Dell Computers -- Real Crapola!!!!
Bought a new Dell computer last month. Tried to buy a computer locally, but every store I went into either didn't have what they advertised or tried to sell me a huge expensive computer and all sorts of add on stuff. The price would typically start about $1000 but then when I would get to the cash register, it would end up being more than $4000. Same thing happened at three different stores. So I called Dell and ordered what I wanted. BIG PROBLEM. What I ordered is not what arrived. Well, even before that there were problems. They neglected to tell me that someone would have to sign for the delivery and since, like most folks, I work for a living, there isn't anyone at home during the day. So, after about 2 weeks of trying to get my computer delivered, the FED Ex genius simply sits it on the porch of a house half way down the block--no signature, no nothing. I didn't even know these people. The next problem happens when I'm unpacking it. Written in black marker on the inside bottom of the box is the message "this is a piece of crap". Things went further down hill from there. Bottom line is that I put the thing out with the rest of the garbage to be picked up tomorrow. I'm still working with the old computer, which is far better than that Dell junk even though it's ten years old. So, if anyone is considering a new computer, you might want to avoid the rip off artists at Dell.

My dell(s) have never given me a problem before (knock on wood), but I have heard some horror stories from other people I know. Hope you get everything sorted out. 0 -

Negative. We bought a Dell in March '06. No trouble what so ever.0 -
Been pounding on 1 long before I showed up here and have a NIB just like it in the garage for our new house. This 1 will take up residence in my gun room or my shop.Sorry to hear about your trouble with the stores,Fed-ex and graffiti artists 0 -
been a loyal dell user for quite some time and never had so much as a hiccup. any problem i have had has been fixed without delay. mine arrived very quickly exactly as ordered.
everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the vast majority of dell customers disagree with you. to each his own....0 -
I've got two of them and they don't present any problems. 0 -
I had the same problem with Dell's delivery, finally went to the depot and told the manager I wasn't moving my truck from the loading dock until my computer was on loaded. gripeingly she radio'ed the driver who put it in my truck.
Got home, CD drive didn't work. Called customer service, held for 20 minutes, dude couldn;t speak English. I hung up and called back, third time I got someone who I could understand. Finally got it working.
It's fine now but an ordeal. My son bought his at Circuit City, no problems. EVERYBODY spoke English/
I feel your pain.[:(]0 -
I would rather have my balls pounded flat with a wooden mallet than buy another Dell. The product is crap and the customer service is crap. 0 -
5 Dells no problems.
4 laptops and 1 desktop.
Arrived intact and as advertised.
Zero problems with any of them.
They all came from the Dell outlet center too.
I will continue to buy Dell.
I would love to pick up your garbage.
If you can afford to trash a new, under warranty computer then you should have bought locally.

Sorry to hear about your 'dude this is broken' computer.
Luckily I custom built my own a while back and still works fine.
Although my wallet would disagree.0 -
Dell USED to be good stuff. It is CRAP now......and their customer service SUCKS now that it is based in India!
Emachines are a good machine, for not much money. I called tech support last year, got a REAL PERSON in less than 30 seconds....and they spoke english!

eMachines must have changed a lot.
I've had micro-computers since an IMSAI kit in the mid 70s. Maybe 20 total. The only problems I've ever had is trying to unf**k software that I didn't get right.
Most number of one brand I've had has been 5 Compaqs. Only did a mail order box once, and it was OK.
Lots of luck, partner.

Mine is 2 years old and no problems.
My dads is better than 3 years old with no problems.
And I know of plenty of others over the years with no problems.
Like any other product from time to time a bad one will get out but the company should take care of it.0 -
I have 2 Dell desktops here at home and we have HUNDREDS at work. Even buying them in those numbers, a problem is rare indeed. In fact they are much more reliable than the bad old days when we bought IBMs. 0 -
had to replace a drive onmy new dell. shoulda heard all the CSRs I had to talk to to get it done.
They shipped a wrong computer to someone in my office also last week.
You pay a premium for that dell crap.
my next one will probally be from vision0 -
I'm on a fairly high end Dell here............. Totally satisfied!!!!! 0 -
Will never own another Dell !!
I have a laptop that has problems and customer service (in India) has not helped me at all ! They basically told me to throw it away and buy another one.
Never again !
Thanks---Peabo0 -
I am at work, but have 2 HPs and 9 Dells here and I know all the servers and backup equipment is Dell. I work in a 911/dispatch center. These computers are on 24/7. We do have frequent problems with them here. They last no more than 3 years, and that is only because of the extended warranty that is on them. The 2 HP units have been working for 4 years without even being shut down! These are in use 24/7 in a 911 center as part of our radio/paging system.
I am starting to look for a new computer for home, but will not look at a Dell.0 -

