound to it.0 -

The filter costs $50. I'm betting a disposable filter will run you $15-$20 bucks. So really even if you see no improvement in performance or fuel economy, In maybe a year it will pay for itself. I clean my K&N every ten thousand miles or so. I always check it whenever i change the oil, when I do clean it my car pulls noticably harder than after it was dirty.
Worth the money. I would be shocked if you gained 13 WHP though.0 -
K&N on my cars has given a noticible mileage increase. You can reach a point of economical diminishing returns when you start doing exhaust systems, unless power is the goal.

Consider also that you just clean & reoil 'em and keep using them. Less waste to teh environment, easy enough to do that you'll do it relatively often. I use 'em on my 356 with Weber 44 IDF carbs. 0 -

I had the same system on my '94 Dakota (5.2L V-8) that I bought new... it ran great, and it got very decent fuel economy (at least when I didn't have my foot in it[:D]). I sold the truck to a friend of mine almost 11-years after I bought it (155K miles), and he is still driving it... and loves the performance[^]0 -

I put an Airaid system, nearly identical to the K&N Filtercharger, on my truck. Noticed zero change. Only difference is I save money not buying disposable filters. 0 -

192,000 miles on mine....cleaned ONCE.....No registered airflow restriction on my diesel. it is well worth the coin. Just do NOT over clean it and follow the instructions when you do. 0 -

Zulu7, There are parts available for your car, but your going to have to look hard to find them. Most of the performance parts for the engine can be found on parts for mustangs and ford trucks with the same motor. Exhaust is the easy one as any muffler shop can bend up a set of pipes for you, then all you need is a set of flowmasters.
Check online, your car is basically the same as the Crown Vic and there are people that buy the old cop cars to fix up. There is a guy in Upland, CA that buys old cop caprices and turns them into Impala SS clones, so I'm sure there is someone out there that does similar work for the CV/Grand Marquee.0 -
i used to work for autozone. i sold those things in batches to some garages. i never bought the one for my 92 saturn sl 2 but boy did i wanna. most popular i sold were for tuners, toyota, honda, mitsubishi.
used to have an 89 ford festiva. until it died. i wanted to get the cai, flowmasters, headers and nitrous. too bad i blew the block. oil pump failed. i sent a push rod through it. good little car too. may marylin rest in pieces.0 -
GM ran a test on all after market air filters a while back you might find this interesting.K&N was on the bottom of the list (worst performance) Search air filter testing on computer.
I have K&N filters on the three vehicles that I have on the road. I think they make a huge difference in performance and milage, especially the 355 carbed chevy motor. Their claim is 15-20 HP and I believe it.The other two are baby northstar v-8 and 3.7 Jeep motor, the noise leval is noticable when you put your foot in it,I for one enjoy this part as well as the increased milage.
I will continue to suport K&N products.

Bought one just today and installed in a 2005 Sierra 1500 4x4. Been driving to Florida about 3 times a year pulling a trailer. I think I will give it a good test. I'll keep you updated. Bshooter 0 -

Just thought I would let you know what I heard from a GMC mechanic about these air filters. He said there was a posting put out to all GMC dealerships that too much oil on these filters will affect some of the sensors in the system. I am assuming he was talking about the O2 sensors. I guess when they are new they have the correct amount of oil on them but when the owner cleans and re-oils them, this is when the problem comes in. So beware, make sure you clean and oil them by the book. Best of luck. Bshooter 0
