I've argued with a guy I know about this many times. Especially on assault weapons. I believe EVERY citizen, in EVERY state, and EVERY community is ENTITLED to own ANYTHING they can afford. He thinks there's no need for anything other than hunting rifles. It's very frustrating talking about it with him so we usually don't. It's like I'm trying to describe a foreign language. It's so clear to me, but many, many people do not see it. People do not look at the big picture. They are concerned with what's going on in their house, or their work on a daily basis and that's it. So many people will not think outside of their bubble. The politicians do it for them. Many of which, most normal citizens don't even know who they are!! Much less know or care about their position on gun control.
I told the guy that this country was born from a revolution. He says, "yeah, but things are different now." He's completely comfortable in the fact that our government cares about his welfare and wants, is willing, and capable to protect him at all times. He lives in a rural area and feels safe because nothing's ever happened.
That's it. That's the mindset we fight. I don't know how you can win.
I personally don't believe the government has our best interests in mind any more. They do enough to get elected again and that's about it. Why? Because they target guns as one of our most serious problems while the tobacco and alcohol industry (that they're getting rich off of)are free to kill tens of thousands of American's every year. I believe they don't want people to live long healthy lives because then they become a burden on social security and welfare. They also want us all unarmed and under a microscope as much as possible. This stuff is happening right in front of our faces and nobody sees it.
On TOP of this, it is simply irresponsible to rely on a government agency to protect you. YOU know your home. YOU are there. YOU are the first line of defense. YOU have the advantage.
A cop driving 100 mph (if you're lucky) to get to your house,putting himself and other lives in danger for your sake, while the armed intruder(s) do whatever they please is NOT the ideal scenario. At best you're a hostage. This is what many politicians believe is good enough for you though.
Then the police have to risk their lives, coming into unfamiliar territory, trying not to get themselves killed while also, trying not to accidentally kill you. Police have many duties. "Protecting your family in your home shouldn't have to be their top priority", is probably what I would say.
I could go on and on, especially about concealed carry and lack thereof in this pathetic state but, I'll save it for another day.0 -

I'll tell them this:
Cars kill more people in the world every year than guns do...and YOU own at least one car. Your car spends most of the time on the road, and thus most of it's time as a potential threat to everyone else. My guns spend most of the time locked in a cabinet with no ammo in them, thus most of their time is spent as a non-threat to everyone else.
And when my guns DO get out of the cabinet and DO get ammo in them, they only stay loaded for a few minutes at most before I put holes in a piece of paper or a log that's well away from anyone or anything that may or may not get injured and/or killed by me firing my guns.0 -

Each day, every peaceful, lawful citizen starts their day wanting very much to keep their possessions, physical well-being and especially their lives.
Each day the thousands of murderous, violent criminals in America start their day wanting to find one of those peaceful citizens, that the criminals hope will be an easy target, for the purpose of taking those possessions (robbery) their physical well-being (beatings and rape) and their lives (murder).
Each day, legislators across America and the liberal, left-wing liberals and media start their day by trying to find ways to remove all weapons from society so as to have a more peaceful, crim-free America. Sadly, "society" includes the criminals along with the peaceful, lawful citizens.
Of the two groups, the violent criminals and the peaceful citizens, exactly which one do you know will actually be the one to be disarmed? And which group will continue to illegally use and carry any and all weapons that they desire and continue to victimize innocent, defenseless citizens?
Anybody know? A free car the first member who has the right answer.[:o)]

Another thing I have considered a lot are the similarities between alcohol and firearams. Disclaimer: Keep in mind, I enjoy a good beer but usually drink in moderation. I have nothing against any alcohol. I'm just making a point. I'm willing to accept the fact that people will lose their lives tomorrow and the next day and the day after that for many, unforeseen, unpredictable, reasons. It's out of our hands. Very unfortunately, bad things happen.
Anyway,
Both can be used for recreational purposes.
Both are sometimes viewed as being 'sinful'.
Both can cause harm (drunk drivers).
Both are hated by some groups, while loved, and cherished by other groups as a sole means of recreation.
Both habits can be expensive.
Both can ruin relationships.
Both are used far more for recreation than do any harm.
So why when someone is shot or someone commits their first crime of their lives with a gun, will a politician propose a gun ban, but when 8 people get killed by a repeat drunk driver, it's " just a horrible, unpreventable tragedy" and nobody says anything? If you even hear about it!
Why aren't the victim's family members screaming to have alcohol banned!? The drunk driver "HAD ACCESS" to all the alcohol he could consume and that caused him to drive the wrong way on a one way at night. Why don't the politicians attack this like rabid animals?
MONEY and AVAILABILITY.
All common people (the masses) can walk down town and spend a few bucks on a case of beer. It's cheap and easily available, enjoyed by many. Any 21 year old from the rich to the poor, smartest to the stupidest can buy it and use it.
Guns are typically expensive and usually complicated to obtain, being owned by a smaller group. The words 'complicated' and 'expensive' immediately tells you that many people are not only unwilling, but sometimes unable to comprehend the process or put forth the effort to obtain any. So obviously, many people will not own firearms.
What does this mean? Well, if someone proposed an alcohol ban again, which has already failed, then and only then would the masses be screaming and the politician(s) would have NO chance of gaining office. They aren't going to risk their careers outraging the masses. Even though it 'supposedly' would be the 'right' thing to do, given today's atmosphere and thinking style.
So, even though thousands more are killed by alcohol every year, we are willing to accept that as acceptable losses and they sweep it under the rug. Shocking really. Nobody seems to care.
On the other hand, it's easier to ignore the recreational use of firearms and attack the minority of gun owners who are actually paying attention and own upper end stuff that normal gun owners will not own or care about. They have a smaller voice and they say it just makes sense to impose more restrictions. Pretty sad stuff.
So if they aren't worried about the particular numbers concerning loss of life, then what really is the objective? Most politicians are well educated and very intelligent while the average citizen tends not to be. People better start opening their eyes instead of asking stupid questions concerning the ability to provide themselves with their own security.
This is why no anti-gun politician will get my vote. I don't care what they're willing to 'give' me or what party they're from. Don't even give it a second thought. They are either for or against in my book. Gun owners have given up far too many rights already. I'm unwilling to give another millimeter and I really haven't been around all that long. I'm tired of it.0 -