What you may want to check is the design level of the Dell "servers" vs the design level of the HP "servers." What I have seen over the years is that whoever specified and purchased the equipment really did not know what they were doing. Dell and HP both sell various levels of "servers" , some are enterprise spec and some are just SOHO (small office home office) spec. If you buy a SOHO spec server to save money, it will not last in a demanding 24 environment. Also, do your HPs run a Windows version or something more robust like Unix or Linux? This too goes to reliability and uptime. We also have HP servers that have been running for years, but they do not run Windows. But our Windows servers must be rebooted once a week to keep them running, and that does not matter what hardware platform they are on.0 -
While it's true that Dell customer service is the worst in the (third) world, I have gotten to speak with someone fluent in English every time I called them. You have to ASK for someone without an accent!
That being said, I have owned Dells for about 13 years now, and the only trouble I had with any was the laptop (inspiron 1150); the hard drive was a Toshiba, and only lasted about 5 months before locking up solid. I bought a Western Digital to replace it, and we've been happy for 3 years.
Just ordered another Dell laptop for $647 to use as my CADD machine; even bought a docking station just in case.
I shopped like crazy for this one, went to Circuit City, CompUSA, even Tiger Direct; only Dell had the extras I needed without charging extra for them.0 -

I'm not sure of the design level of the servers. The units I was refering to running 24/7 are the PC terminals themselves. They are all on Windows, and most of the Dells get shut down daily. I personally do it at the beginngin of my shift every day.0 -
I have a Dell Inspiron 7500. This is a laptop that my girlfriend got for free from her office a few years back. It was bought new in 1999.
I have been using this little computer for over a year. I use it as my desk top computer. It works great, no complaints.0 -
The offices are full of them, no problems here or at home, Dell Rocks! 0 -

In that case, check what model Dells your terminals are. I would hazard a bet they buy really low end ones, just on cost, that are meant to be home computers that are not meant to be used 24/7. There is a huge quality difference between a computer that is meant to be a desktop and one that is meant to be a workstation. I spent 7 months on a TDY at an Air Force base last year redesigning their systems and that is what their buyer had done. When I got there they had 150 brand new Dells that they had just ordered but they had ordered the lowest priced ones they could find, which just happened to have built in copper NICS, but their building was cabled with fiber. Little hard to hook a copper NIC onto Fiber without spending even more money buying converters. And no ones makes a fiber NIC that would fit that low level Dell and that low level Dell would barely even run their software app. So back goes everything, costing them even more money to return them and pay more shipping to get good ones. I have seen it often.0 -
Our production department runs (flawlessly) on Dells.
Zero problems.0 -
Sorry to hear. I bought a dell laptop computer before I started college. I have treated it as an everyday desktop computer ever since then and it still runs very well. Also, when I ordered it I had zero problems with ordering or shipping.

I've been using DELL PCs for 15 years and where I worked we used about 3000 of them. Excellent value for money.
One caveat: You have to be smarter than the box they come in.

Whiteclouder, how's that possible? You said you're using one! 0 -
I'm on my second Dell desktop, gave the 5 year old one to my wife.
Am very satisfied with them.0 -
I did tech suport for Dell for 1.5 years. I'd estimate 90% of the 'problems' were software related, i.e. windows wigging out or badly configured. the genuine hardware problems were usually zapped modems or parts broken by the customer.
malfunctioning electronics were quite rare. so, as far as I can tell, Dell wasn't putting out junk. it's the customer not knowing how to handle a computer or what to do when something simple goes wrong.0