"Then you don't have to." Followed by reasons I choose to be a gunowner. Depends on the level of freedom hating commie I'm talking to.0 -
Its all about choice. My government says i can own them, so i do. Whether theres reason or not. Our government says you can own them,(unless you involved in a crime and they now say you cant- your fault) that is your choice. It is my choice to own them, same as it is to you. Whether i use them for good or bad intentions is purely my choice and yours also. But if you are stupid enough to abuse the right of owning or using a gun then well, you pay the price. Example: Joe Blow breaks into my house when me or family is home, whether Joe Blow has a gun, knife, baseball bat or anything that can be used as a weapon is irrelavent, Joe Blow is now dead, and hopefully me and the family are safe and uninjured. Joe Blow chose to do what he did, hence Joe Blow paid the price. I'll live with the consequences if there is any knowing the family may be safe. Occasional hunts are a piece of mind away from everyday life, not to mention putting meat in the freezer. Guns are also a hobby- collecting, trading, plinking, cleaning, reconditioning, heirlooms. And i for one dont rely on police getting there in time( no offense to the law men or women but no you cant be everywhere at the snap of the finger like some people see it), yes you are the first line of defense in your home. Better to have a little insurance, than none at all. By the way do you have real insurance on you home to help incase of fire or bad weather? Well insurance in one form is the same in another. People that are convicted of a crime for killing someone, should in my opinion be put to death in the simplest way possible and in the quickest way possible- NO CEPTIONS OR PLEAS. An EYE FOR AN EYE. Maybe then killing crimes would decline, people would think twice before doing it. Instead of " I'll kill that person, go to prison for abit(which provides me with shelter and a meal) like 5-10 years, i'll get out and live off the government and taxpayer for the rest of my life. It is a bull***t system in my opinion. 0 -

Now, here is a feller that indeed has completely 'missed the point' of the entire discussion...PLUS the meaning of the Second Amendment. Not to be rough on him...after all, this is the official NRA line for many years...so the confusion is understandibly widespread.
Brain-washing is such an insideous thing...mostly we don't even realize we are the victim of it.
The very IDEA..that the Second Amendment dealt with keeping ravenous government in CHECK...brooks NO "Our Government Says You Can Own Them"..NONE AT ALL...THAT IS A TOTAL rejection of sanity..a decent into madness, if you will...allowing goverment to restrict that which holds it in check....MADNESS.

I mearly gave my opinion and yes governmentcan say you can or cant own them. I believe the constitution was written by the people in government, in a time when things where different. They can amend the constitution at anytime. So yes in reality the government says you can or cant own one. Where i agree or not. 0 -
You do have to call a government office-fbi- for a background check to purchase or even take a gun out of pawn correct? Hence the answer will be on the call proceed or not to proceed. 0 -

For one i am not a commy. Two i do know my history. Three you saying i can go anywhere in the U.S. and purchase a gun (any gun since it is my right) without having to get approved by a government office, correct? No i dont think slavery is abolished, it still exists in some form. OH by the way i do own several guns. I didnt put anyone down therefore i shouldnt be gettn put down either. Answer to owning one was it's my right/choice. 0 -
I ask them when the bad guy shows up to do you harm, and if you are able, you call the police for help right? What does the bad guy do to you in those 8 to 28 minutes it takes the cops to get to where you are at to save you? If it only takes the cops even 2 minutes to respond, that gives the bad guy enough time to stab you at least 80 times. I then may add, after your phone call at least the cops will know where to find your body. 0
